Abstract

This study investigates parents' perceptions of early childhood English language education in Jakarta, Indonesia. With an increasing emphasis on English proficiency in a globalized world, understanding parental attitudes toward introducing English early age is essential. This research employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing a survey questionnaire to gather insights from 52 parents, consisting of 40 mothers and 12 fathers, whose children were between 3 to 6 years old. The survey revealed that 92% of parents agreed that early English education enhances language development, 88% believed it provides a competitive edge, 83% considered it crucial for opportunities, and 74% saw its potential to boost cognitive skills. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 participants, selected through purposive sampling, to delve deeper into parental perceptions, providing further insight. The findings underscore parents' collective recognition of the positive impact of early English education on language development and cognitive skills, presenting a valuable resource for parents seeking informed decisions about their children's early language learning journey. The study offers input for educators, policymakers, and curriculum designers aiming to create effective early English programs resonating with parental perspectives.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivations of pre-service English teachers at Esa Unggul University, Indonesia, after completing the teaching practicum. A mixed methods approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires with 36 pre-service teachers. Additionally, in-depth insights were gained from interviews with ten participants. McClelland's motivation theories - the need for power, affiliation, and achievement - guided the analysis. The findings indicate a strong inclination toward the need for achievement, emphasizing personal growth, academic excellence, and continuous learning. Pre-service teachers are dedicated to improving their teaching skills and positively impacting students. The need for power showed moderate motivation, reflecting interest in making an impact and seeking leadership roles. The need for affiliation demonstrated moderate motivation, highlighting the importance of positive relationships and collaboration. The teaching practicum significantly influenced pre-service teachers' motivations and commitment to a teaching career. Implications for teacher education programs underscore the necessity of supporting and recognizing pre-service teachers' motivations for a successful teaching profession.

Abstract

The increasing popularity of social media apps has the potential to provide teachers and students with a platform for innovative and engaging language learning, one of which is TikTok. However, there is a lack of investigation and explanation on to what extent and how videos available on TikTok can enhance interaction and activities in language learning classrooms. Therefore, this study aims to examine the existence of CEFR interaction competence in communicative activities and its level on selected TikTok videos. This study applied a content analysis method with a qualitative approach using the CEFR reference of the illustrative descriptor scale. The top 250 learning videos from the search results for the hashtag #learnenglish were collected. The findings show that most activities were found in overall oral interaction with a score of 291 and the level was A2 with 46% of occurrences. The findings demonstrate that TikTok learning videos are well-suited as teaching materials for classes at the A2 proficiency level with general oral interaction activities.

Abstract

As a widely established scale a standardized assessment of language competency in Europe as well as worldwide, CEFR provides a clear baseline for assessing language ability. However, its representation in videos on TikTok, as one of the most potential language learning platforms remained unexplored. This study seeks to examine communicative language strategies linked with the CEFR in TikTok videos. Using a qualitative method and ATLAS.ti software, the data were collected from 200 videos using the hashtags #learnenglish and #communicationstrategies. Production was recognized as the most common communication strategy, with planning appearing in 43 videos. Moreover, videos in the B1 level were the most frequent, appearing in 86 videos. The results suggest that a systematic strategy, as seen in TikTok videos, requires a well-designed learning plan that includes regular intervals for listening, speaking, reading, and writing practice. Future studies should encourage educators to adopt these practices, to promote successful language education.

Abstract

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) provides a standardized measure of language proficiency, guiding language learning and assessment globally. With the increasing use of digital media, videos have become an influential tool in language acquisition. TikTok, as a popular social media platform, offers engaging content that may support language learning. However, limited research has explored how TikTok videos align with CEFR communicative competence descriptors. This study aims to analyze the CEFR competence level of reception communicative activities in TikTok videos using the illustrative descriptor scale. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes ATLAS.ti software to analyze 200 TikTok videos collected through the hashtag #learnenglish. The findings reveal that the most frequently occurring descriptor is overall oral comprehension, appearing in 62 videos, while the A1 level is the most represented, accounting for 25% (50 videos). These results suggest that TikTok videos predominantly cater to beginner-level learners. The study highlights the potential of TikTok as a supplementary language learning tool and provides insights for future research on optimizing digital platforms for CEFR-aligned language education.
