Abstract

This research explored how EFL students perceived the implementation of self-directed learning through their process of composing travel writing. With the enhancement of the independent learning model, it had become an interesting investigation of students’ engagement in their creativity. Promoting self-directed learning through the students’ travel writing becomes one of the ultimate strategies that is potentially integrated into nowadays conditions since it addresses students to foster their learning style. This research was designed as a descriptive statistics method using self-directed learning analysis by Knowles (1975) and Garrison (1997) which was employed as the theoretical framework. A total of 17 EFL University Students who joined in creative writing class volunteered for this research to have a deep interview with comprehensive related questions through a questionnaire. Based on the creative writing class they chose; the respondents were chosen at random. The optional creative writing class, which is offered for two semesters, attracts students who are interested in improving their writing. They take several courses in the class that are focused on producing various kinds of creative writing products. The results of the study show: (i) the integration of self-directed learning in students’ travel writing encourages the improvement of student writing, (ii) there is a fostering of their cultural awareness, and (iii) a building of  their autonomous learning that covers three fundamental elements of self-directed learning, including self-management, self-monitoring, and motivation. Finally, promoting self-directed learning in students’ travel writing is incorporated properly to enhance the students learning model in an effective way for nowadays learning needs.

Abstract

The research set out to shed light on balancing awareness, a key Taoist concept that forms the basis of American science fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin's creative works. The balance in Le Guin's work represented the peaceful coexistence of conflicting forces. Le Guin applied Taoist ideas, such as the interdependence of two opposites and non-interference, to convey her concept of balance. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, published in 1969, served as the primary text for this qualitative study. In The Left Hand of Darkness, the concept of balance was built on transcending the binary split and forging peaceful connections between I and the Other. To reflect her Taoist understanding of the relationship between I and the Other, Le Guin created an androgynous universe in The Left Hand of Darkness and employed the concept of a journey to the alien territory. The results demonstrated that in Le Guin's make-believe world, the protagonists from two different cultural backgrounds completed their trip by bridging the mental division and acquiring Taoist wisdom. The Yin-Yang emblem and the reading of the ancient poem served as metaphors for the peaceful coexistence of dualistic opposites. By transcending dualistic opposites and recognizing a connection between I and the other, Le Guin's worldview, which drew inspiration from Taoism, achieved holistic success.

Abstract

Abstract. Metacognitive awareness has been recognized as a predictor of learning outcome, especially in tertiary level of education, and particularly in second and foreign language teaching and learning of writing. This component is crucial for EFL students whose first language is not English. In order to fulfill the demands of their own academic careers and future studies, there is a rising requirement for students to acquire more in-depth topic knowledge and to improve their text-analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation skills. However, few studies have been conducted to examine metacognitive awareness in relation to argumentative writing. This study reports a quantitative study that investigates the correlation between EFL students’ metacognitive awareness and argumentative writing performance. Data collected in this study include a questionnaire and argumentative writing scores. Participants were 30 EFL students at one of the universities in Indonesia. The findings reveal that students’ metacognitive awareness is at an intermediate level while it was statistically insignificant that a relationship between their metacognitive awareness and their argumentative writing performance. The results suggest urgent action from EFL teachers and stake-holders to seek a feasible solution to foster students’ implementation of their metacognitive awareness into their writing and other language skills. Keywords: Argumentative writing, correlational study, EFL students, metacognitive awareness.

Abstract

Microbiology literacy development shapes people's attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions toward microorganisms. This study aims to explore the relationship between microbiological literacy and people's perceptions and attitudes towards microorganisms. This study uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method to analyze the relationship between microbiological literacy and public knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of microorganisms. Data were retrieved from Scopus using relevant keywords and then filtered based on the following criteria: published between 2019–2024, in English, and open access. The analysis was conducted through four steps: coding, concept review, and summarizing key information (author, year, and core concepts). The results were synthesized to map the relationship between microbiological literacy and public perceptions. The results showed that respondents' knowledge levels varied about various health issues. Good microbiological knowledge can improve health literacy, affecting individual attitudes and perceptions of health. Regarding respondents' attitudes, it is known that respondents are interested in education and health awareness. A positive attitude toward health can encourage actions that support public health. In contrast, individuals with low microbiology knowledge orientation are more likely to cause negative perceptions and distrust of health interventions. Continuous, evidence-based education is essential to improve microbiology and health literacy and shape positive attitudes toward health interventions. Microbiology knowledge has a broad impact on daily life and the future. However, there are significant challenges in understanding microbiology. Public perception of microbes is often only associated with 'germs' and negative images. Therefore, microbiology knowledge in learning must be presented in visual arts and visual, olfactory, and tactile experiences. The more we understand the role and knowledge of microbes, the better we can make relevant decisions.

Abstract

German is widely taught as a foreign language (DaF; Deutsch als Fremdsprache) in Indonesia. However, observations during German language instruction at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) have revealed that writing skills pose a significant challenge for many learners. Preliminary observations suggest that diverse language proficiency levels is a primary contributing factor to this challenge. Notably, a substantial portion of German Education students at UNESA did not have prior German language course’s exposure in high school. In light of these observations, the present study underscores the urgency of implementing Binnendifferenzierung, a differentiated instruction approach, to address the diverse skill levels among learners. This qualitative descriptive research aims to describe the implementation of Binnendifferenzierung—differentiation learning—in the "Thematisches Schreiben" (Thematic writing) course. The study employed one form of differentiation: Differenzierung nach Aufgaben (task differentiation). Differenzierung nach Aufgaben involved introducing two variations of writing exercises at the A2 level: Aufgabe A. These variations included (a) vocabulary enrichment exercises, (b) guided writing with keywords, (c) serial writing based on cartoon images, and (d) free-theme writing. Differenzierung nach Sozialformen involved differentiating the teaching methods based on learners' preferences and learning styles. The findings of the study demonstrate that the implementation of Binnendifferenzierung in both forms effectively accommodated the heterogeneity of learners and provided opportunities for individualized learning tailored to their interests and abilities. This approach also introduced variations that aligned with the diverse needs of the learners.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of multicultural education at MA Darussalam Sengkubang, a madrasah inhabited by students from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study indicate that multicultural education is implemented through integration in subjects such as Citizenship Education and Social Sciences, as well as in self-development activities, both programmed such as extracurricular and unprogrammed such as morning prayers and national commemoration ceremonies. Supporting factors for the implementation of multicultural education include a school climate that accepts diversity, the role of teachers, and supporting facilities and infrastructure. However, there are several obstacles such as the lack of learning media about diversity, individual attitudes that are less open to differences, and minimal socialization for teachers. Efforts to overcome these obstacles are carried out by instilling values ??of tolerance and respect for differences through school policies, adding educational media, and increasing socialization for teachers and students. This study recommends improving supporting facilities for multicultural education and special training for teachers so that they are able to integrate the concept of multiculturalism effectively in learning.
