Abstract

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of graded levels of cassava leaf meal (CLM) with varying cyanide content on growth performance of African catfish (Clariasgariepinus) fry. There were four groups of fish, each comprising 12 fish per group. One groupwas fed on a control diet (0 mg HCN/kg diet) with fish meal (FM) and soybean meal (SBM) asprotein source (30% CP). Groups two, three and four were fed graded levels of CLM to replace10, 20, and 30% of the total diet at the expense of SBM which contains 4.19, 7.47 and 11.96 mgHCN/ kg diet respectively. After 12 weeks, fish fed with increasing level of CLM showed asignificant growth depression and poor feed utilization compared to those fed the control diet.Apparent dry matter digestibility (ADMD) and apparent protein digestibility (APD) were alsosignificantly (P0.05) affected by cassava leaf meal inclusion, with the best values were found infish fed the control diet (52.26+0.24% and 83.11+1.17% for ADMD and APD respectively). Bodycomposition of fish fed higher CLM tended to have less protein and fat but more ash. The poormethionine availability as a result of low protein digestibility and the presence cyanide contentlimits the use of CLM in African catfish fry diet. Keywords: African catfish, cassava, growth, cyanide

Abstract

ABSTRAK. Efisiensi reproduksi ternak sangat ditentukan berdasarkan deteksi estrus. Reproductive efficiency of livestock is determined based on estrus detection. There are several indicators of estrus that can be used as a benchmark for estrous detection, including cervical mucous discharge. Cervical mucus will be observed for its physical properties including color, (appearance), consistency (viscosity), elasticity, ferning and pH. Observation of the viscosity value and typology of cervical ferning mucous was divided into two main factors in this study. The purpose of the study was to identify the variations in mucous cervical ferning between fertile Aceh cattle and repeat breeding. In this study, 10 Aceh cattle were used, consisting of 6 fertile cattle and 4 repeat breeding aged 3-5 years which had been synchronized with 5 mL of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2) intramuscularly with a single injection pattern. The determination of cervical mucous viscosity is measured based on the spinnbarkeit value detected at the peak of estrus. To determine the ferning typology, cervical mucous was applied to the glass object, allowed to dry, and then examined under a microscope. Ferning typology was classified based on the criteria of typical, atypical, and nil. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively and T-test. The results showed that there was no difference in cervical mucous viscosity, but there was a difference in ferning typology between repeat breeding and fertile Aceh cows.

Abstract

The long-term purpose of this community service is to support the autonomy of the university through independent income generation and to encourage the development of a culture of utilizing university research results for the community through the mobile veterinary clinic business carried out by Prof. Noerjanto Teaching Veterinary Hospital. To achieve above objectives, it was necessary to modify the existing clinic vehicle to include an operating room, mini-laboratory and pharmacy. The implementation of activities was carried out for five working days a week, by actively visiting smallholder livestock centers per village per day in the Aceh Besar areas. Services provided included livestock health consultation, treatment, vaccination (an effective measure as a form of protection for animals, synchronization of heat and artificial insemination, and assistance during birth. The diagnosis methods utilize the latest techniques, namely diagnosis and therapy techniques used in the field of veterinary medicine, which were the results of previous research. Mobile Clinic of Prof. Noerjanto's Teaching Veterinary Hospital had been modified by providing an operating table, mini laboratory, pharmacy, and repainting the car, thus increased the attractiveness of the community during the activities were carried out. Mass treatment of livestock in Aceh Besar district had reached the target which services covered five sub-districts. In conclusion, the mobile veterinary clinic in 2017 has successfully modified the clinic car and provided health services in 5 sub-districts in Aceh Besar District.

Abstract

The community service activity aims to establish a partnership system with breeders by providing limited goat assistance for six months or one reproductive cycle with the introduction of artificial insemination and ovulation manipulation technology, thus the strengthening of business capital can be increased. This activity involved ten target audiences from Ajee Rayeuk Village, Ingin Jaya Sub-District, Aceh Besar District. Criteria for the target audience were 1) having the lowest income, 2) having experience in raising goats whether their own goats or other people goats, 3) having a pen for at least 4 livestock, and, 4) having family members who are able and have time to focus on managing and caring for their livestock. The community service team was procuring goats based on the criteria that the goat have given birth, clinically healthy, and 3 years old, so the goats had a high productivity performance. The total number of goats provided was 30 goats, with three goats for each target audience. The goats were then subjected to ovulation manipulation technology and artificial insemination.
