Abstract

This research explored how EFL students perceived the implementation of self-directed learning through their process of composing travel writing. With the enhancement of the independent learning model, it had become an interesting investigation of students’ engagement in their creativity. Promoting self-directed learning through the students’ travel writing becomes one of the ultimate strategies that is potentially integrated into nowadays conditions since it addresses students to foster their learning style. This research was designed as a descriptive statistics method using self-directed learning analysis by Knowles (1975) and Garrison (1997) which was employed as the theoretical framework. A total of 17 EFL University Students who joined in creative writing class volunteered for this research to have a deep interview with comprehensive related questions through a questionnaire. Based on the creative writing class they chose; the respondents were chosen at random. The optional creative writing class, which is offered for two semesters, attracts students who are interested in improving their writing. They take several courses in the class that are focused on producing various kinds of creative writing products. The results of the study show: (i) the integration of self-directed learning in students’ travel writing encourages the improvement of student writing, (ii) there is a fostering of their cultural awareness, and (iii) a building of  their autonomous learning that covers three fundamental elements of self-directed learning, including self-management, self-monitoring, and motivation. Finally, promoting self-directed learning in students’ travel writing is incorporated properly to enhance the students learning model in an effective way for nowadays learning needs.

Abstract

Proverb is categorized as the simplest form of myriad types of folklore. It is used to express the truth based on the traditional saying, which has some implicit meanings. One of the interesting proverbs to be investigated is the Madurese proverb connecting with some crucial life principles. The present study is aimed to reveal the implicit meaning of Madurese proverbs, which have a special meaning on foregrounding values. The study has designed a qualitative method and used the theory of conversational implicature, pioneered by Grice (1989). The analysis and the pragmatics approach are elaborated since the data were gained using the extracted method. The findings show that Madurese proverbs can be categorized as two common types of implicature: generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. The results also reveal that those chosen proverbs represented three main Madurese social principles: (i) courage (ii) upholding the honor of moral values, and (iii) upholding self-dignity.

Abstract

The popularity of video games among language learners makes games a potential medium for learning languages. Previous research shows that playing video games, one of which is DOTA 2, can have a positive effect on students' vocabulary acquisition, but it still does not explain what specific vocabulary learning strategies are used. This study explores DOTA 2 players' experiences in acquiring new knowledge and identifies effective strategies for acquiring knowledge in the context of the game. The research method used is a case study research design, as well as semi-structured interviews and observation. The results showed that DOTA 2 players learned new vocabulary through exposure while playing the game, and social interaction was the most emphasized comprehension learning strategy used by the participants. This study provides insight into the effectiveness of DOTA 2 as a language learning tool, especially regarding knowledge acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how the students' university accommodates their local/regional language to the new language that they stay temporary for their study program at university. Two students were involved in this study from different regions in East Java which took four years of study in UNESA. They have different dialects from their regions and should adjust new dialects in Surabaya for their new environment. For this reason, this study wanted to know how students-university accommodates their home-language to Surabaya language as the place that they study at university. To do so, the researcher gained the data in depth-interviews that used structured interviewed techniques. Further, the analysis revealed that the university students changed their linguistic features because many reasons; they wanted to be approved in their community, they wanted to create meaningful or communicative communication with interlocutors, and they would get the same perceptions with their interlocutor. This research is beneficial for researchers who interest in the area of speech accommodation, especially in the Indonesian context since it is rarely conducted in Indonesia. Moreover, from the results of this study, it is to be more useful when the future study involved more students from different regions and different regional languages that can show many varieties of evidence for the speech accommodation process in a multilingual society.

Abstract

Speech errors can occur due to language activation and competition in the human brain as a symptom of language friction. Many researchers have studied the language friction and published their findings, indicating that the study about this issue is interesting to conduct. The current literature study aims to review previous research on language friction in terms of methods and linguistics theories applied in those studies. A systematic method was used in this research to select research articles on the language friction, and resulted in 17 articles to be reviewed. Those articles are published in Scopus indexed journals. It is found that in the last seven years, studies on language friction have shown an increasing trend, indicating that this issue is still relevant to study. In addition, most of them indicate that language friction has been analyzed based on psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics theories. However, it is not enough to study language friction from psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives, but also needs to be studied from ethnosociolinguistic perspective. This literature study can help educators and English language learners to choose learning methods by considering the language friction experienced by learners. Furthermore, by understanding the language friction, speech participants can overcome misunderstandings in communication.

Abstract

Translanguaging has become a significant concept in multilingual education, particularly in pesantren-based schools where students frequently use multiple languages, including Indonesian, English, Arabic and local languages. This study aims to explore how translanguaging is practiced by students in English Club activities and its effectiveness as a tool for enhancing communication. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and audio recordings of students engaged in English Club activities at pesantren-based school. The findings reveal that translanguaging is a flexible and dynamic practice, enabling students to naturally mix languages to comprehend complex ideas, express emotions and build confidence. It also fosters active participation, creativity, and collaboration, helping students effectively navigate academic and personal discussions. This study draws on Vogel and Garcia’s (2017) theory, which emphasizes the use of students’ full linguistic repertoire, and Cenoz and Gorter’s (2017) distinctions between planned and spontaneous translanguaging. The results confirm these theories and extend their application to the pesantren context, illustrating how translanguaging enhances communication, supports collaborative learning, and promotes cultural understanding. Practical recommendations are provided for educators to integrate translanguaging into teaching strategies, creating an effective learning environment for multilingual students.

Abstract

Assessment activities are closely related to the process of learning activities that cannot be separated. There are three processes in teaching and learning activities. That is input, process and output. Peer assessment has an important role in an English learning process, especially in the realm of speaking. Input is the student himself, the process is related to the curriculum, teaching materials, and teaching methods. And output is the result of learning. Assessment is available in all three domains. Assessment is carried out before the learning process, when learning is carried out, and after learning is carried out. Because of the importance of assessment factors in learning, there are many forms of assessment during learning. One form of assessment that supports the process of learning English in the realm of speaking is peer assessment activities. Some researchers believe that peer assessment plays an active and beneficial role for both students and teachers themselves. This qualitative research aims to determine and evaluate the benefits of peer assessment and perceptions of four subject teachers in an upper secondary school as teaching material from the results of assessments conducted by their students. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews containing opinions, challenges and benefits from the application they obtained from this oral peer feedback assessment method

Abstract

The current global pandemic triggers English teachers to be innovative and competent in delivering teaching instructions in online classrooms. Even though Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is widely used to support online language teaching and learning, nonetheless, the integration of Mobile-Assisted Language Assessment (MALA) in speaking skills has not been immensely examined. Thus, this current study aimed to scrutinize Indonesian EFL learners’ perceptions of the use of WhatsApp as a tool for peer assessment in an online speaking class, as well as its potential benefits and drawbacks. This qualitative study employed a semi-structured interview to gain the data which were then analyzed by using phenomenological analysis. Fourteen secondary learners participated in two sessions of an online class by assessing their peers’ oral performances via the WhatsApp application. In the end, they were interviewed regarding their views on the method employed to assess their oral skills. The results indicated the participants’ positive perceptions towards the method along with various benefits and drawbacks they encountered during the process which were divided into technical and academic aspects. The results suggested that WhatsApp as a tool for mobile-assisted language assessment was not supposed to be perceived as a single major assessment for speaking skills, rather as an alternative to complement traditional assessments.
