Abstract

This paper interrogates the way in which Instagram, as one of the most famous micro-blogging participatory online media in the world, creates the production, consumption and articulation of the so-called micro-celebrity. The concept of micro-celebrity has been expanded to unearth the phenomenon of someone who has gained massive online popularity and followers based on their online-persona. Despite its burgeoning prominence, there is a lacuna of research addressing the emergence of micro-celebrities in Indonesia and the way in which Instagram facilitates such trajectories. This paper focuses on Instagram and how this platform helps to build celebrity online persona by examining what and how discourses have been embodied and reproduced by local (Indonesia) micro-celebrities. Using multimodal discourse analysis, this paper concludes that both discourses of authenticity and ordinariness are mostly prevailing in both Dian Pelangi and Arief Muhammad s Instagram accounts. Dian Pelangi and Arief Muhammad s rise to fame through online platform such as Instagram confirmed the digital myth that the Internet is the place of meritocracy where everyone can thrive without acknowledging the structural inequality toward those who lack in access or knowledge in achieving the same level of success.

Abstract

The community service program consists of seminars and training sessions on the production of cocoblock planting media for the PKK (Family Welfare Movement) of Kawedusan Village, Kebumen Regency. This initiative aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of housewives in utilizing backyard land productively and sustainably. The program is driven by the low level of public understanding regarding alternative planting media and the high potential of coconut husk waste that remains underutilized. The training was conducted using a participatory action learning approach, emphasizing active participant involvement through interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in making cocoblock. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' understanding, as evidenced by the comparison of pre-test and post-test results, as well as their skills in independently creating cocoblock planting media. Participant engagement was very high, evident from their enthusiasm during practical sessions and willingness to replicate the training outcomes at their respective homes. The program outputs include training modules, tutorial videos, and cocoblock prototypes that can serve as references for developing similar programs. This program has implications for improving household food security, reducing organic waste, and providing opportunities for economic empowerment based on backyard farming. The results of this activity are the application of simple but effective technologies that have a broad impact when implemented in a participatory and sustainable manner

Abstract

Abstract Nowadays, the spread of news has become increasingly easy with the use of gadgets. However, this also increases the risk of misinformation whether disinformation, which is deliberately misleading, or misinformation, which is spread unintentionally. Kampung Sawah, a Betawi community, is unique for having three places of worship located close to each other. The residents, who follow Islam, Christianity, and Catholicism, have lived in harmony since before Indonesia’s independence. This unity has been maintained over generations due to shared traditions, culture, and language, despite religious differences. Amid the rise of hoaxes on social media, residents of Kampung Sawah including teachers, students, and parents of elementary school students in Jatimurni need to develop the ability to distinguish facts from misinformation and act wisely in preventing its spread. To support this, a training session was conducted, accompanied by educational posters, focusing on identifying hoaxes that could affect the values of harmony and tolerance. These posters play a crucial role in improving digital literacy, helping the community recognize factual information, classify misinformation, and prevent its dissemination. Furthermore, they aim to foster a more thoughtful approach in receiving, managing, and sharing information, ensuring that people are not easily influenced by fake news on social media.

Abstract

Social media is a collection of digital applications that enable users to interact online by sharing information in the form of photos, videos, news, and short stories. This convenience has made the dissemination of information rapid and widespread. However, alongside these advantages come challenges, particularly the use of impolite language that can disrupt communication, both in process and content. In such a context, it is essential to foster awareness of polite language use in social media, especially within communities that embrace diversity. Kampung Sawah, a Betawi community located in Jatimurni Subdistrict, offers a unique example of harmony, where three houses of worship mosque, church, and chapel stand side by side. Residents of different faiths Islam, Christianity, and Catholicism have long maintained familial ties dating back to before Indonesia's independence. This harmony is sustained through shared customs, culture, and language. Therefore, training in polite message writing for social media targeted at residents, teachers, students, and parents of SD (elementary school) in Kampung Sawah is of great significance. The training focused on writing messages that promote tolerance and unity, as well as identifying polite and impolite language forms. The results show an improvement in the ability to write respectfully using strategies such as direct speech, positive and negative politeness, and off-record strategies. With this understanding, community members are better equipped to avoid profanity, curses, and expressions that degrade others, while fostering wisdom and setting a positive example in their digital communication practices.

Abstract

This study examines the culture of the Indonesia Book Party community through the @indobookparty Instagram account using Christine Hine’s virtual ethnography method. Data were collected through virtual observation, in-depth online interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using four levels: media space, media archive, media object, and experiential stories. At the media space level, Instagram is used to share activities and shape identity. Most members use their main accounts, while some use second accounts to maintain privacy, reflecting Wood & Smith’s identity theory. The account is managed to encourage open and equal interaction, in line with Gane & Beer’s interactivity theory. At the media archive level, identity is shown through visuals, emojis, and unique language. At the media object level, interaction is active through feeds, stories, and DMs, with both secondary and circular communication patterns. At the experiential stories level, the community reflects values of openness and togetherness, both online and offline, showing that online culture reflects real-life connections.
