Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of adding tannins to silage feed on the performance of male dairy goats. The benefits of this research are that it is useful for application to other ruminant livestock for obtaining preserved feed but with nutritional qualities that can still be maintained. The research consisted of 2 treatments. Each treatment consisted of 4 male Etawa crossbred goats (ECG) as well as replications. Treatment T0 was used for the group of goats fed complete silage without the addition of tannins, while T1 was used for the group of goats fed complete silage with the addition of tannins. The parameters observed for production performance were consumption (DM, CP, TDN), daily weight gain (DWG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR). The parameters observed for rumen metabolism were rumen fluid pH, partial VFA, and ammonia (NH3). The data obtained were explained nonparametrically using the Mann?Whitney test by IBM SPSS Statistics 24. The results showed that complete silage feed supplemented with tannin (9 g/kg fresh feed) contained more crude protein than that without tannin. The effect on the production performance of male Etawa crossbred goats (ECG) was better for DWG, namely, 87.0 g/head/day, than for those without additional tannins, namely, only 53.3 g/head/day. Providing tannin to complete silage feed also improved the C2:C3 ratio in the rumen metabolic system, as indicated by an increase in the efficiency of energy use, which is beneficial for the growth phase of livestock.

Abstract

The primary goal of this research is to identify and evaluate the most suitable thin-layer drying model to effectively interpret the drying characteristics of banana chips and determine moisture diffusivity at different drying temperatures. The study utilized physiologically mature “kapok” bananas from the local market in Jember Regency. A flash dryer with a 4000-watt electric heating system was used, equipped with a blower for air circulation, an exhaust fan to expel water vapor. The bananas were processed into chips with a thickness of 1 mm. A total of 2000 g of banana chips were dried at constant temperature according to treatment conditions (air velocity 3.2 m/s, drying at temperatures of 60, 70, and 80°C). The study found that higher drying temperatures (80°C) achieved the highest initial drying rate (35.9% in 30 min) compared to 60°C (28.0%) and 70°C (22.0%). However, the drying rate gradually decreased at all temperatures. The drying kinetics of banana chips at 60, 70, and 80°C aligned well with the modified Midilli model. Effective moisture diffusivity values for banana chips at 60, 70, and 80°C were 4.947E-9 m²/s, 5.165(10–9) m²/s, and 5.756(10–9) m²/s, respectively, indicating that drying at 80°C was the most effective. The effective moisture diffusivity value showed a strong correlation with air velocity, drying temperature, material thickness, RH, and specific material attributes. Keywords: Banana, Diffusivity, Drying, Thin layer drying, Modified Midilli Model.

Abstract

The maru fish, Channa marulioides, is one of the native fish species of Indonesia that inhabits the Kapuas River in West Kalimantan. In addition to being consumed by local people, maru fish also has an export market as an ornamental fish. The market demand for maru fish is still met from wild catches. Excessive exploitation and a lack of environmental carrying capacity will increasingly threaten the existence of the maru fish in the wild. The continuous population decline can lead to the extinction of fish species. Therefore, before extinction, domestication needs to be carried out through cultivation activities. Currently, the alternative feed commonly used in the maintenance of maru fish seeds is dry maggots. However, maggots have not been optimally used as the main feed. This study aims to evaluate the substitution of dry maggots with commercial pellets in maru fish seeds as an initial domestication effort. Maru fish seed maintenance was carried out for 90 days. The seeds come from natural catches in the Kapuas River, West Kalimantan. The study was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The treatment in this study was a combination of dry maggots and pellets. Treatment M100 (100 % dry maggot), Treatment M75P25 (75 % dry maggot + 25 % pellets), Treatment M50P50 (50 % dry maggot + 50 % pellets) and Treatment M25P75 (25 % dry maggot + 75 % pellets). Each treatment was repeated three times. The results showed that seeds maintained with 50 % dry maggot + 50 % pellet feed had the lowest final growth, final growth rate, feed efficiency and FCR compared to other treatments.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the transformation process from conventional to digital invitations and the public perception of this change. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants in this study consist of the residents of Tanjung Gusta Village, invitation printing business owners, and teachers in the village. The research was conducted in Tanjung Gusta Village, Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency. The findings indicate that the transformation from conventional to digital invitations is influenced by several factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic, lower costs and more varied designs of digital invitations, the increasing use of smartphones and communication services, and innovations in technology utilization. Furthermore, public perceptions of this transformation vary. Digital invitations are perceived as more economical, practical, and easier to distribute, yet they also present challenges such as fraud risks, difficulties for traditional printing businesses, and reliance on internet access. Meanwhile, conventional invitations are considered more ethical and capable of strengthening social bonds but are seen as less practical due to longer production times and higher costs compared to digital invitations. The data were analyzed qualitatively based on facts obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. Thus, this transformation requires society to adapt to technological advancements in social and cultural aspects.

Abstract

Energy shortages remain a major challenge for remote communities, impacting sustainable economic development. Micro-hydropower plants (PLTMH) utilizing flowing water resources offer an efficient and cost-effective renewable energy solution, especially for small-scale electricity needs (<100 kW). a community-based service research project in Bedadung Village, Jember Regency, examined the application of Archimedes screw turbines in PLTMH with variations in the immersion levels of the waterwheel (0.5 and 0.75 of the wheel diameter) and measurements taken at different time intervals. Simulation results showed that a waterwheel immersion of ¾ below the water surface produced an average rotation of 476.27 rpm and a voltage of 12.75 V, which was more optimal for meeting the electricity needs of the local community, particularly in tourist locations and commercial areas. A participatory approach and learning-by-doing methods enhanced community understanding of local resource potential while sustainably building energy and economic self-reliance. This study emphasizes the importance of turbine design adjustments and water resource management for the technical and ecological sustainability of PLTMH in remote areas.
