Abstract

ABSTRACT Dialogic education refers to the interaction occurred in a group work dialogue between teacher and students. It is not limited to written and verbal discourse; it also encompasses the broader notion that the interaction of diverse ideas can result in mutual insights. The concept of dialogic education involves how teachers elicit students' 'common sense' perspectives through classroom dialogue, interact with their emerging ideas, and assist students in overcoming misunderstandings during the learning process. By analyzing and creating dialogic interactions principals in the classroom, dialogic education not only stimulates broader and more comprehensive thinking and learning among students, but it also transforms classroom relationships, realigning the conventional power structure between teachers and students. This paper reviews the importance of the dialogic education by giving discussion on the models of the dialogic education, the approaches to study the dialogic education, and its implementation across countries. This paper also concludes the review by adding some future research direction according to the novelty and gaps from the earlier literature. Keywords: conversation analysis, corpus linguistics, dialogic education, sociocultural discourse analysis, thematic content analysis

Abstract

The importance of language in expressing ideas and ideologies has always been a focus of public debate in politics. The persons in charge of the reins of power become a source of concern, as well as the language they use. As a result, this research looks into the speech acts, language styles, and how they express peace values from Biden’s victory speech. A qualitative research design was used. Biden’s pragma stylistics and peace values were extracted from his victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware on November 7, 2020. This study focused on three aspects, namely: categories of illocutionary acts, language style based on sentence structure, and peace values. The data were analyzed following these stages: data condensation, data display, and drawing/verifying conclusions. The results showed that the most common illocutionary type employed in diverse language styles in Biden’s victory speech was commissive. Presumably, politicians have become accustomed to making promises or making commitments in order to entice citizens to vote for them. In addition, two types of peace values (inner peace and social peace) were discovered along with three types of language styles: parallelism, antithesis, and repetition (epizeuxis, anaphora, and anadiplosis), with more than half of the data employing parallelism as the language style. The majority of Biden’s speech focused on social peace to keep social life free of internal strife.

Abstract

Only little research has explored how information from alternative assessments especially portfolios might be best utilized in developing second language acquisition processes of a single individual student’s comprehension of simple present tense as one of grammar aspects. To understand these ideas more complete, a greater initial has to be set on a study. In addition, there must be a more prominent center on how teachers can implement alternative assessment especially portfolio assessment and how the information from these assessments can be utilized to inform and direct the learning process. Using mix method design, this study examined the language processing of two students (i.e., a high-ability learner and a low-ability learner) studying at grade seventh at MTsN 4 surabaya. According to the findings, There was difference in the degree to which the high ability student accurately noticed the answers of the questions (the use of s/es in simple present tense), rather than the low ability student. Both low ability and high ability learners could recognize the learning gaps before and after the learning process, and they notice their development system towards the target language. However, the high ability student performed better.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to enquire about the English foreign language (EFL) doctoral students’ perspective, especially in the non-English department, concerning the Indonesian government policy, which obliges an article published in a reputable international journal as a requirement to receive a doctoral degree. Their challenges in publishing their papers in Scopus or Web of Science (WOS)-indexed journals and their resolutions were also analyzed. A mixed-methods technique was used to obtain quantitative and qualitative information. The study consisted of 57 respondents, comprising 25 males and 32 females, who were EFL doctoral students of education departments from five universities. The purposive sampling method with several criteria was used to determine the study participants. Data were then collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Subsequently, the findings showed that the policy of publishing a paper in Scopus or WOS-indexed journals to obtain an EFL doctoral degree was burdensome to the majority of the students. Other findings showed that the students faced several challenges in publishing their papers in these journals, including language problems, cost of publication, journal selection, lack of experience, duration to publish, writing difficulties, revising, and stress. The actions to resolve these challenges were also provided in this study.
