Abstract

The Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Lampung plays a vital role in religious education ‎and character building within the community. The leadership of the kiai in the pesantren is ‎not limited to the spiritual aspect, but also affects the social welfare of the surrounding ‎community. Therefore, it is important to explore the application of utilitarianism principles in ‎the kiai's leadership to improve the well-being of the community. This study aims to analyze ‎the role of kiai leadership in NU pesantren in Lampung and how the principles of ‎utilitarianism are applied in their leadership. The research method used is a qualitative ‎approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ‎kiais, pesantren administrators, and santri, as well as observations of the kiai's leadership ‎practices in the pesantren. The results show that the application of utilitarianism principles ‎in kiai leadership has proven to provide greater social benefits, both in education, economic ‎empowerment, and social policies that prioritize the common welfare. This study concludes ‎that kiai leadership based on utilitarianism principles can create a positive impact on the ‎pesantren community and its surroundings. Furthermore, these findings contribute to the ‎development of a leadership model based on social values and the well-being of the ‎community, which can be applied in other pesantren across Indonesia‎.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the implementation of Tartil method as an alternative to eliminate Alquran illiteracy among elementary school students. The study was conducted through two phases of explanatory mixed methods designs. Quantitative method was applied in the first phase (true experiment; pretest-post test one group design) involving 78 pupils of two schools who were Qur’an illiterate. Qualitative method was applied in the last phase (multi case-multi site case study design) involving 13 pupils and 2 teachers who implemented the method in their classroom. Data of the first phase was collected through oral test analyzed through descriptive statistics of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) Windows 18.0. Further, the second phase data was collected through in depth interview thematically analyzed by Nvivo 8. The findings of the study indicate the improvement of students’ ability in reading Qur’an after Tartil method was implemented (57.57% Good & 42.43 % Moderate). Data of the second phase implies that the success of the method is pursuant to four prominent factors, namely; (i) the method is truly enjoyable, understandable, simple and practical, (ii) the materials are systematically and precisely presented, (iii) the materials are easy to remember as they are colorful, (iv) it is possible to teach the students how to read Qur’an in murotal way through this method.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to carry out a systematic review of the research works that have analyzed bullying in gifted and talented children. The search was conducted in psychology and education databases (Scopus), considering works from the past 14 years (2009-2022). The research method used is the systematic literature review (SLR) method; the data is analyzed qualitatively, referring to the Milles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and data validation. The search string in this study is "bullying," AND "gifted," OR "talented," OR "children." The articles that have been selected are then mapped and codified with Nvivo 12 Pro. The results showed that gifted and talented children in early childhood institutions are more likely to be victims of bullying by their peers due to their unique characteristics and superior cognitive functions. Bullying behavior commonly experienced by gifted children takes the form of insults referring to their intelligence, comments about their appearance, or academic qualifications. Therefore, teachers play an essential role in creating a positive environment, rewarding high academic achievement, and conducting early identification. This study highlights the educational stakeholders' need to provide training or specific actions to the managers of early childhood institutions related to the prevention of bullying in gifted and talented children.

Abstract

This study was motivated by issues surrounding the understanding of self-compassion as an essential psychological resource for female inmates in dealing with pressure, stigma, and life limitations in correctional facilities. Self-compassion, which includes self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, plays a crucial role in reducing depression and anxiety while enhancing mental well-being. However, its application among female inmates remains limited due to traumatic experiences and high social pressure. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how self-compassion is understood and developed among female inmates at the Class II A Correctional Facility in Bandar Lampung. This qualitative research employed a Single Holistic Case Design involving three female inmates as primary informants and five significant others (four inmates and one staff member) selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed thematically using NVivo 12 Plus software. The results reveal that self-compassion develops through spiritual activities, self-reflection, and social support despite severe psychological distress. The findings highlight the role of spirituality and social bonds in fostering psychological resilience. This study contributes to the scientific understanding of self-compassion in correctional contexts and provides implications for developing context-based rehabilitation programs for female inmates.
