Abstract

Facing the advancement of the technology era, there is increasing awareness about integrating intercultural communicative competence in the English language teaching process. Because many people from diverse cultural backgrounds talk in English, students should acquire that competence to compete globally. To produce appropriate conversation, Grice proposes four maxims that should be obeyed, called cooperative principles. However, because of a cross-cultural situation, someone can flout the maxim as part of communication. Therefore, the present study discusses the type and the reason for flouting maxims done by the characters in a movie which is a good learning medium to teach in a classroom. Furthermore, this study wanted to explore the cause of why the movie could be an opportunity for the teacher to increase students’ intercultural literacy through the English teaching and learning process. The data gathered from the movie script and the character’s behavior in a cross-cultural situation will be analyzed through content and thematic analysis. The result showed the figures of the movie flouted the maxim of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. Humor intention, conviviality, enmity, elaborate explanation, prestige, mocking, and stating opinion were found in the movie as the characters’ motivation why they flout the maxim. The movie had an opportunity to improve students’ intercultural literacy by studying the characters’ communication and behavior. It contained understanding, competence, attitude, participation, and language that could equip students in improving their intercultural literacy. Keywords: Flouting maxim, Intercultural literacy, Movie Study

Abstract

Critical Thinking (Hereafter, CT) significantly correlates to the EFL students' speaking ability; students with high critical thinking perform better than students with low critical thinking. Several strategies can be implemented for initiating CT in the classroom. One of them is using language style conveyed by the teachers. However, few studies concern about this pragma-stylistic usage in the teaching-learning process. Therefore, this current study aims to analyze (1) types of pragma-stylistics strategies used by teachers in initiating the EFL university students' CT in oral mode; (2) the ways teachers use pragma-stylistics strategies in initiating the EFL university students' CT in oral mode; and (3) the teachers' perception of the students' response towards initiating the CT in oral mode. Qualitative descriptive using Interview was conducted to collect the data. The result showed that teachers prefer using Assertive-Stating, Assertive-Suggesting, Directive-Advising and Prolepsis strategies to initiate students' CT in their speaking classroom. They implement those strategies through some activities during the class, such as giving stimulus (text, audio, and video) in a particular theme, conducting group discussions or speaking club, providing instructions or questions, and giving feedback. Besides, the teachers pointed out that most students positively respond to the strategies that they have utilized. The strategies effectively motivate and encourage the students to enhance their CT. Furthermore, this study suggests language teachers initiate their students' CT through the pragma-stylistic strategies mentioned. Finally, further researchers are expected to discuss the same field in more comprehensive scopes with different language skills.

Abstract

Adolescent learners often face significant challenges when developing writing skills in a second language, as they must navigate both linguistic complexity and cognitive demands. This study examines how secondary school students in Indonesia engage in self-regulated learning within English writing tasks, focusing on their use of planning, self-assessment, and response to teacher feedback. Using a qualitative approach, the research involved journal reflections, interviews, and analysis of students’ written work. The findings reveal that while students are beginning to demonstrate self-regulatory behaviors such as setting goals, monitoring their progress, and revising based on feedback their ability to do so independently remains limited. Most learners benefited substantially from scaffolding and teacher support, especially in language accuracy and idea development. Feedback was a powerful catalyst for revision, helping students become more aware of their writing choices and areas for improvement. However, gaps in metacognitive skills and feedback literacy were evident, highlighting the need for more explicit instruction in self-assessment and reflective practice. This study advances our understanding of how self-regulation unfolds in teenage writers and emphasizes the importance of integrating structured reflective tools and responsive feedback into writing pedagogy. By fostering these practices, educators can support the growth of autonomous, engaged learners capable of managing their own learning and improving their writing performance over time.

Abstract

This paper examines how an Indonesian live-streamer and his audiences create a hybrid communal identity by using vulgar language and code-mixing with reference to the popular YouTube livestream @deandeankt. With the digital medium transforming the world into a global village, the streaming culture in Indonesia provides a distinct perspective into how localized linguistic practices interact with global trends in the internet. The interpretivist-constructivist paradigm applied in the current case study research was aimed at understanding the way language and interaction produced hybrid identities. It gathered linguistic and paralinguistic data of @deadndeakt’s livestream for 90 minutes with netnography and thematic analyses. According to the study, abusive swearing (e.g., "kontol [dick]", "goblok [stupid]") represents 89.3 percent of the vulgar language and serves as playful insults, which enhance group cohesion. Emphatic swearing ("Anjing! Gua kalah! [Bitch! I lost!]") and cathartic swearing (“Ngentot, mic-nya rusak! [Fuck, the microphone is broken!]”) increase the emotional involvement. Intra-sentential blends, especially code-mixing (“Brightness-nya kita bikin tiga kali [We increase the brightness threefold]”), prevails in 85 percent. Other examples combine English gaming slang (template, unarchive) with Indonesian structure and local dialects, like a Javanese swear word (“Cok [Damn]”). Pronunciations, such as BTW [read in Indonesian: be te we] are even more localized global terms. It is analyzed that the vulgar language usage assists in persona creation and building of relationships with the audience, creating a tight-knit, exclusive community in which such language represents belonging and emotional release, despite its offensiveness in the larger society. Moreover, streamers combine Indonesian and English with gaming jargon to successfully appeal to their bilingual audience, so that they could be technically accurate and still fit into the global gaming cultures. These activities form a hybrid identity, where speakers possess a strong sense of Indonesian culture but are consistent with international trends, which strengthens group exclusivity. The results draw attention to live-streaming as a contact zone in which language negotiates belonging, which disrupts strict cultural boundaries. The study highlights the sociolinguistic innovativeness of online communities and recommends future research on offline effects of these online linguistic norms and the effects of the hybrid identities and communicative practices used in live-streaming communities on daily language, social interaction, and identity formation in the real world. The authors also suggest cross-cultural comparative research to find out whether the phenomena are specific to the Indonesian situation or have they become a global trend.

Abstract

In today’s multilingual world, English is broadly used not only in standardized forms of British or American English but also diverse localized varieties around the world. This condition requires the non-native English speaker to be aware of the World Englishes. However, teachers’ knowledge and attitudes play a key role in the effective integration of WE in classrooms. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design to explore the English teachers’ knowledge of WE and its implications for future teaching practices. Data were collected from a close and open-ended questionnaire distributed to 73 teachers across secondary and Islamic education institutions. Descriptive statistics were used in analyzing data about the teachers’ awareness of WE, teaching preferences, and perceived challenges. The results show that 76.6 percent of participants had prior knowledge of WE, while 89.6% supported its inclusion in classroom instruction. 43 percent preferred British English, 30 percent American English and 26 percent expressed flexible or mixed approaches. Teachers highlighted the importance of WE to global perspective, communication skills, and respect for linguistic diversity as potential benefits. However, challenges such as limited exposure and lack of institutional support were noted. Viewed through World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) theory, these findings underscore the pedagogical need to move beyond native-speaker norms toward more inclusive and context-sensitive ELT practices in Indonesia.
