Abstract

This study aims to examine how interpersonal meaning in Arabic command speech is realized in the film Farha (2021) and how it is transferred into Indonesian subtitles. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research draws on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and directive speech act theory to analyze 117 command clauses taken from the film and its official subtitles. Each clause was examined through the interpersonal categories of mood, obligation, polarity, person, and tenor to assess the strength and equivalence of illocutionary force across languages. The findings indicate a predominant use of imperative mood, high obligation, positive polarity, and second-person forms, reflecting direct and hierarchical communication typical of conflict settings. Overall, the Indonesian subtitles maintain the core interpersonal force of the Arabic source text, though some shifts occur in obligation intensity, command merging, and lexical choices. This study contributes a systematic model for evaluating interpersonal equivalence in Arabic–Indonesian audiovisual translation.

Abstract

The study of subtitle translation in religious animated films has become increasingly significant as it requires not only linguistic equivalence but also the ability to construct pragmatic meaning through the integration of multiple communicative modes. The episode “Bahaya Pamer” from the animation Muhsin and Mahasin serves as an interesting object of analysis because it conveys Islamic moral values of modesty through verbal and visual interactions rich in educational messages. This research analyzes the Arabic–Indonesian subtitle translation strategies and the role of multimodality in constructing pragmatic meaning and supporting the delivery of moral messages. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis, the study examines eight dialogue segments containing speech acts and multimodal elements encompassing visual, auditory, and gestural dimensions. Drawing upon Speech Act Theory (Searle, 1979), Multimodal Discourse Analysis (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), and the audiovisual translation strategies model (Díaz Cintas & Remael, 2021), the findings reveal that literal transfer, adaptation, and expansion are dominant strategies used to adjust emotional and cultural contexts of the target audience. The coherence among modes reinforces pragmatic meaning and highlights the relationship between language, moral values, and visual context.

Abstract

Readability research has largely focused on prose-based texts, leaving translated nazam materials in Arabic language pedagogy underexplored. This study investigates the readability of the Indonesian translation module of Tafsīriyah Muqaddimah Jazariyah by Abu Ezra al-Fadhli within the framework of Arabic language pedagogy. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, three discourse samples from the beginning, middle, and end sections of the module were analyzed through the Gunning Fog Index as a heuristic tool to assess linguistic load based on sentence length and lexical density. The results show an average Fog Index score of 6.08, indicating that the module is generally categorized as easy to read, although variations in readability appear across sections. The findings demonstrate that sentence structure plays a more significant role in pedagogical accessibility than lexical complexity alone. This study highlights the need to interpret readability formulas critically when applied to translated nazam texts and contributes to a genre-sensitive understanding of readability in Arabic instructional materials.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of interactive metadiscourse in Arabic research article abstracts, with particular attention to rhetorical differences between native Arab writers and non-native Indonesian writers. Metadiscourse in abstracts is crucial, as it shapes textual clarity, coherence, and the perceived credibility of scholarly work. Drawing on Hyland’s framework of interactive metadiscourse, this study analyzed forty Arabic research article abstracts, consisting of twenty abstracts written by native Arab authors and twenty by non-native Indonesian authors. The data were coded using a structured codebook and quantitatively analyzed to examine the distribution of interactive metadiscourse categories across both groups. The findings reveal significant rhetorical differences. Non-native writers tend to employ interactive metadiscourse more explicitly to signal research purposes, stages, and logical relations, while native writers rely more heavily on implicit cohesion, reflecting established Arabic rhetorical conventions. These patterns indicate that cultural and academic backgrounds play an important role in shaping abstract writing practices. By situating these findings within the perspective of contrastive rhetoric, this study extends existing metadiscourse research and provides pedagogical implications for improving kitābah instruction for non-native learners of Arabic.

Abstract

This study analyzes exclamatory constructions in Sundanese folktales (narrative genre), 9,005 tokens from 30 texts through corpus-driven and functional-typological frameworks. Findings reveal that directive particles (hayu), intensifiers (pisan, teuing), and interjections (duh, yeuh)—not generic emotional terms—dominate exclamatory usage, reflecting communal pragmatics. The particle hayu (7 instances), as in “Hayu urang buru embe!” (“Let’s chase the goat!”), merges mobilization with collective urgency through syntactic patterns: direct action, metaphorical appeals (“paganteng-ganteng tunangan!” = “most handsome fiancés!”), and elliptical structures. Intensifiers like pisan (29 instances) amplify affective states (“Haus pisan!” = “So thirsty!”), while reduplication (alus-alus teuing = “so beautiful!”) heightens emotive emphasis. Interjections (duh, yeuh) anchor climactic moments through performative incompleteness (“Duh, Gusti...” = “Oh, God…”). Hybrid interrogative-exclamatives (“Naha anjeun teu éra...?!” = “How dare you?!”) and imperative-exclamatives (“Kudu make akal!” = “Use your brain!”) blur grammatical boundaries, prioritizing cultural intent over syntax. These constructions challenge Eurocentric mood models, instead encoding communal ethics, moral critique, and oral tradition aesthetics. The study underscores exclamatives as cultural-linguistic acts vital to sustaining Sundanese narrative identity, advocating context-sensitive approaches in indigenous language pedagogy and folklore preservation.

Abstract

This study analyzes translation strategies for Arabic culture-specific items (CSI) in Arabic language audiovisual content on the Instagram account @senmancung. The primary data consist of 12 videos selected from a total of 439 uploads through purposive sampling, based on the presence of cultural vocabulary that was manually translated by the creator (human translation). The secondary data include journals, books, and publications related to Aixelá’s (1996) CSI theory and Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques. The data were examined using a content analysis approach, which involved several steps: identifying cultural vocabulary, classifying CSI types according to Aixelá (1996), and determining translation techniques based on the framework of Molina & Albir (2002). The findings reveal five cultural translation strategies, comprising two forms of conservation (intratextual gloss and linguistic/non-cultural translation) and three forms of substitution (limited universalization, synonymy, and naturalization). The most dominant technique is substitution, particularly limited universalization, which is used to adapt Arabic cultural vocabulary so that Indonesian audiences more easily understand it. These results demonstrate that translation in digital media is not merely a linguistic activity but also a process of cultural negotiation to ensure the acceptability of messages across languages.

Abstract

Arabic-language podcasts can play a significant role in shaping netizens’ perceptions of social norms, including language's role as a tool of communication, as they serve as a primary source of knowledge and cultural values. This study seeks to fill this gap by applying Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis to an Arabic podcast. The analysis employs a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach drawing on Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional framework: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. Data were collected from public comments on social media platforms and analyzed to identify linguistic patterns, discourse strategies, and the construction of ideology and cultural identity. By examining the podcast channel comment section, the findings highlight the importance of advancing critical sociolinguistic studies in the digital sphere, particularly within the context of Indonesia–Arab interactions, and open opportunities for broader research across other online platforms and communities
