Abstract

This research aims to identify the determining factors for the transmission of fishing between generations and analyze the intergenerational model with the variable parental support in creating sustainable livelihood activities in coastal areas. This research uses a seemingly unrelated bivariate probit regression model and multinomial logistic regression with 270 samples. The results show that the intergenerational transmission of fishing work depends on the father's hopes and also the child's wishes, while the father's hopes of wanting his child to become a fisherman like himself (which is the cause of endogeneity) depends on the child's liking for the sea, the education of household head, the experience of household head. steps, the conditions of fishing business and community participation. From the multinomial logistic regression model, the results show that variables that describe economic and social conditions play an important role in the decision to occur intergenerational transmission.

Abstract

Abstract

The shift from traditional to modern harvesting methods has significantly impacted the labor structure of rural farmers. Traditional harvesting technologies, which actively engaged women, contrast with modern mechanized harvesting techniques that exclude women from harvesting activities. This study aims to analyze the development of harvesting technologies in Cikeusik Village and examine the effects of modernization on women’s roles, social positions, and power relations within the agrarian structure of Cikeusik Village. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis for data collection. The informants consisted of six female farmers, two combine harvester operators, and two community leaders, selected purposively using snowball sampling techniques. The findings reveal three distinct phases of harvesting technology in Cikeusik: traditional harvesting using ani-ani (pre-1970), the transition from ani-ani to sickles and threshing (1980–2017), and the use of combine harvesters (2017–present). The introduction of combine harvesters drastically reduced women’s participation in harvesting activities, shifting a previously female-dominated labor force to a task performed exclusively by a few male operators. Consequently, women lost a source of seasonal income and transitioned primarily into entrepreneurship or conventional domestic roles.

Abstract

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), through their advocacy program, have succeeded in protecting the housemaids and their employers, both at provincial as well as national levels. Some regulations on this issue have been issued as results of their advocacy program include: SuratEdaranGubernur DIY Tahun 2003 (Governor of Yogyakarta’s Handbill 2003), Peraturan Gubernur DIY No. 48 Tahun 2010 (Governor of Yogyakarta’s Bylaw 2010), Peraturan Walikota Yogyakarta No. 31 Tahun 2011, (Mayor of Yogyakarta City’s Bylaw 2011), and Peraturan Menteri Ketenagakerjaan RI No.2 Tahun 2015 (Ministry of Labor’s Law No.2/2015). This paper discusses some difficulties in implementing those regulations, especially related to the debatable content, such as: the definition of Pembantu Rumah Tangga/PRT (Housemaids), whether they are considered as “helpers” or “labor”; deciding their working hours; having a written or oral contract; and involving the third parties in the relationship between housemaids and their employers. Some reasons are found in explaining those difficulties: in any situation, PRT (housemaids) are considered as an informal work; there is a strong notion of familial relationship, where emotional relation is preferred than formal relationship. One thing that should be noted related to the importance of legal protection for housemaids is the need of continuous advocacy in dealing with managing their relationships with others, especially employers and the third parties. Keywords: PRT (housemaid), Employer, Regulations, Formal and Familial Relationship

Abstract

This study analyzes how agricultural extension services and various forms of livelihood capital influence rice farmers' climate resilience and farm sustainability in West Java, Indonesia. 371 Karawang and Subang Regencies respondents were surveyed using a structured questionnaire covering farmers engaged in intensive and semi-intensive rice production systems. The study employed Structural Equation Modeling using Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to assess the direct and indirect effects of human, social, natural, financial, and physical capitals and extension services on resilience capacity and farming sustainability. The results show that human capital, natural capital, social capital, financial capital, and extension services all significantly positively affect resilience capacity. In turn, resilience capacity is a key mediating variable contributing to farm sustainability. Among the variables analyzed, agricultural extension services strongly influenced sustainability outcomes. Furthermore, the Importance-Performance Map Analysis (IPMA) reveals that financial and natural capital are high-priority areas for intervention due to their strategic influence and current performance gaps. These results underscore the need to enhance farmer access to inclusive and adaptive financial services, improve natural resource governance, and strengthen the quality and contextual relevance of agricultural extension. The study recommends a shift toward a pluralistic and resilience-oriented extension model that integrates local knowledge, livelihood assets, and climate adaptation strategies to build sustainable and climate-resilient farming systems.

Abstract

Abstract The social structure of inland fisheries communities tends to place powerful elites in important positions, while local fishermen are subordinate actors. Patronage is a form of social relationship that describes the unequal social structure between these actors. This research aimed to analyze social structure in the inland waters of South Sumatra in the practice of the Lebak Lebung and River Auction (L3S) in OKI District. To achieve this goal, a constructivist paradigm with qualitative research methods was employed, and the sample comprised 39 informants selected as subjects. The data analysis was conducted in three distinct stages, namely data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the regulation of open access for all parties in the local government regime after 1982 created an institutionalized social relations structure where the government, investors, traders, middlemen, and non-fishing actors dominated compared to the fishermen. The participants in this social landscape strived to accumulate capital to enhance their competitiveness within the L3S domain. A patronage system was implemented with middlemen assuming the role of patron and the fishermen acting as their clients. The current institutional social structure has created an unfair distribution of resource benefits for fishing workers. The novelty theories were found in the working relations of the inland waters community of South Sumatra, namely stratified distribution of rights, dual status, multi-stage patronage, and the positive function of patronage for chief fisherman. Further research should be conducted to research policy revitalization and develop strategic inland water management models. Highlight Research The author mentioned 3 highlights from their results research: Auction system in inland waters in South Sumatra presents an unfair distribution for fishermen. Structure of the working relationship formed is an asymmetric patron-client relationship but with novel theories such as the stratified distribution of rights model, dual status, multi-stage patronage, and the positive function of patronage. An imbalance in local access to auction objects due to their weak ability to accumulate capital.

Abstract

In implementing evidence-based policies, it is necessary to support poverty data that is precise, accurate, and consistent. The goal is that various assistance, such as social assistance, PKH, groceries, pre-employment, and other subsidies, will be right on target for people experiencing poverty. The diversity of poverty data sources will have implications for the inaccuracy of targeting social assistance recipients. Until now, there are still three sources of poverty data, namely the Statistics Indonesia, the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) with Integrated Data on Social Welfare (DTKS), and TNP2K, which is now under the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko KMK) which also releases data targeting the Acceleration of Extreme Poverty Elimination (P3KE). The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution of poverty data and rank analysis of poverty data from three data sources in the Bekasi Regency. The analysis method used ArcGIS 10.4 software and the administrative map shapefile for the Bekasi Regency area. In the ranking analysis of poverty data from three data sources in each sub-district in Bekasi Regency, the Preference Ranking Organization Methods For Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) method was used. The results of the analysis showed that the distribution of P3KE data is 1,317,098 people spread by decile-1 to decile-4 in all sub-districts of Bekasi Regency. Statistics Indonesia data is 229,367 people spread across each sub-district, and the number of DTKS in Bekasi Regency is 1,035,402 people, with the most distribution of data in Babelan District, namely 110,867 people out of 34,009. While the best ranking of the three sources of poverty data is Central Cikarang, Pebayuran District (0.7273), North Tambun (0.6364), Cibitung and Karang Bahagia (0.4242), North Cikarang (0.3939), South Tambun (0 .3636), Sukatani (0.2121), Serang Baru (0.1515), West Cikarang (0.1212), Tarumajaya (0.0909), East Cikarang (0.0606).

Abstract

Structural poverty in Muara Gembong District, Bekasi Regency, Indonesia, remains a serious issue affecting small-scale fishermen. This study examines the poverty conditions of fishermen’s households using quantitative and qualitative approaches. A census of 31 households and interviews with 5 key informants reveal that all households’ experience income decline during the lean season, keeping them below the poverty line. The stark income fluctuations between fishing and non-fishing periods show their economic vulnerability. Poverty among these fishermen is multidimensional, covering inadequate access to food, health, housing, and education-meeting the definition of poverty in Law No. 13 of 2011 Republic of Indonesia on Handling the Poor. Using Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory, poverty is interpreted as the result of interactions between social structures and individual agency. The study uniquely applies this theory to explore fishermen’s poverty from a multidimensional perspective. Findings show that political-economic structures, environmental degradation, policy failures, limited capital and technology, patron-client systems, and unequal market access restrict social mobility. To overcome these challenges, comprehensive and cross-sectoral policy interventions are required to address the structural roots of poverty and improve the resilience and welfare of small-scale fishermen.
