Abstract

Developing Arabic speaking skills is essential in foreign language education, especially in effectively supporting students' communication abilities. However, teaching Arabic in educational institutions often challenges practicing active conversation. One of the methods considered effective in overcoming this obstacle is the direct method, which emphasizes the intensive use of the target language without translation. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the application of direct methods in learning Arabic speaking skills in the extracurricular activities of MA Persis Tarogong. The research method is qualitative with a case study approach, involving 26 students actively participating in extracurricular activities for one semester. Data are collected through a Likert scale questionnaire and in-depth interviews. The results show that most students feel comfortable and confident with the method and report increased vocabulary. However, the main challenges students face are the application of grammar in conversation and the lack of confidence in speaking outside the classroom. The implications of this study suggest the need for further support through grammar exercises and strategies to increase student’s confidence in using Arabic spontaneously.

Abstract

In the current era of digital development, Muslim societies have unique and impactful ways of welcoming Ramadan; for instance, "75 Kufic Towards Ramadan" was initiated by the Friends of Kufic Square Indonesia (FOKS Indonesia) community. This welcome enhances the daily posting of Kufic works on social media for 75 days leading up to Ramadan. However, sometimes ordinary people find reading and understanding posts difficult, even though they contain meaning. Therefore, based on this issue, this research aims to describe the heuristic and hermeneutic reading of the collection of calligraphic works, “75 Kufic Towards Ramadan”. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, employing content analysis techniques, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, focusing on Kufic texts shared in the "75 Kufic Towards Ramadan" series on FOKS Indonesia's official Instagram account (@foksindonesia). Subsequently, this data was analyzed using the heuristic and hermeneutic analysis techniques in Michael Riffaterre's semiotics. This study's findings are presented as an explanation of the heuristic and hermeneutic reading of the “75 Kufic Towards Ramadan” Kufic texts. Among these Kufic texts created by Kufiers are pieces of verse from the Quran, Hadith, and Mahfudzat in Arabic. These Kufic texts essentially represented deep feelings of joy for the Muslim community in welcoming Ramadan, which is full of glory and forgiveness. Consequently, people could receive positive messages and impressions when welcoming the month of Ramadan.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the general trends in the impact of audio-visual media. The research examines the effects of audio-visual media on listening skills and motivation in Arabic language learning, considering educational levels, research design, and the types of audio-visual media used. The results indicate that at the primary school level, animation media such as Animaker and cartoons are highly effective in enhancing listening skills and student motivation, as they offer an interactive and enjoyable learning experience. At the junior high school level, the use of interactive videos and popular platforms like YouTube shows significant improvements in listening skills and fosters student engagement through media that is familiar to their daily lives. At the senior high school level, the integration of complex content such as films and YouTube videos enhances listening skills and motivates students by connecting language learning to real-world contexts. Meanwhile, in higher education, more authentic audio-visual media, such as subtitled videos and films, help develop deeper listening skills, expand vocabulary, and encourage self-reflection through exposure to culturally rich content. Motivation for learning also progresses steadily, starting from an interest in animation at the primary level to an appreciation for contextual content at the higher education level. Overall, the study highlights the importance of adapting the type of audio-visual media according to the developmental stages of learners, thus supporting optimal listening skills and learning motivation at each educational level. The findings underscore the need for a targeted approach in media selection, considering the alignment between media and students' real-world interactions.

Abstract

This research discusses the analysis of speech acts in Abu Ubaidah's speech 36 days after the conflict between Hamas and Israel. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the types of illocutionary speech acts used in the speech based on John Searle's speech act theory. This research is important because it provides an in-depth understanding of how language is used in the context of conflict to achieve various communicative goals, as well as being a reference for the pragmatic linguistic study of John Searle's speech act theory as a language capable of producing action and providing additional information about the development of the Hamas-Israel conflict. The method used in this research is qualitative with library study techniques, allowing in-depth analysis of the speech material. The main findings of this research show that Abu Ubaidah's speech contains four types of illocutionary speech acts, namely assertive, directive, commissive and expressive. Examples of assertive speech acts include conveying information about war situations, while directive speech acts include praying and giving advice. Promises or oaths represent commissive speech acts, and expressive speech acts include greeting, criticizing, and praising. These results indicate that the speech was designed to not only convey information but also to motivate, inspire, and mobilize listeners. This research emphasizes the urgency of understanding language use in conflict contexts.
