Abstract

This study aims to determine the perceived usefulness and ease of use of ChatGPT among English majors. The study used a qualitative case study research design to gain an idea of the experiences and perceptions of major English students at a university in East Java, Indonesia. Participants in this study are six undergraduates from the major in English at an Indonesian university. Data collection is conducted using open-ended questionnaires and interviews with selected undergraduates. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework is used as an analysis lens to identify trends and interpretations of students' attitudes of ChatGPT for academic writing. The results of this study indicate that students majoring in English have mixed attitudes to ChatGPT, some students find it useful and others prefer alternative tools for their academic writing assignments. Finally, this study emphasizes the importance of understanding individual preferences and needs when considering the integration of AI tools into academic environments.

Abstract

This research examines how self-regulated learning strategies influence stress levels, motivation, and time management among working graduate students, specifically regarding their writing abilities. The investigation addresses ongoing debates about whether employment helps or hinders academic success for graduate students. A qualitative approach was employed using open-ended questionnaires distributed to English Education graduate students working full-time or part-time. This method enabled efficient data collection within a limited timeframe while maintaining depth of insight. The smaller sample size typical of qualitative research allowed for detailed analysis of participant experiences and strategies. With the majority of graduate students now balancing employment alongside their studies, understanding effective learning strategies becomes increasingly crucial. Previous research presents conflicting findings: some studies suggest that working negatively impacts academic performance, while others demonstrate that employed students can maintain high achievement levels through strategic approaches to learning. Results support that employed graduate students can excel academically when implementing effective self-regulated learning techniques. Participants demonstrated exceptional writing performance, evidenced by their published scholarly articles. These outcomes suggest that strategic time management, motivation maintenance, and stress reduction techniques enable working students to produce high-quality academic work. The findings challenge assumptions about employment as a barrier to academic excellence. Instead, they highlight how purposeful learning strategies can help graduate students successfully navigate the dual demands of work and academic responsibilities, particularly in writing-intensive disciplines. This research contributes valuable insights for supporting the growing population of employed graduate students.

Abstract

The present study examines students foreign language enjoyment and anxiety when reminiscing about the mind-mapping app in the English writing class. This research uses sequential explanatory mixed method to cover quantitative and qualitative elements of students emotions in foreign language writing. Foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) questionnaires were distributed to 122 students at two universities in Indonesia, followed by interviewing some representative students. The findings revealed that students enjoyed the use of the mind-mapping app because they thought that they were free to design their own version of mind-mapping with interesting shapes and colours. However, indications of worrying about the mind mapping they made came from fear of being embarrassed in front of their friends. Additionally, the essence of competition also drove the students to be worried in the writing class. It made them feel that other friends had better mind maps. Second, even though having a group discussion in the writing class was interesting for the students, the fear of friends stealing ideas was detected. There was also an indication that the students were concerned about their achievement in writing class. It implies that teachers need to reminisce students ideas and not give negative comments in front of the class to avoid increasing students anxiety, but build up enjoyment instead to boost their devotion to the writing class.

Abstract

In academic writing, particularly in research article abstracts, rhetorical moves and linguistic features are pivotal for effectively communicating findings to a broad audience. This study explores the rhetorical moves employed by Indonesian novice writers in their research article abstracts and their linguistic realization. Using a descriptive qualitative design, we analyzed 25 English Language Teaching (ELT) abstracts written by Indonesian novice writers, employing a checklist instrument for data collection. The results indicate that purpose and product moves are obligatory, method and conclusion moves are conventional, and introduction moves are optional. Rhetorical patterns predominantly follow a linear structure, with embedded and less frequent moves occurring less often. Linguistically, active voice prevails across all moves, surpassing passive voice usage. Present tense is the most common, followed by past, perfect, and future tenses. Key interactional metadiscourse devices, including hedges, boosters, and attitude markers, are evident, while engagement markers and self-mentions are notably absent. This study underscores variations in rhetorical structures and linguistic features among Indonesian novice writers, offering insights to enhance their academic writing practices.

The data were analyzed using statistical techniques with the SPSS program, qualitative analysis, and pattern analysis to formulate conclusions and formulate recommendations. The results of this study show; (1) it is necessary to increase the understanding of the Permenpan RB which regulates the functional positions; (2) most of them require training in the preparation of research proposals, writing scientific papers for translation and adaptation of books, in order to fulfill the components of professional development credit properly; (3) most have not had the opportunity to participate in research from the institution. There is great hope for them, the institution has a policy in research management; (4) some of them have assignments that are not in accordance with their functional positions, so this makes it difficult for them to fulfill professional development credit scores.

Abstract

This research attempts to investigate the efficacy of using literary works as learning media in improving students' reading ability. This mixed-methods study involved grade IX students in a public junior high school in Gresik. Data were acquired by surveys for quantitative data utilizing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews for qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics whilst the qualitative data from interviews were thematically analyzed to investigate students' perspectives and experiences. Three categories were identified from the survey data: students' interest in reading, their interest in English, and their perceptions on the usage of literary works to enhance reading abilities. According to the findings, 47% of students "agree" that reading literature can help them become better readers. This study suggests that teachers can utilize literature in reading skills according to the level of age appropriateness and alignment with learning objectives

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has made an earth-shattering innovation take the world by storm: Artificial Intelligence (AI). This study aims to determine the perceptions and practices of teachers and students in using AI in the classroom. Four university teachers and 30 students were sent questionnaires, and four teachers and 23 students were given online structured interviews.  The results stated that in the student group, as many as 24 respondents (80%) had a good perception of AI, and six respondents (20%) had an excellent perception of AI. Meanwhile, in the teacher group, three respondents (75.0%) had a favorable perception, and one teacher respondent (25.0%) had a very favorable perception of AI. This result is also reinforced by the practice of students' and teachers' perspectives of AI, which state that AI is beneficial in eliciting students’ responses, attracting students’ attention, and increasing their motivation and creativity. Nevertheless, AI is just an intelligent tool; no matter how excellent and optimal the tool is, how much potential humans can utilize depends on the use and the user himself.
