Abstract

This research aimed to find out the strategy used by the English teacher in actualizing multiple intelligence in teaching and the ways of the English teacher uses the strategy in actualizing multiple intelligence in teaching. This research applied the descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected from interviews using Zoom meetings and documentation of the English teacher’s lesson plans. The data was taken from the teacher at Bosowa School Makassar. The result of this research showed that the English teacher at Bosowa School Makassar applied almost all of the multiple intelligence in his teaching strategies, excluding musical intelligence. These strategies are (1) linguistic intelligence; regulation to speak English, debate, and write a personal letter, (2) logical-mathematical intelligence; English riddle games, (3) spatial intelligence; caption material and hot seating game, (4) bodily-kinesthetic intelligence; treasure hunting game, (5) interpersonal intelligence; make dialog, (6) intrapersonal intelligence; daily journal, and (7) naturalist intelligence; field trip. The English teacher distinguished the way he used strategy in actualizing multiple intelligence to encourage and motivate students to enhance their skills in learning.  It can be concluded that using various strategies in actualizing multiple intelligence in teaching can encourage and motivate students to enhance their skills in learning.

Abstract

Masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana mengembangkan perangkat pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis pendidikan karakter yang diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa dengan mengintegrasikan nilai- nilai karakter yang terdapat dalam budaya lokal yang mengandung pesan nilai moral untuk meningkatkan kualitas karakter dan moral siswa SMP di Kabupaten Gowa. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian pengembangan yang bertujuan untuk mengembangkan model pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris berbasis pendidikan karakter siswa SMP di Kabupaten Gowa Sulawesi Selatan. Pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran yang direncanakan akan mengikuti model desain penelitian dan pengembangan yang dirancang oleh Thiagarajan dalam pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran model Four-D terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu pendefinisian (define), perancangan (design), pengembangan (develop), dan penyebaran (disseminate). Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa SMP di Kabupaten Gowa Sulawesi Selatan. Sampel penelitian direncanakan adalah siswa SMP yang menurut data dan informasi Dinas Pendidikan ditemukan telah terlibat dalam tawuran antar siswa di Sulawesi Selatan. Penelitian direncanakan berlangsung selama satu tahun. Produk yang dihasilkan pada berbentuk prototipe bahan ajar keterampilan berbahasa Inggris secara integratif dan perangkat pembelajaran pendukungnya Pada bagian akhir kegiatan penelitian adalah pengemasan dan penyebarluasan model produk yang dihasilkan. Penyebarluasan dilakukan melalui forum ilmiah, kelompok diskusi terfokus, dan publikasi di jurnal Internasional. Kata Kunci: Pendidikan Karakter, Perangkat Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the use of Zoom Meeting in learning English speaking and to find out students' perceptions of Zoom Meeting in learning English speaking. The researcher applies qualitative descriptive methods. The datum of this research collected through questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this study are the lecturer who teaches Interactive Speaking, and 30 students from the Department of English Education, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar for the 2021/2022 academic year. The results of data analysis found that (1) the use of the Zoom Meeting application, especially for its features, is able to help the lecturer and the students in the teaching and learning process in English speaking and has a positive impact on users, namely in terms of benefits (Perceived Usefulness), ease (Perceive Ease Of Use), and attitude (Attitude Toward Using) (2) students explanations in interviews regarding the perception of using Zoom Meeting in speaking English that Zoom Meeting is a good online learning tool because it has features that support English speaking learning during a pandemic. Despite the pandemic, students can still learn to speak English because in Zoom Meetings students and the lecturer can still interact and discuss well. From the two results of the two research statements above, it can be concluded that the use of Zoom Meeting in learning English speaking provides convenience in the teaching and learning process and also has a positive impact, especially on students' English speaking ability.Keywords— Zoom Meeting, English Speaking, Students’ Perception

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine whether or not using herringbone technique increased students' reading comprehension. The pre-experimental design technique was employed in this study. The population in this study was Grade 9 students of SMP Telkom Makassar 2022/2023 academic year. Twenty nine (29) students were selected as samples of the study using cluster random sampling technique.  The results of statistical analysis at the level of significant (a) 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) = 28 and a p value (sig.2- tailed ) of 0.000 showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results of the students exams. In other words, the results of the sig.2 tailed of the students post test were greater than the level of significance (0.000<0.05. It can be concluded that the use of Herringbone techniques could improve the EFL students’ reading comprehension. Keywords— implementation, herringbone techniques, improving, reading comprehension

Abstract

This study aims to find out (1) the kinds of reinforcement that the teacher uses toward students’ English learning motivation and (2) how the teacher’s reinforcement impact toward students’ English learning motivation. The subject of this study consists of six students of XI IPA 2 MAN 1 Kolaka. They were recruited using cluster random sampling. The results of this study indicate that (1) the teacher and students interact well in the teaching and learning process with the existence of verbal and non-verbal reinforcement; (2) the teacher reinforcement in the form of giving additional points, responding with facial mimics, motivation and sentences of praises has a positive impact toward students’ English learning motivation. In conclusion, the kinds of reinforcement teachers use toward students’ English learning motivation are verbal reinforcement and non-verbal reinforcement and there are four ways teacher’s reinforcement impacts students’ English learning motivation, those are giving additional points, responding with facial mimics, giving sentences of praise and giving motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to discover students' group work learning performance in offline learning. This research is a qualitative study using a descriptive qualitative method in collecting data which aims to explore the students' performance in group work during offline learning. The participants of this study were the students in grade XI MIPA 2 and one English teacher of SMAN 1 Pangkep. The instrument used in this study was an observation, with an observation checklist as the tool. The research found that based on the observation tool, the observation checklist, most of the students fulfilled the criteria, making their group work perform properly. There were six items with which most of the groups met with them. However, several items were not in group six’s performance. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students had an adequate performance in group work based on the criteria of the observation. The students of SMAN 1 Pangkep are enthusiastic when working together to complete their tasks. They shared their roles and responsibilities with group members and encouraged each other to improve their communication skills and confidence.

Abstract

This research is pre-experimental in one-group-pretest-postest design that aimed to find out whether or not the implementation of role models improved the students' descriptive writing skills in SMKN 1 KAB. Wajo and students’ interest. The sample of this research is 23 students of a class at the ten grade students in SMKN 1 KAB. WAJO in academic year 2021/2022. To get data, the researcher gives a pre-test before the treatment. The treatment that has been given to students is to explain material regarding descriptive text in 4 meetings, the researcher explains the components of writing, explains what role models are, and several types of role models. Thus treatment result can be known to be more accurate because it can compare the condition before given the treatment. After that, the data are analysed using SPSS 25.0. The result showed that the students descriptive writing text for X AKL students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo before applying the treatment (pre-test) are categorized as very poor with an mean score of 76,96. Meanwhile, the results of students descriptive writing test for class X students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo after applying the Treatment (post-test) were categorized as quite good with an mean score of 85,61. Moreover, the results of students interest for X AKL students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo before applying the treatment (pre-test) are categorized as very poor with an mean score of 70,65. Meanwhile, the results of students descriptive writing test for class X students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo after applying the Treatment (post-test) were categorized as quite good with an mean score of 84,74. It can be proven by the hypothesis value was lower than P (0.000 ˂ 0.05) which means (H1) was accepted. Therefore, it is concluded that role models improve the writing skill of the eleventh-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo. Keywords— role model, descriptive text, writing skill

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether using pictures improves students' vocabulary mastery. Using research method pre-experimental research design conducted with a sample of 27 class VII.A students using a purposive sampling technique. Researcher used pretest and posttest to collect data. The results of data analysis show that by using pictures improved students' vocabulary mastery, even though the improvement in students’ vocabulary was a slight improvement. This is evidenced by the students' mean score before treatment (48.00 points), lower than the mean score after treatment (71.62 points). Because this study's significance value  (0.000) is less than  its significance value (0.05), H0 in this study is rejected, whereas Ha is accepted.. So it can be concluded that using pictures can improve the vocabulary mastery of class VII.A students at SMP Negeri 3 Marioriawa.Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Picture

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the students’ perception of teacher oral corrective feedback used in the classroom. The method of the research was a descriptive qualitative method. The participants of the study were first-year students of the English Language Education Department, Universitas Negeri Makassar in the academic year 2022/2023. Seven students were selected as the participants using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research was an interview. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data collected in the interview transcript. Overall, the students have both positive and negative perceptions of oral corrective feedback. The students revealed that they believe oral corrective feedback is needed in their learning performances as it 1) helps the learning progress 2) makes the students aware of the error 3) makes the students feel motivated and appreciated. In contrast, the negative perceptions found from oral corrective feedback are 1) feeling anxious and disappointed 2) reducing self-esteem 3) labelling. Even though students’ perceptions varied, they all accepted every feedback needed for their performances. Lastly, they expected to receive oral corrective feedback with some encouragement and appreciation. Thus, it is concluded the students generally have a positive perception with some notes on teacher oral corrective feedback.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss and discover how students feel about using weekly quizzes in an EFL classroom. This research used mixed methods (QUAL-Quan). The population of in this study was the 3rd year students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Cluster random sampling was used to choose the 45 students for this study. The research used observation, interview, and a questionnaire as instruments. As a result, the students' perceptions of the utilization of weekly quizzes reflect this research. The result of the research showed that the students showed that students' perception of using weekly quizzes in EFL classroom in a positive category. According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that the use of weekly quizzes in EFL classroom can be a tool to determine and measure students' understanding of the material that has been taught previously.
