Abstract

Nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) was successfully synthesized from banana sheath waste and demonstrated promising potential for applications in biocomposites, sustainable materials, and biomedical fields. This study aimed to produce CNC through an environmentally friendly chemical process while investigating the effects of bleaching temperature and acid concentration on CNC yield and properties, in accordance with ISO/TS 20477:2017. The process involved delignification using 17% NaOH at 100°C for 1.5 hours to remove lignin, followed by bleaching with 10% H₂O₂ for 1.5 hours at various temperatures (70°C–90°C) to enhance cellulose purity. Acid hydrolysis using H₂SO₄ at concentrations of 10%–30% was conducted at 45°C for 40 minutes to break down amorphous regions and form nanocrystalline structures. Chesson-Datta analysis revealed cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents of 80.32%, 5.257%, and 3.26%, respectively. Optimal conditions were found at 80°C bleaching temperature and 10% acid concentration, yielding 2.5606 g of CNC. SEM-EDX analysis showed smooth fibrous morphology with 63.55% carbon and 35.83% oxygen content, while XRD analysis indicated particle sizes ranging from 8.76 to 24.12 nm, with an average of 14.25 nm.

Abstract

Cardamom fruit contains the essential oils cineol, terpineol and borneol which have the potential to act as antibacterials against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. This study aimed to determine the percentage yield of essential oil and the value of the inhibition zone for the antibacterial activity of cardamom fruit oil. The research method begins with the preparation of dried simplicia from cardamom fruit, which is then distilled using water steam. The essential oil obtained was subjected to antibacterial activity using the well diffusion method. The results of the research showed that the yield of cardamom fruit essential oil was 1,66%. Cardamom fruit simple powder contains secondary metabolite compounds alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, triterpenoids and polyphenols. The antibacterial activity test against Propionibacterium acnes at concentrations of 3%, 6%, and 12% produced inhibition zones of 3.2 mm, 4.7 mm, and 10.1 mm, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that at concentrations of 3% and 6%, it is included in the medium category, while at a concentration of 12%, it is included in the strong category. Abstract

Discussing students' academic achievement is inevitably linked to their upbringing while receiving an education at their Islamic boarding school (pondok pesantren). Learning achievements are typically derived from formal and non-formal education. However, Al Mardliyyah Islamic Boarding School in Demangan, Madiun City, employs a unique strategy to support its students' academic achievement: the implementation of educative punishment. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The informants in this study were the head of the boarding school, a female teacher (ustadzah), security personnel, administrative staff, and student representatives. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis technique involved data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Data validity was checked using triangulation techniques. The results show that the implementation of educative punishment at Al Mardliyyah Islamic Boarding School in Demangan Taman, Madiun City, emphasizes constructive learning and character development, devoid of physical or mental violence. The application of this punishment also supports students' academic achievement through learning facilities and a structured daily schedule, which ultimately fosters discipline and responsibility in their formal education. Despite facing several obstacles, such as changes in management, the diverse characters of the students, and a lack of understanding from parents and the community, educative punishment remains effective when applied consistently, communicatively, and wisely in accordance with Islamic values.

Abstract

Urban air pollution is a growing environmental concern, particularly in rapidly developing cities where vehicular emissions contribute significantly to deteriorating air quality. This study investigates the correlation between stomatal density in jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk.) leaves and air quality in Bandar Lampung, focusing on two high-traffic urban locations: Sultan Agung Street and Pangeran Emir M Noer Street. Using a quantitative approach, leaf samples were collected through purposive sampling and analyzed for stomatal density using light microscopy (400× magnification). Concurrently, air quality was measured by assessing carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) concentrations, which were compared against National Ambient Air Quality Standards (PP No. 41 of 1999). The results indicate a positive correlation between traffic intensity and stomatal density, suggesting that jackfruit trees increase stomatal density as an adaptive response to vehicular pollution. However, while enhanced stomatal density may improve CO₂ uptake for photosynthesis, excessive stomatal opening could lead to higher pollutant absorption, necessitating stomatal closure mechanisms during peak pollution periods. The findings confirm that jackfruit trees can serve as effective bioindicators for urban air pollution monitoring, given their physiological adaptability and widespread distribution in tropical urban settings. This research underscores the potential of plant-based bioindicators in sustainable air quality assessment and urban environmental management strategies.

Abstract

Compared with classical Utilization of medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory properties, it needs to be done to find alternative treatments with relatively more minor side effects, such as Syzygium myrtifolium walp. This study aims to determine the effective dose of ethanol extract of pucuk merah as an anti-inflammatory in 30 male white rats of the Wistar strain. Testing the extract's anti-inflammatory effect was measured by measuring the edema volume on the soles of the rats' feet after being induced with 1% carrageenan with a pletismometer. The test animals were divided into six treatment groups, namely group 1 negative control (Na CMC 1%), group 2 positive control (Na Diclofenac 50 mg/KgBW), group 3 (dose of pucuk merah leaves extract 75 mg/KgBW), group 4 (quantity of pucuk merah leaves extract 100 mg/kgBW), and group 5 (amount of pucuk merah leaves extract 125 mg/kg BW), with observation times of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes. The results showed that rats in group 5 with a dose of pucuk merah (125 mg/kgBW) had the best anti-inflammatory effect, with an anti-inflammatory potential of 97% compared to diclofenac sodium.

Abstract

The increasing incidence of infections and drug resistance has led scientists to seek approaches towards medicinal plants that are potentially effective against many microorganisms. Therefore, this study was planned to assess the antibacterial activity of 3 mangrove species (Scyphipora hydrophylaceae C.F.Gaertn., Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt and Avicennia alba Blume) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. This study used the disc diffusion method to measure the diameter of inhibition at several concentrations of mangrove leaf ethanol extracts, namely 15%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25% and 0.625% b/v as well as positive control cefadroxil for bacteria and DMSO as negative control. The test results showed that ethanol extracts of mangosteen leave Scyphipora hydrophylaceae C.F.Gaertn and Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt had a solid response to Escherichia coli bacteria and moderate potential against S. Aureus bacteria—no antibacterial activity against both test bacteria for Avicennia alba mangrove. This study concludes that Scyphipora hydrophylaceae C.F.Gaertn and Lumnitzera littorea (Jack) Voigt have potent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, but Avicennia alba has no antibacterial activity.
