Abstract

This article analyzes Becky Albertalli’s Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda (2015) through the lens of gender performativity issues. The performativity experiences of a homosexual person are known to question American society's established beliefs about how individuals should perceive, respond to, and experience gender and sexuality. This research illustrates how gender and sexual identity, as well as cultural constructions of gender and attitudes toward specific sexual orientations, are viewed in the novel's notion of performativity. The article's discussion is framed using Judith Butler's idea of gender performativity.  Through the thematic analysis of the work, it was discovered that societal norms governed gender through a series of performativity. The book's main character, Simon, discovers that it is challenging to express his identity as a homosexual because of the pressure from cultural norms that view people by using sexual orientations other than those of commoners as deviants. However, the main character changes the social perspective so that the idea of having a different sexual orientation is accepted through a series of events.

Abstract

Abstract

The animated film Encanto, which told the narrative of a magical Colombian family, introduced a new paradigm in the representation of women in the film industry. The unconventional female characters in this Disney-produced picture drew public notice and helped it win Academy Awards.  The multiple feminisms represented by these female figures are investigated descriptively and qualitatively. Data were gathered by watching the sequences of Encanto's film and paying attention to how feminism is depicted; taking pictures of each scene that depicts feminism; and then inventorying the acquired data. The data was evaluated and classified according to the feminism depicted in the scenes and discussions using John Fiske's semiotic theory. Existentialist Feminism, Postmodern Feminism, Psychoanalytic Feminism, and Ecofeminism Feminism were discovered to be the feminism streams portrayed in Encanto's animated films. These diverse streams of feminism are a breath of fresh air, breaking the preconceptions of female protagonists in prior Disney animated films.

Abstract

Abstract

Risk perception and critical thinking have become the two important cognitive skills for adolescents to possess in order to prevent risky online behavior such as spreading fake news. These skills are related to digital literacy and can be improved through training. However, most of the existing literature is in digital literacy training, online risk perception, and critical thinking by using correlational approach and conventional digital literacy training. For this reason, this research aimed to integrate Islamic values into digital training to improve risk perception and critical thinking skills among Muslim adolescents. This study hypothesized that digital literacy based on Islamic values can improve adolescents risk perception and critical thinking skills. To test this hypothesis, a pre-test post-test within experimental research design involving 112 Muslim adolescents in Surabaya was conducted. The participants were provided with digital literacy training which was embedded with Islamic values in four training sessions. The risk perception and critical thinking scale were used to measure each dependent variable. The results of data analysis using the paired sample t-test showed that there were significant differences in the scores of risk perception and critical thinking skills before and after training. Thus, the hypotheses in this study were accepted. The practical implications of the results of this study are also discussed.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to seek information about the factors causing code switching and code mixing in the post-pandemic learning process of the Indonesian language in class XII Social Sciences at SMA YP Unila. This study uses a descriptive approach. The data collected are in the form of words, pictures, and not numbers. This research leads to an in-depth description of the meaning, clarification, and placement of data in their respective contexts and describes them in the form of words from numbers. The total code-switching in learning interactions is one-word data, two phrases, and five sentences; this shows that students' and teachers' interest in code-switching in both classes is shallow. As in code-switching, the form of code mixing in its interaction is divided into internal code-mixing and external code-mixing. In internal code-mixing, the language used is the insertion of Javanese in Indonesian sentences. Meanwhile, in external code-mixing, the language used is the insertion of English and Arabic in the interaction of Indonesian language learning. The implication aims to make it easier for teachers and students to understand word insertion during learning interactions and quickly understand what other people say when communicating. Keywords: Code-Switching, Code-Mixing, Indonesian Learning
