Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of basic errors made by students and describe the appropriate form of scaffolding to assist students in solving exponential problems correctly. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. There are 2 research subjects, those are SMAN 21 Makassar students who were selected based on the results of a diagnostic test with the highest number of basic error indicators (T2 and T1). Data collection techniques used in this study were tests and interviews. The results showed that: (1) Students experienced basic errors in the form of; do not understand the basic concepts of integers; do not understand the basic concept of power numbers; do not understand the concept of performing algebraic operations; and do not understand the exponential rule. (2) The forms of scaffolding given to students are environmental provisions, explaining, reviewing and restructuring, and developing contextual thinking. (3) Based on the results of the final test after giving scaffolding, it was able to minimize the basic errors made by students on exponential questions.

Abstract

The research applied quasi-experimental design involving two groups that received treatment. The objective of the research was to find out the comparison of mathematics concept understanding between students who were taught by using Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR) and Reciprocal Teaching (RT) Learning Method. The sample of the research consisted of two classes who were decided by cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through the ability of students’ mathematics concept understanding instrument test and observation. The result of the research showed that 1) The learning process by using Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR) learning method was better to be applied in the VIII class of junior high school (SMPN) in Barru district 2) The students’ understanding of mathematics concepts that was taught by using Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR) was better than their understanding of mathematics concept that was taught by Reciprocal Teaching (RT) in learning Mathematics in the VIII class of junior high school (SMPN) in Barru district.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematics as a universal science has long been a part of human life, including in aspects of culture and architecture, as found in the architecture and artifacts of the Balla Lompoa traditional house in South Sulawesi. This study aims to reveal the concept of mathematics, especially in the material of flat geometry, as well as the cultural values contained in the architecture and artifacts of the Balla Lompoa traditional house in South Sulawesi. This type of research is qualitative research with an ethnomathematics approach. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation. This study applies technical triangulation. Data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the Balla Lompoa traditional house in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, has various flat geometry concepts that are integrated into its architecture and artifacts. Elements such as squares, rectangles, equilateral triangles, isosceles triangles, circles, trapezoids, and rhombuses are found in various elements of traditional buildings and artifacts. In addition to the mathematical aspect, this house also has strong philosophical and cultural values, reflecting the social structure and beliefs of the Gowa people. The implications of this study are that it not only enriches ethnomathematics literature but also contributes to a culture-based mathematics learning approach, which can improve students' understanding and interest in geometry material through local cultural contextualization.

Abstract

This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach to analyse the mathematical reasoning abilities of junior high school students when solving plane geometry problems, specifically focussing on their camper type adversity quotient. The research subjects consist of two students who were selected based on the Adversity Response Profile (ARP) questionnaire scores, namely two camper subjects with moderate scores. Furthermore, the researcher gave mathematical reasoning test questions on the quadrilateral material and conducted interviews with each subject. The researcher checked the validity of the data by using source triangulation. The analysis of mathematical reasoning ability is based on three indicators: finding mathematical patterns to make generalisations, performing mathematical manipulations, and drawing conclusions while compiling evidence and providing reasons for the correctness of the solution. The results of this research showed camper-type students used inductive reasoning, which is good in determining mathematical patterns, but cannot make appropriate generalisations of the patterns that were found. In doing mathematical manipulation, there are camper-type students who use trial and error strategies in solving geometry plane problems. Camper-type students can draw conclusions from a geometry plane problem but have difficulties in gathering evidence and providing reasons for the correct problem-solving.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between movie clips and students’ self-confidence of SMPN 18 Makassar students toward learning English using movie clips. The qualitative method was employed in this study. Students from SMPN 18 Makassar’s class VIII-5 participated in this study during the 2023-2024 school year. Simple random selection was used to choose ten students to participate. An interview is the tool utilized in this study to get information for the research question’s findings Overall, the majority of students gave positive responses to English learning using movie clips. Positive perceptions regarding English learning using movie clips were expressed as follows: 1) Increasing self-confidence, 2) increasing sense of independence, and 3) helping in learning. Therefore, it can be concluded that students have a positive perception of English learning using movie clips.
