Abstract

In the current massive digital development, we have to face the fact that our students are more engaged with their smartphones rather than books. However, some schools have no facilities to provide digital reading sources and they also lack of book collections. This study aims to develop a library application to provide students with various reading resources and enrich library’s book collections. This study employed RnD method which is Analyze, Design, and Develop. It involves 12 schools and 40 junior high school students and uses a questionnaire to analyze the needs. For the design and development phase, it uses an online platform called Kodular to create the digital library. The result of this study is the product of an Android application called Digilib Komulit that can unite and access various reading source websites through one application and can be used in schools’ library as multimedia collection.

Abstract

The occurrence of Javanese-Indonesian-English code-switching among people in cities is common since the cities are the melting pot of heterogeneous people from different linguistic backgrounds. However, it is alarming when code-switching is performed by middle-class society in rural areas in their daily communication. The fact indicates that rural dwellers are relatively homogenous communities. Given the aforementioned context related to code-switching, this study, therefore, aims to reveal its types, to seek its factors, and to get informants’ understanding of the English terms used. This study used a qualitative method by applying interviews and a simple test to get the data. The finding showed that there are three types of code-switching they are inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and extra-sentential but the intra-sentential one was mostly used by the villagers. Regarding to factors triggering the occurrences of code-switching, the rural dwellers reported that their action was influenced by the interluctor, topic, setting, and function when the conversation took place. Even though the villagers used some English terms in daily communication, they confessed that they are still lack of English understanding. The use of English terms was for a practical purpose as the terms were ready to use instead of looking for their Indonesian equivalent. In addition, the English expressions were easily understood by the involved parties in a communication. When this phenomenon goes on and on and is passed to successor generations, it is not impossible that the English language emerges to be the threat of ethnic language in the rural area.

Abstract

A play in meanings can be found within an internal interaction of a secretive and concealed community. In Surabaya, queer individuals, particularly gay men, employ secret codes within their language as a defensive measure against conservative societal norms. The primary strategy of this coded language involves the selection of specific vocabulary and the nuanced meanings embedded within it. Many MSMs (men who have sex with men) utilize these vocabularies for communication, primarily through online dating apps. This study aims to uncover the registers within the gay community and explore how their meanings correspond with their literal meanings in the English language. The research employs a case study method of qualitative approach and applies Leech’s seven types of meaning theory (1981) for analysis. The findings reveal that gay registers convey connotative, reflected, social, and collocative meanings. Connotative meaning is the most commonly used, followed by reflected, collocative, and social meaning. Connotative meanings are frequently employed because the gay community assigns codes to various concepts based on their real-world references. The study sheds light on how queer communities, particularly MSMs in Surabaya, use coded language as a tool for navigating conservative societal pressures. This highlights the adaptability of marginalized groups in protecting their identities, emphasizing the importance of language as valid form of expression and resistance. Future research could expand to other regions with similar or differing cultural contexts, allowing for comparative analysis of coded language usage among MSMs in various conservative environments and providing a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.

Abstract

Digital literacy practices are a current issue and exciting topic, mainly for two reasons: many activities are integrated with digital technology, and one of them is English language teaching, which requires technological innovation to improve English language achievement. This study describes how English language teachers can develop and implement digital literacy practices in English classes. Qualitative research is the methodology utilised in this study, employing online interviews and questionnaires as the research tools. The study results show that many participants want to implement digital literacy practices in English classes. They must make digitally comprehensive preparations, practical implementation, and comprehensive assessments. There are some steps to implement digital literacy practices in English language teaching: adoption, adaptation, application, CALL, and MALL. So, English language teachers should follow five steps to implement digital literacy practices in English classes. The five steps are in line with preparation, implementation, and assessment. Digital literacy practices encourage English language teachers to improve and integrate their English language knowledge, skills, and character day by day. Digital literacy practices help English language teachers develop comprehensive preparation, efficient implementation, and comprehensive assessment more efficiently.

Abstract

Reading English text is often regarded as a difficult task by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students during their individual reading time. Therefore, this research investigates the impact of a small group discussion on ESP students' online text reading performance and strategies. The quantitative research, employing a pre-experimental design, purposively recruited 90 students from the Computer Science and Engineering Faculty. The data were collected through pre- and post-assessments on reading comprehension and a survey on reading strategies. Analyzed using SPSS 27.0, the data of the research show that the small group discussion highly affects reading performance of ESP students. Besides, their reported reading strategy use demonstrates a high frequency of use in all three strategy categories (PROB, GLOB, SUP), with no significant difference found in all categories by age and major. In conclusion, the implementation of a small group discussion in the ESP classroom can effectively improve the online text reading performance and develop reading strategies of the students. It also positively implies that educators can employ a small group discussion to promote other reading aspects in various educational settings.

Abstract

Grammatical subjects are critical as they warrant text coherence and assist in reader’s understanding of the text. They are of particular importance in a research article introduction to set up the study’s context and relevance within the wider academic discourse. This research aims to disclose what novice writers can learn from professional writers in using Grammatical Subjects (GS). It compared GS realizations and functions in Research Article Introductions (RAIs) employed by both professional and novice writers published in applied linguistic-related Journals. One hundred introduction sections from ten journals were purposely selected. 50 of them were authored by professional writers while the other 50 by novice writers. All of these sections were then examined with the use of Gosden's (1993) analytical framework. Findings revealed that both professional and novice writers employed all types of grammatical subjects. These types encompassed discourse participant, interactive participant, discourse event or process, macro and micro discourse entities, hypothesized viewpoint, and empty real-world theme. Nevertheless, the results also highlighted noticeable differences concerning the realizations of participant viewpoint, interactive discourse entity, empty discourse theme, objective viewpoint, hypothesized entity, empty H and O themes, mental process, real-world entity, and real-world event or process. These findings could help novice writers, especially non-native novice writers, navigate the use of grammatical subjects and become aware of their functions and linguistic features to establish coherent ideas in writing a research article introduction section.

Abstract

The fact that teaching English in Indonesia is still driven by textbooks makes not many students have the ability to communicate in English and even they often experience mispronunciation. This study was conducted to find out how to teach allomorphs as a provision to strengthen knowledge of English pronunciation. In addition, this study also seeks to reveal how the challenges faced by EFL teachers in the Allomorph learning process. There are 3 stages that the teacher can do to teach allomorphs through narrative texts; introduction to phonetic symbols, reading the text, and analyzing and practicing the types of allomorphs. From the use of the selected narrative text, it reveals 3 types of allomorphs from 4 types that have been introduced to students in the form of past tense, plural number, and regular possessive. Some of the challenges and problems faced by EFL teachers in teaching English pronunciation, especially allomorphs, is the lack of student motivation to learn. In addition, EFL teachers still hold on to the old philosophy about the lack of importance of learning pronunciation, making this teaching even more difficult. The lack of class hours and the large number of students in EFL classes are also challenges for teachers.

Abstract

This present study aimed at describing the students’ perception towards Madurese traditional culinary based teaching materials of English in higher education level in Sumenep Madura. This is a survey research which is triangulated with three instruments used in collecting data namely: observation field notes, questionnaire, and interview. The result showed that the English learning material which was equipped with Madurese traditional culinary got a positive perception and higher appreciation from the students in terms of materials’ attraction, materials’ usefulness, materials’ difficulty, materials’ variety, materials’ authenticity, and proportion of the four language skills. Further, the students can happily and enthusiastically join the English language learning. They said that they could recognize the madurese culinary deeper than before. In addition, traditional culinary can be used as the identity that can promote the region to overseas. Moreover, in terms of English language teaching, the traditional culinary can be used as valuable materials which can help to promote and maintain local wisdom.

Abstract

Speaking skill becomes a very important issue in second language acquisition. Among the four English skills being developed, speaking is crucial for students. Speaking anxiety is one of the burdens experienced by the students so that the exploration of the willingness to communicate is needed to maintain the problem. Moreover, in the Indonesian context, English is still a second/ foreign language so that when the student is required to speak in public using English the problem will be double. This research discussed the implementation of Sidang Akademi (Academic Preliminary Meeting) in a private Senior High School in Central Java as an obligatory activity for the students. This research employs a qualitative study specifically a case study. The result of the study presents that the implementation of the activity causes the student to experience speaking anxiety caused by many factors. There are also some ways in managing speaking performance conducted by the student in the implementation of the activity.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Internal Quality Assurance System (SPMI) in enhancing the competitiveness of Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTI) in the era of globalization. The purpose of the research is to understand how SPMI can improve the quality of education, research, and graduates in PTI. The method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, through case studies of several PTIs that have implemented SPMI. The results show that the application of SPMI significantly contributes to improving academic quality and the competitiveness of PTIs. Strategies for strengthening SPMI that involve enhancing internal capacity, academic innovation, and international collaboration are key to success. This research recommends that PTIs strengthen their commitment to SPMI through targeted policies and conduct ongoing evaluations to maintain educational quality. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of SPMI in building the global competitiveness of PTIs, as well as in creating graduates who are prepared to face the challenges of the job market.
