Abstract

Character education is essential, especially for the younger generation. Successful character education can be seen in students’ daily behavior, in how they apply vertical relation to God and horizontal regard to His creatures. To perform an effective character education, various methods and learning media can make students more excited at character values in the learning materials. The story method, mutalaah within the al-Qira’ah al-Rashidah Book 1 by Abdul Fatah Shabri Bik and Ali Amir Bik, includes some stories that contain noble morality. This study showed that character education through the story method has several stages, (1) the preparation of the syllabus and lesson plan, (2) the learning activity that covers opening, teaching-learning process, and closing. The process of planting moral values is carried out when a teacher explains the content and text of the lesson. Meanwhile, a formal evaluation is done in the semester test, besides daily assessment of student’s behavior in pesantren; (3) the story method through the learning mutalaah is considered effective in the development of morals because instinctively students like stories and are encouraged and motivated to practice the moral values in the mutalaah stories; (4) some factors supporting character education through the story method include the support of pesantren and principal, teacher’s linear educational background, and availability of decent infrastructure. On the contrary, the inhibiting factors include students’ diverse educational backgrounds, less motivation to study Arabic vocabulary, and lack of learning media that supports the delivery of learning materials.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) cooperative learning model in enhancing students’ learning motivation in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at SMP Plus Nurul Hidayah Pasundan. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through classroom observation and documentation. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the STAD model fosters a collaborative, democratic, and pedagogically meaningful learning environment. Students demonstrated increased learning motivation, evidenced by active participation, enthusiasm in group discussions, and improved formative assessment outcomes. Theoretically, these results reinforce the principles of positive interdependence and individual accountability within cooperative learning frameworks. Practically, the implementation of STAD facilitates the internalization of Islamic values such as solidarity (ukhuwah), responsibility, and deliberation (mushawarah), while also serving as a relevant pedagogical alternative for character education in the 21st century. This research contributes to the development of contextual and value-based Islamic Religious Education models and positions STAD as a cross-cultural pedagogical strategy that supports the formation of intelligent, critical, and morally grounded Muslim students.

The approach used in this research is qualitative, using library research methods. The data collection technique in this research is collecting from the sources mentioned, classifying the data, and continuing with the conclusion. The data analysis technique uses descriptive analysis. The results of this research show that there are several strategies for developing the Islamic religious education curriculum in building national character and insight, including Discovery Learning (DL), Inquiry Learning (IL), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project Based Learning (PJBL), and Scientific Learning (SL). So, there is a second alternative to carrying out this learning by using learning methods that focus on how students work in understanding, analyzing, and practicing. The implication of this research is that curriculum development and students' national attitudes is the foundation for the learning process using contemporary methods.
