Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the teacher’s questioning strategy in teaching English at SMP Muhammadiyah Limbung and to find out the improvement of students’ motivation in learning English through the teacher’s questioning strategy. This research used the qualitative method. This study consisted of 10 subjects: 2 teachers and 8 students. Data were collected through observation and interviews. The results of the data analysis show that teachers use questioning strategies by applying two types of questioning strategies and using two types of questions in each teaching meeting. The use of probing question strategy which belongs to the display question type, and divergent question strategy which belongs to the referential question type, in asking questions is dominant. This depends on the material the teacher is presenting to the students. The findings of this study also show a positive impact on students’ learning motivation on the use of questioning strategies teachers apply in English learning activities in the classroom. Keywords: English Teacher Questions, Questions Strategies, and Students’ Motivation

Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to explore students' reflective journals using the DIEP model in micro-teaching classes. The author tried to investigate whether writing learning outcomes using the DIEP model reflection journal could provide a new way of understanding students' learning outcomes. In this research, the author conducted semi-structured interviews. The subjects of this study were 10 5th semester students in the micro teaching class. The stages in obtaining data began with writing learning outcomes in the reflective journal using the DIEP model, then an interview session was conducted to obtain more accurate data. The results of this study indicate that writing learning outcomes using the DIEP model reflective journal can have a positive impact on the memory of learning outcomes, as well as developing thinking skills. This can be proven from the results of interviews conducted directly, students felt a significant difference between writing learning outcomes in the DIEP model reflection journal and the way they remembered previous learning outcomes. This means that the use of the DIEP model reflection journal can be one of the media used to store a longer memory of learning outcomes.

Abstract

Meaning, spelling, pronunciation, word classes, and word use are the five main focus areas of this study as it explores how students might use the Duocards application to increase their vocabulary mastery. Fourteen eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri SATAP Sering in Soppeng, South Sulawesi, selected by cluster random sampling, participated in this study using a pre-experimental design. To collect data, vocabulary tests were given as pretests and posttests. SPSS 26 was then used for analysis. The average pretest score increased from 37.71 to 73.78 in the posttest, indicating a considerable improvement in the students’ vocabulary competence, according to the data. Furthermore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted because the two-tailed significance value was 0.000, less than 0.005. These findings suggest that the Duocards application has improved the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This pre-experimental study evaluated (1) the impact of ClassPoint, an interactive learning media on students' English learning motivation and (2) found the main components of motivation that were significantly affected by the use of ClassPoint. A scaled test conducted with a questionnaire was used to collect data. Questionnaires were distributed to students of class VIII.A UPT SPF SMPN 40 Makassar to find out students' English learning motivation before and after treatment.  Total of 34 students of class VIII.A were sampled in this study. The results of descriptive statistics showed that the average score of students' motivations increased significantly from 31.41 in the pre-test to 54.94 in the post-test. The t-test results showed (1) a significant difference in student motivation (Y) before and after using ClassPoint (X), with a significance value of 0.000. In addition, the N-Gain value of 1.51 indicates a substantial increase in student motivation, which places it in the high classification category. (2) learning goals were the most influential indicator, with an increase of 99%. This finding showed that ClassPoint is highly effective in increasing student motivation, especially in terms of learning goals. These results reinforce the theoretical support for the constructivist learning theory, showing that interactive media like ClassPoint significantly enhance student motivation, while also offering practical implications for educators to adopt this technology to achieve more effective learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to assess how teacher’s perception the utilization of English-Indonesian code-switching at SMP Unggulan Darussalam Barandasi. There 1 English teacher participated in this study. This study is a qualitative descriptive study that uses observation and interviews as data collection techniques. This study uses two theories, namely, linguistic theory and sociolinguistic theory. Based on the findings, the data shows that there are 3 stages in finding the effectiveness of language use during the learning process, namely: language use (context of use, type of code switching, purpose, strategy), effectiveness of using code switching (contextual appropriateness, skill level, learning evaluation) and students understanding (conceptual understanding, ability to identify and strategy) and there is a comparison of teachers. The teacher considers it an effective teaching strategy to bridge the gap in understanding, especially for beginner students. Teachers agree that the use of code-switching must be done in a balanced way so as not to reduce the quality of English exposure.

Abstract

In the world of education, of course, we are no strangers to the problem-based learning method, where learning should be student-centered, which was initially oriented to a problem related to the topic of learning. The author intends to implement the PBL method in the news item text learning process at MAN Lamandau, particularly in class XII. This study seeks to understand its application, the students' comprehension of the material, and their involvement in the news item text learning process. The author used data from his field experience practice at MAN Lamandau, specifically in class XII, for the discussion. The author carried out the learning process himself using the PBL method with the text topics mentioned above. Later, the author will use a qualitative method in the form of a narrative to convey the results. Despite several challenges in the implementation process, including the absence of an interactive discussion process due to students' passive tendencies and external factors that disrupt the learning process, the PBL method's application generally piques students' interest and motivation in the news item text learning process, as they typically receive only lectures.
