Abstract

Code-switching, the practice of alternating between languages in communication, is a common feature of multilingual English classrooms. This article examines students’ perceptions of teachers’ code-switching in an Indonesian high school English class and explores the teacher’s reasons for utilizing this practice. Drawing on a descriptive qualitative study at SMAN 1 Takalar with classroom observations and interviews of one teacher and five Grade 10 students, the findings indicate that students generally perceive code-switching positively. They report that the teacher’s strategic switches from English to Indonesian enhance their comprehension of complex material, reduce anxiety, and encourage participation. The teacher employs code-switching intentionally to clarify difficult vocabulary, explain abstract concepts, manage classroom interactions, and ensure inclusive understanding for students of diverse linguistic backgrounds. While both students and the teacher acknowledge the pedagogical benefits of code-switching, they also recognize the importance of not over-relying on the first language so as not to impede English immersion. A balanced, judicious use of code-switching is recommended. These findings underscore the pedagogical value of code-switching as a scaffolding tool in EFL classrooms and highlight the need to consider student perspectives in developing effective bilingual teaching strategies.

Abstract

This quantitative study aims to explore the effectiveness of peer learning activities in improving students’ English vocabulary. The research employed a pre-experimental design involving one group pretest-posttest, with participants consisting of 25 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Parangloe. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the peer learning intervention. The findings indicate a notable improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery. Pretest results showed that 68% of students were in the "Poor" category, with no students achieving "Good" or "Very Good" scores. After the intervention, 40% of students reached the "Good" and "Very Good" categories, while those in the "Poor" range dropped to 32%. The mean score increased from 63.20 to 77.40, with consistent standard deviation and low standard error, indicating reliable results. The N-Gain score of 0.38 classified the vocabulary improvement as "Average." Furthermore, the paired sample t-test yielded a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H₁). In conclusion, peer learning activities have a statistically significant and positive effect on enhancing students’ English vocabulary skills, although some students may still require additional support for further improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the barriers faced by Indonesian secondary education students in learning English through online platforms during the COVID-19 outbreak. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with five students from SMA Negeri 13 Makassar using a snowball sampling technique. The findings reveal seven key barriers: lack of clear instruction and limited teacher engagement, excessive assignment loads with minimal explanation, limited digital literacy among students and teachers, unstable internet connectivity, poor communication and delayed teacher responses, low student motivation, including psychological and emotional challenges, and an unsupportive home learning environment. These interrelated barriers significantly hindered students' ability to engage meaningfully in online English learning. The study highlights the importance of clear instructional design, digital competence, consistent communication, and supportive learning environments in ensuring effective online education. The findings are expected to inform future educational strategies and policies for more equitable and accessible English language learning, especially during times of crisis.

Abstract

This study investigates secondary school students’ responses to the integration of YouTube Shorts and Microsoft Copilot AI in English grammar learning, assessed through the CRAAP (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose) model. Motivated by students’ declining interest in grammar and the limitations of traditional instructional methods, this research explores the pedagogical potential of combining short-form educational videos with AI-driven chatbots. Utilizing a quantitative descriptive approach, a CRAAP-based questionnaire was administered to a purposively selected Grade VIII class at UPT SMPN 33 Makassar following an AI-enhanced grammar learning intervention focusing on parts of speech and tenses. Results from 29 respondents revealed highly positive perceptions across all five CRAAP dimensions, with every statement receiving a “Strongly Agree” rating above 75%. Currency and Relevance emerged as the most endorsed aspects, while Authority and Purpose, though still positively rated, suggested the need for clearer source attribution. The findings indicate that the YouTube Shorts–Microsoft Copilot AI collaboration not only effectively supports grammar comprehension but also aligns with students’ digital preferences and fosters learner autonomy. This study affirms the value of integrating multimedia and AI in language education and encourages future efforts to enhance credibility, transparency, and long-term engagement with such tools. Keywords: English grammar learning, student responses, CRAAP model, AI, short video social media, YouTube Shorts, Microsoft Copilot AI.

Abstract

Mortuary facilities generate wastewater with elevated concentrations of organic matter, suspended solids, oils and grease, ammonia, and microbial contaminants, necessitating effective treatment to mitigate environmental and public health risks. This study evaluates the performance of an anaerobic–aerobic biofilter wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) serving a mortuary facility in Makassar City. Wastewater samples were collected at the influent and effluent points of the system during July and August 2025 and analyzed for BOD₅, COD, TSS, oil and grease, NH₃–N, and total coliforms. The influent wastewater exhibited high pollutant loads (e.g., BOD₅: 58.1–58.4 mg/L; COD: 139.50–140.33 mg/L; TSS: 63.2–64.9 mg/L; NH₃–N: 13.42–13.94 mg/L; coliforms: 9532–9541 CFU/100 mL). Treatment by the biofilter consistently reduced these contaminants, producing effluent concentrations within applicable national standards. Removal efficiencies in July ranged from 45.56–67.81%, while efficiencies in August ranged from 52.11–70.03% for physicochemical parameters. Microbial removal was also effective, achieving 75.55% and 77.58% reduction in July and August, respectively. These findings demonstrate that the anaerobic–aerobic biofilter performs reliably under routine operating conditions, effectively reducing organic pollutants, suspended solids, oils and grease, ammonia, and total coliforms in mortuary wastewater. The system provides compliant effluent quality without additional treatment stages, indicating its suitability for managing medium-strength, high-organic-load wastewater generated by mortuary activities.
