Abstract

Effective communication between Hajj guides (ustaz pembimbing) and pilgrims is a key factor in ensuring the success of Hajj guidance services in Indonesia. In practice, however, communication barriers often disrupt interactions, reduce service effectiveness, and weaken interpersonal trust. This study aims to identify and analyze the communication barriers faced by the guides of Kelompok Bimbingan Ibadah Haji dan Umrah (KBIHU) Al Waritsah, Group 16, Bandung City, during the 2024 Hajj season. The analysis draws on the perspective of interpersonal communication and the concept of communication barriers, considering affective, structural, relational, cultural, and perceptual/intrapersonal dimensions. The uniqueness of this case lies in three specific conditions shaping the communication dynamics: the absence of the KBIHU leader for the first time, the sudden onset of dementia symptoms in an elderly pilgrim that the KBIHU had never previously handled, and the presence of a pilgrim from the Persatuan Islam (Persis) organization within a KBIHU affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). This study employed a qualitative case study approach, conducting in-depth interviews with three guides and eight pilgrims representing diverse ages and educational backgrounds. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal five main categories of communication barriers: (1) affective barriers involving negative emotions and complaints, (2) structural-hierarchical barriers related to social status distance, (3) relational barriers stemming from unmet role expectations, (4) cultural and ideological barriers due to differences in religious affiliation, and (5) perceptual and intrapersonal barriers involving prejudice and internal conflict. These findings provide valuable insights for developing more empathetic, open, and adaptive communication strategies for Hajj guides, and offer practical recommendations for KBIHU and the Ministry of Religious Affairs in designing training programs, emergency response protocols, and inclusive guidance models that address the diverse backgrounds of pilgrims.

Abstract

Politicians around the world are increasingly using social media platforms as a means to engage with the public and conduct election campaigns. However, the true impact of social media campaigns on political outcomes remains untested and empirical evidence is scant. This research aims to review the existing literature on this issue to explore the impact of social media on political participation. The widespread use of social media by the public has attracted the attention of politicians as a platform for election campaigns. This type of research is a literature review by analyzing previous research qualitatively. The results show that social media has a significant impact on political participation. Social media platforms provide powerful new tools for individuals to engage in the political process and make their voices heard. However, it is important to be aware of the potential challenges of using social media for political participation and to use it responsibly and ethically. Social media has a significant role in expanding access to political information, mobilizing public participation, and reaching marginalized voters. Social media provides an inclusive platform for individuals to participate in political discussions, organize political movements, and strengthen democracy by ensuring the voices of all citizens are heard. However, challenges such as the digital divide and imbalances in social media use also need to be addressed so that the full potential of social media in democracy can be realized. Therefore, joint efforts from governments, NGOs, social media platform providers and the general public are needed to ensure that social media is used responsibly and inclusively in supporting democratic political processes.

Abstract

Abstract

The Regional Head Election in Sumedang Regency carries out campaign or political communication activities by preparing political communication management. The four candidates carried out political communication via social media with several successful teams from the four Sumedang Regional Election candidates. Candidate pair number 2 won with 313,117 votes or around 49.49% of the vote. By gaining votes from social media through Gen Z and millennials, most of whom are social media users. The couple only received 46% of the vote, while the remaining 54% were Generation X voters and the elderly generation. This makes the implementation of political communication management ineffective because political communication via social media does not bring much increase in votes from millennials in Sumedang Regency who are still not politically literate. The aim of this research is to find out and analyze the extent to which the message delivery strategy and political communication ethics of the Sumedang Regent candidate influence the success of digital campaigns on social media. The research method uses quantitative descriptive methods with data collection techniques using observation, questionnaires and literature studies, while data analysis uses data quality tests, classical assumption tests, multiple linear regression tests and hypothesis tests. According to the research results, only the political communication ethics variable (X2) partially influences the success of the digital campaign (Y), while the simultaneous results of the message delivery strategy variable (X1) and the political communication ethics variable (X2) have a very strong influence on the digital campaign success variable (Y).
