Abstract

This study investigates the learning barriers experienced by eleventh-grade high school students in solving mathematics problems related to numeracy literacy, with particular attention to their levels of mathematics anxiety. Numeracy literacy is essential for students to apply mathematical concepts in real-life contexts; however, many struggle due to cognitive and emotional challenges. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of student work. Participants were selected purposively from a public high school, ensuring variation in performance and reported anxiety levels. The findings reveal that students commonly face difficulties in understanding foundational mathematical concepts, such as fractions, algebraic operations, and data interpretation from tables or graphs. Many also demonstrate limited ability to connect mathematical problems with real-world applications, such as calculating percentages in discounts or interpreting statistical information. Moreover, students struggle to identify relevant information and apply appropriate problem-solving strategies. These barriers are strongly linked to mathematics anxiety, which is evident through behaviors such as hesitation, avoidance, and reduced confidence during numeracy tasks. High-anxiety students often experience deeper conceptual misunderstandings and exhibit less persistence in solving problems. The results suggest that effective instructional approaches should not only address conceptual gaps but also incorporate emotional support to reduce anxiety and improve engagement. Future research is recommended to develop and test targeted interventions aimed at overcoming both cognitive and affective barriers in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study mapped how computational thinking (CT) has been integrated into mathematics education and how CT and mathematics learning outcomes have been evaluated in empirical Scopus-indexed research from 2016 to 2025. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The initial search retrieved 149 records, and 54 studies met the inclusion criteria for analysis. Data were extracted and analyzed using descriptive and thematic approaches. Findings show a rising publication trend with peak productivity around 2022–2023. Studies were dominated by Global North contexts, raising concerns about transferability to resource-limited settings. CT integration was most often tool-oriented, while unplugged and concrete-manipulative approaches emerged as feasible alternatives. From an assessment perspective, studies employed diverse approaches; however, inconsistencies in CT and mathematics indicators, fragmented measurement of the two domains, and limited cross-context and cross-level validation were evident, indicating that authentic assessments jointly capturing CT and mathematics achievement within a single task framework remain scarce.

Abstract

The low mathematical literacy of students, especially in formulating, using, and interpreting integer concepts in real contexts, shows that the learning that takes place is not able to connect abstract concepts with everyday situations. Conventional learning and the limitations of digital teaching materials integrated with Computational Thinking make students less facilitated to think logically and systematically in solving problems. This research aims to develop Computational Thinking-based E-LKPD  to improve the mathematical literacy skills of grade VII junior high school students. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model which includes five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The test subjects consisted of grade VII students at SMP Negeri 4 Madiun City. The research instruments include validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and pretest and posttest questions. Data collection techniques use questionnaires, observations, interviews, tests. Data analysis was carried out by processing scores from validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and pretest and posttest results into percentages to assess the quality of content, display, and experience of using products. The validation results showed that E-LKPD was classified as very valid, with a validity percentage of material experts of 86.25% and media experts of 85.7%. The practicality of E-LKPD is considered quite practical, with a percentage of 82.17% in limited trials and 82% in field trials. The effectiveness of E-LKPD is also quite effective, as shown by the increase in student learning outcomes through N-Gain scores of 67.5% (limited test, category of quite effective) and 61.5% (field test, category of quite effective).

Abstract

Teaching models currently play a crucial role in enhancing educational quality and improving student learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of three learning models—ILBIL (Inquiry Learning Based on Information Literacy), IBL (Inquiry-Based Learning), and conventional learning — on students’ mathematics learning outcomes in the topic of three-dimensional geometry. A quantitative approach was applied using a posttest control group design. The study population consisted of 143 students, and a cluster-random sampling technique was used to select 89 students from three classes. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires, and tests. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a 5% significance level, as performed in SPSS 25.00 for Windows. The results revealed: (1) a significance value of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, indicating that the ILBIL model was more effective than both the IBL and conventional models in terms of students’ learning outcomes; (2) a significance value of 0.196, which is greater than 0.05, suggesting that self-regulated learning did not significantly affect students’ learning outcomes; and (3) a significance value of 0.306, which is greater than 0.05, showing that the interaction between self-regulated learning and the learning model did not significantly influence students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

Rapid deployment of digital learning technologies in the higher education sector has created immense amounts of educational data that could be leveraged to enhance student success and institutional effectiveness. Nevertheless, student dropout, poor academic performance, and lack of retention continue to plague universities across the world. In most cases, identification of academically struggling students is often late since existing models are largely reactive. Therefore, there is need for development of advanced learning analytics models that are able to forecast student performance in higher education institutions. The current study seeks to create an artificial neural network (ANN)-based learning analytics framework to predict student success in higher education institutions. A predictive analytical approach based on quantitatively evaluating a sample of 1,000 undergraduate students was used in the current study. Various attributes used to evaluate the students included demographic information, academic performance, LMS activity, and learning behaviors. Learning analytics indicators used in the model included previous GPA, attendance rate, assignment completion rate, quiz scores, logins per week, learning hours per week, discussion engagement, engagement index, interaction scores, and learning consistency. In the analysis, the model was validated and tested against accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, ROC-AUC, confusion matrix, and cross validation tests. Results showed that accuracy, precision, recall, F1-Score, and ROC-AUC of the ANN model were 92.8%, 91.4%, 93.7%, 92.5%, and 0.96, respectively. Based on these outcomes, previous GPA, attendance rate, assignment completion rate, and various engagement indicators were found to be the strongest predictors of student success in college. On the theoretical front, contributions of this study include AI-assisted student performance and behavior prediction. Practically, a sophisticated warning system was developed in this study to assist in effective academic advisement and planning for student retention and academic improvement strategies.

Abstract

Despite the increasing emphasis on Computational Thinking (CT) in primary education, limited research has examined how CT can be systematically developed through mathematics learning trajectories situated in authentic sustainability contexts. This study aimed to design and validated a Computational Thinking Learning Trajectory (CTLT) that integrates four CT practices—Data Practices, Modeling and Simulation, Computational Problem-Solving, and Systems Thinking—through renewable energy optimization projects in primary mathematics classrooms. Using a design research approach, the study was conducted in three phases: preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. Participants were 30 fourth-grade students (aged 9–10 years) from an primary school in Madiun, Indonesia. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through observations, interviews, student artifacts, and assessment rubrics to investigate the emergence of CT practices during learning activities. The results, derived from rubric attainment scores and supported by qualitative evidence, showed that all CT practices emerged during learning activities, with Modeling and Simulation (93.3%), Computational Problem-Solving (83.3%), Data Practices (80%), and Systems Thinking (70%) demonstrating substantial levels of attainment. Students demonstrated a progression from arithmetic reasoning toward algorithmic and systems-oriented thinking as they analyzed data, constructed models, evaluated alternative renewable energy solutions, and optimized decision-making processes. The validated learning trajectory provides empirical evidence of how sustainability-based mathematical projects can support the development of CT in primary education. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on CT integration in mathematics curricula and offer practical guidance for implementing project-based learning within the Indonesian Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explain students' ability to recognize patterns (pattern recognition) when solving complex number exponentiation problems, especially in shapes with great rank. The focus of the research is directed at how students identify cyclic patterns and use those structures to simplify calculations. Methods – This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving three Grade XI students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through problem-solving tests, students’ written work documentation, controlled think-aloud protocols, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using interactive qualitative analysis consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to identify students’ pattern recognition processes in solving complex number exponentiation problems. Findings – The findings revealed that all participants successfully recognized the cyclic power pattern of the imaginary unit , namely and , which repeats every four powers. Students used this cyclic structure together with modulo 4 reasoning to simplify high-order exponentiation problems, such as determining the value of and simplifying expressions involving . Although the participants employed different solution strategies, all were able to identify the same underlying mathematical structure and arrive at correct solutions. These results indicate that pattern recognition plays a central role in supporting students’ mathematical reasoning and efficient problem-solving in complex number exponentiation. Research implications – These findings indicate that learning mathematics in complex number materials needs to emphasize the development of pattern recognition skills so that students can more easily understand abstract concepts and reduce computational burden. Originality – This research makes a new contribution by highlighting specifically how complex number cyclic patterns are used by students to solve large ranks, as well as mapping the variation of strategies that arise in the mathematical reasoning process.
