Abstract

Pelatihan ini bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan dan pemahaman secara teoritis dan praktis kepada mahasiswa program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris, Pascasarjana UNM yang memogramkan matakuliah Educational Psychology semester 1 tahun akademik 2022/2023 mengenai penulisan telaah kritis. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, diskusi, konsultasi, dan presentasi tugas akhir. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa para peserta secara kualitatif mampu memeroleh pengetahuan dan pemahaman yang komprehensif mengenai konsep-konsep penulisan telaah kritis dan mampu menghasilkan sebuah telaah kritis mengenai kajian Psikolinguistik dalam perspektif bahasa Inggris, dan mereka secara kuantitaif mampu menghasilkan sebuah telaah kritis (90 %) dengan eksistensi kekurangan pada bagian-bagian tertentu khususnya kritik dan selebihnya (10 %) mahasiswa secara individu yang tergabung dalam beberapa kelompok masih mengalami kendala memahami konsep-konsep dasar tersebut.

Abstract

Program studi vokasi di jenjang perguruan tinggi merupakan program studi yang lulusannya disiapkan untuk menjadi tenaga kerja siap pakai. Pada perekrutan tenaga kerja pada instansi swasta maupun negeri salah satu persyaratan utama adalah melampirkan sertifikat kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan penelusuran tim pengabdi mahasiswa semester V BEC FBS UNM belum pernah mengikuti pelatihan TOEIC® sebelumnya bahkan beberapa mahasiswa hanya pernah mendengar istilah tersebut namun tidak tahu apa itu TOEIC®. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut maka tim pengabdi menganggap bahwa pelaksanaan pelatihan TOEIC® bagi mahasiswa Business English Communication merupakan hal yang dibutuhkan. Terdapat 3 tahapan pelaksanaan pada kegiatan ini yaitu pengenalan, pelatihan, dan demonstrasi. Hasil Pkm ini memperlihatkan bahwa mitra memperoleh pengetahuan mengenai tes TOEIC® dan cara mengerjakannya secara umum. Mereka menunjukkan sikap positif dan aktif berkontribusi selama kegiatan.

Abstract

This socialization activity aims to provide knowledge and understanding for health students and health workers on the opportunities and challenges of working abroad and open their horizons about the preparation needed to work in overseas hospitals. In this activity, the lecturers gave presentations and discussed various things that are required if you want to work abroad, including qualifications, requirements, experience, language skills, and cultural adjustment. This activity was attended by several leaders, lecturers, students, and alumni of ITKESMU Sidrap, as well as health workers from other health institutions around Sidrap. The results of this socialization activity showed that the participants were very enthusiastic about participating in the training and acknowledged that this activity was very beneficial for them. The participants also suggested that there should be follow-up activities in the form of structured and comprehensive preparatory training to work abroad.

Abstract

This research was aimed to determine whether the use of Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy can improve students' reading comprehension of narrative texts. The researcher applied an experimental design. The population of this research was the eight-year students of SMP Negeri 1 Liliriaja with a sample of 56 students using a purposive sampling technique, and two classes were taken as samples; they were VIII A as the experimental class and VIII B as the control class. The researcher used a reading test as instrument.  The results showed that by using the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy on students' reading comprehension of narrative texts was improved. This can be seen from the students' post-test scores which were higher than the pre-test scores. The mean score of pre-test in experimental class VIII A was 48.57 and the post-test was 86.79, meanwhile the mean score of pre-test in  control class VIII B was 54.64 and the post-test was 65.36. In addition, as evidenced by an independent test, the t-count value of 7.304 was greater than the t-table value of 1.67. So it can be concluded that the use of Two Stay Two Stray strategy is effective on reading comprehension of narrative texts at the eight-year students of SMP Negeri 1 Liliriaja.Keywords: Two Stay Two Stray, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the motivation of students in learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a specific focus on eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 27 Makassar. And to explores the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that drive students’ motivation in English learning. The study utilized questionnaires and interviews as research instruments to collect data on student motivation levels. Data analysis was conducted using a 4-point Likert scale to determine the levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The findings of the study indicate that students at SMP Negeri 27 Makassar exhibited a remarkably high level of intrinsic motivation, driven by students' aspirations to enhance their understanding and proficiency in the English language. Additionally, the influence of extrinsic motivation factors showed a high level, attributed to the presence of a conducive learning environment and engaging teaching materials, which significantly contributed to student motivation. Overall, the level of student motivation in learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMPN 27 Makassar, reaching  72.23,  falls  within  the  category  of  very  high  motivation.  The  Intrinsic factors instance perseverance in following English learning, feeling of necessity in English language learning, and the expectations and aspirations associated with English language learning play a crucial role in student intrinsic motivation. Additionally, the extrinsic factors instance a supportive learning environment, engaging teaching methods, and the availability of adequate learning facilities, significantly contribute to students' motivation.Keywords: Motivation, Motivational Factor, English Learning

Abstract

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dampak intensitas pemberian corrective feedback pada pengembangan self-confidence dan self-expression mahasiswa melalui komunikasi daring sinkron dan asinkron pada pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dimana peneliti mendeskripsikan intensitas corrective feedback dosen dalam proses pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa Inggris melalui media komunikasi sinkronus dan asinkronus yang mampu memengaruhi perkembangan self-confidence dan self-expression mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian corrective feedback oleh dosen pengampu mata kuliah keterampilan produktif dan reseptif dan mata kuliah konsep bahasa Inggris baik melalui media komunikasi sinkronus maupun asinkronus mampu memengaruhi self-confidence mahasiswa dengan level atau tingkat yang berbeda dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Lebih lanjut hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa intensitas pemberian corrective feedback oleh dosen pengampu mata kuliah keterampilan produktif dan reseptif dan mata kuliah konsep bahasa Inggris baik melalui media komunikasi sinkronus maupun asinkronus mampu memengaruhi self-expression mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Dari hasil penelitian tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa intensitas pemberian corrective feedback oleh dosen dapat memengaruhi self-confidence dan self-expression mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris.  Kata Kunci: Corrective Feedback, Self-confidence, Self-expression

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the effectiveness of online learning in intensive speaking courses. The research method used is the descriptive-qualitative method. The participants in this study were students of the 2022 class of the English Education study program, Universitas Negeri Makassar for the 2022/2023 academic year. Eight students were selected as participants using a simple random sampling technique. The instrument of this research was an interview. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data collected in the interview transcripts. Overall, students had positive and negative perceptions of the effectiveness of online learning in intensive speaking courses. The students revealed that online learning in intensive speaking courses had positive and negative impacts on their learning process. Positive perceptions of online learning in intensive speaking courses included 1) increasing skills, 2) flexibility, and 3) increasing self-confidence. In contrast, the negative perceptions found from online learning in intensive speaking courses were 1) non-technical constraints, 2) technical constraints, and 3) lack of interaction. Even though students' perceptions varied, based on the data obtained, students' positive perceptions were more dominant than their negative perceptions. In addition, they all argued that online learning in intensive speaking courses was effective. Therefore, it can be concluded that online learning in intensive speaking courses is effective.

Abstract

The research aimed to determine the teacher's perception of the seating arrangement in student learning concentration. This research has subject were 3 english teacher who teach at SMPN 27 Makassar. This type of research is designed as qualitative descriptive research. The subjects were chosen by using a purposive technique. Data collected from interviews. The data obtained has been processed in several ways: data reduction, presentation, conclusion, and verification. Based on the result of the study, teachers' perceptions are divided into positive and negative perceptions. Positive perceptions include ease of application and the independent curriculum, helping understand the character and learning styles, the excellent and effective seating arrangement in learning English and understanding the ability to learn comprehension. Negative perceptions include a lack of learning concentration, limited capability to catch power, a lack of clear understanding of the material, and harmful influences that affect learning concentration. Based on the study's results, the teacher's perception equally dominates between positive and negative perceptions. Seating arrangements are, in fact, very influential on student learning concentration.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the way junior high school English teachers implemented their professional competencies in online teaching and learning. This research applied mix method by combining quantitative and qualitative method. The data were collected from three junior high school English teachers in Makassar using questionnaire and interview. The result of this research showed that the three teachers implemented almost all the elaboration of the implementation of professional competency in which teacher A and C were in excellent category while teacher B in good category. In conclusion, junior high school English teachers in Makassar continued to apply the principles of professional competencies even though the teaching and learning process was carried out online.

Abstract

Phonological modification of teacher talk is one of crucial things in teaching English as a foreign language for secondary school students. It aims at providing a comprehensible input and language model for students within the efforts of creating effective and meaningful teaching and learning activities designed. Therefore, this study is to explore the ways of employing English phonological modification and the reasons for using it for teaching secondary school students. To gain the data needed, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative research to explore the phenomenon in EFL classroom interaction involving three English teachers who perform their teaching at two different secondary schools in South Sulawesi, Indonesia; SMA Negeri 1 dan 2 Parepare. A direct classroom observation entailing audio recording and interview were utilized to gain the data and analyzed based on the conversational analysis framework. The data analysis reveals that EFL teachers regularly modify their English phonology by using four distinctive features, namely it is more extended pauses, slow rate of speech, exaggerate articulation, and clear articulation. Moreover, these modifications occurred in three numbers of reasons for emphasizing the presented materials, providing understandable and comprehensible input, and modeling the students to the target language. Those findings are taken into account that the use of phonological modification accelerated students’ comprehension in learning English.
