Abstract

The number of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is steadily increasing. HIV/AIDS is caused by a virus that infects the body and weakens the immune system, making it difficult to fight germs, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens. HIV and AIDS are still considered taboo diseases that should not be openly discussed. People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are discouraged from seeking treatment due to stigma and discrimination. Eliminating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS will improve the process of preventing and overcoming HIV/AIDS cases. In addition, therapeutic communication also affects interpersonal relationships. This research aims to figure out how the therapeutic communication efforts of People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) become survivors. The method used in this research is phenomenology, where the informants in this study are people with HIV/AIDS who live in Surabaya. This study concludes that therapeutic communication efforts to People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are by presenting volunteers who help people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) based on the same fate as People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The presence of volunteers (PLWHA) assists and bridges the gap between patients and therapy, fostering a sense of comfort for PLWHA. They also make other patients feel more at ease while they are receiving treatment in the hospital.

Abstract

Inik Kebayan folklore is a story that lives in the midst of the Dayak Seburuang community. This story involves three main characters, namely Sekling and Kumang as husband and wife, and Grandmother Kebayan. There is also a side character named Temprung, who is Sekling's brother. In addition, there are several supporting characters who only appear once in the story, such as a woodcutter, a rubber cutter, a man who burns the fields, a rice harvester, a grass puller, a rice pounder, and a person who cooks new rice, which gives Kumang directions about Sekling's whereabouts. Inik Kebayan folklore includes three main cultural elements, namely man's relationship with God, man's relationship with nature, and man's relationship with man. Man's relationship with God is reflected in the piety and devotion shown by Kumang, who faithfully follows the instructions of Nenek Kebayan, a figure who is clearly not human. The relationship between humans and nature is seen in the wise way humans utilize natural resources as a form of gratitude to God. Man's relationship with man in this story is shown through the attitude of helping, harmony, wisdom, and compassion. Throughout the story, Inik Kebayan tells of the cultural values upheld by the Seburuang Dayak community, including piety to God, wisdom in utilizing natural resources, as well as helpfulness, harmony, wisdom, and compassion between people. The story provides a deep understanding of life and the values held by the Seburuang Dayak community.

Abstract

The Melawi Malay community has a rich tradition of medicine using oral literature in the form of mantras, passed down through generations. These medicine mantras incorporate elements of beautiful sound and reflect the ecological, customary, and cultural values of the Malay people. This research aims to unveil the sound patterns and describe the symbolism of the triadic ecological elements, namely nature, nurture, and culture. To achieve this, purposive sampling was employed to select key informants, with Su Usnah, a traditional healer from Bina Karya, Melawi, being a crucial source. Through interviews and field notes, six relevant data sets were extracted from a pool of 15 available medicine mantras for analysis. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research utilized stylistic protocols to categorize the data according to existing sound patterns and employed ecocriticism guidelines to reveal the presence of ecological elements within the Melawi Malay medicine mantras. The primary findings of this research disclose the existence of four sound patterns in these mantras: assonance, alliteration, consonance, and rhyme. The ecocritical perspective reveals that each mantra contains ecological elements, including nature, such as flora and natural elements; nurture, reflecting the relationship between nature and society, and human connections; and culture, as manifested in customary practices. This study deepens our understanding of the sound patterns and ecological elements present in these mantras, with the hope that further research, through exploration of mantras in the Melawi Regency, can contribute to the continuous conservation and promotion of oral literature. Enriching the global understanding of mantras from linguistic, literary, and ecological perspectives is vital in practising traditional medicine in Melawi and other regions in West Kalimantan.
