Abstract

Arabic language education in Indonesia faces the challenge of being perceived as mono-cultural and narrowly religious, often excluding broader multicultural contexts. This study explores Arabic language learning in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) across culturally diverse regions in Indonesia to identify how multicultural values are integrated into the curriculum. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research was conducted in six provinces: West Java, Central Java, East Java, Lombok, Bali, and Sulawesi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and surveys involving 50 Arabic teachers and 300 students in pesantren institutions. The findings reveal that Arabic learning in pesantren reflects four key dimensions of multicultural integration: cultural, social, intellectual, and spiritual. These dimensions shape learners’ engagement with Arabic not only as a religious language but also as a medium for intercultural dialogue and identity negotiation. Additionally, regional cultural influences significantly affect teaching strategies and learners’ motivations. The research highlights the potential of pesantren to serve as transformative spaces for multicultural Islamic education, bridging religious values with local cultural diversity. This study underscores the importance of recontextualizing Arabic instruction within Indonesia’s multicultural society, promoting inclusivity while maintaining pesantren’s core religious missions in the evolving landscape of education in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the learning obstacles experienced by eighth-grade students at a Madrasah Tsanawiyah in studying the topic of al-Afʿāl al-Muʿrabāt. A qualitative approach was employed using the Didactical Design Research (DDR) method. Participants included 47 students and one Arabic teacher. Data were collected through tests and non-test instruments, including in-depth interviews. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s framework, which involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students experienced both ontogenic and epistemological obstacles. Ontogenic obstacles included psychological factors (such as low motivation and interest) and instrumental difficulties, with technical incomprehension being the primary challenge. These findings suggest the need for instructional solutions. The study recommends the development of a DDR-based learning design tailored to students’ needs and informed by the identified learning obstacles.

Abstract

This study aims to develop the ARAB BETA learning application as an interactive medium to enhance students’ pronunciation skills in al-ashwat al-‘Arabiyyah (Arabic phonetics). The background of this research is based on the limitations of existing learning applications such as Duolingo and Kahoot, which do not offer specific features for intensive practice in the pronunciation of Arabic letters. The method used is Research and Development (RD) referring to the Borg and Gall development model. The research subjects were seventh-grade students at MTs Darul Musthofa Seluma during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Data collection techniques involved validation tests conducted by subject matter experts, media experts, and language experts, as well as limited trials involving students. The research findings indicate that the ARAB BETA application is feasible for use as an interactive learning medium in ilmu ashwat, with an average validation score categorized as "highly valid." The implication of this development is the availability of an Android-based digital learning medium that facilitates systematic and engaging instruction in al-ashwat al-‘arabiyyah.

Abstract

Arabic language education in Islamic boarding schools tends to use a traditional approach that focuses on memorizing language rules and understanding Arabic with a translation system. This traditional approach is considered to be the cause of students becoming bored in the process of learning Arabic. Therefore, to improve students' Arabic language skills, the H. Muhammad Nadis Bukittinggi Islamic Boarding School implements an extracurricular Arabic Club (AC). AC is an Arabic language learning program that is interactive, innovative and practical. This study aims to explore the implementation of AC extracurricular as a whole and its impact on improving students' listening and speaking skills, as well as explore various obstacles faced in its implementation. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, where data is collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results of the study show that AC extracurricular can improve students' listening and speaking skills, so that they are more confident in communicating using Arabic and improve their learning achievement. However, the implementation of this program still faces several obstacles, such as limited facilities, difficulty in controlling student focus, and schedule constraints that affect student participation. To overcome the existing obstacles, cooperation between teachers, students, and pesantren managers is needed so that the implementation of AC extracurricular can achieve optimal results.

Abstract

Problems surrounding child discrimination are increasingly emerging in society's social life. The rise in cases of immorality, violence and bullying against children is a strong reason for the importance of protecting children's rights. This is because the presence of children often becomes an outlet for violence, whether at home, school or in the environment. The aim of this research is to determine the implementation of learning organizations in creating child-friendly madrasas in Madrasah Aliyah Bandung Regency. The approach to this research uses a qualitative approach. The research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. This data analysis activity refers to theoretical references related to research problems, namely by taking the same information from various informants who are known to have an honest and open nature to reveal data related to the implementation of learning organizations in realizing child-friendly madrasas. The research results show that the implementation of Learning Organization (LO) at MAN 1 Bandung and MAN 2 Bandung has had a significant impact in realizing child-friendly madrasas. Through the Learning Organization (LO), the two madrasas can create a culture of sustainable learning, where all elements of the madrasah community, teachers, students, staff, parents and the community, are actively involved in the learning, evaluation and improvement process.

Abstract

Arabic plays an important role in the history of education in Indonesia and must remain as focus of attention. Arabic language learning at MTs under the Ministry of Religious Affairs needs to be well-integrated into the existing curriculum, so that it is relevant to the values promoted by the current vision of Indonesian Education, especially the Pancasila Student Profile which focuses on building the character of students. However, in practice, Arabic language teaching materials at MTs are not fully connected to these values.  For this reason, efforts are needed to test the feasibility of one of the teaching materials. In this context, the researcher chose the teaching material "al-Muthalaah" by Abu Abdurrohman to test its feasibility for the Pancasila Student Profile. Exploratory descriptives will be used in this feasibility test with the Miles and Huberman model data analysis technique. The validation test was carried out by two experts, including a material expert and a media expert. The validation test results show that al-Muthalaah's teaching materials received an average score of 87.75% and were categorized as extremely valid by material experts. The aspect of the relevance of teaching materials to the Pancasila Student Profile also received a high score with 95%. However, media experts gave an average score of 80% with the category being sufficiently valid and requiring slight revision. This shows that Al-Muthala'ah teaching materials were declared feasible and relevant to be applied in Arabic language learning at MTs. So that it can become practical material for aligning ourselves with the vision promoted by the government and also helps students understand and internalize the values that support their interactions with the surrounding environment.

Abstract

In cross-language communication, machine translation is an important tool that supports the understanding of meaning between speakers from different cultural backgrounds. This study compares the translation quality of expressive speech acts in the Masameer animation using two automatic translation engines: DeepL and Google Translate. Expressive speech acts rely heavily on pragmatic context and emotional expression, which presents a challenge due to the presence of implicit meanings, cultural values, and social nuances that are often difficult to translate automatically. This study employs a qualitative-comparative approach by analyzing 19 representative data points. The translations were assessed by two experts using Nababan’s model and validated through method triangulation, including interviews, content analysis, and theory-based discussions. The results show that Google Translate is superior in terms of accuracy (2.00 and 2.68) and acceptability (2.63), compared to DeepL, which scored 1.84 and 2.68 in accuracy and 2.36 in acceptability. However, both engines remain weak in translating metaphorical expressions and culturally specific contexts. This research fills a gap in comparative studies on Arabic-Indonesian machine translation and contributes to the development of translation technology and Arabic language learning, particularly in the areas of pragmatics and intercultural communication.
