Abstract

Increasingly integrated global developments require every individual to possess global competencies, including prospective elementary school teachers who must be able to educate students to become knowledgeable, tolerant, and responsible global citizens who are able to adapt to globalization. However, various studies indicate that the global competency of university students in Indonesia is still relatively low. This study aims to describe the actual condition of global competencyamong elementary school teacher education students. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach with elementary school teacher education students as respondents. The research instrument includes three main components of global competency: knowledge, skills, and attitudes/values, which are developed based on four dimensions of global competence. However, in this article, the focus is only on discussing the knowledge component of the global competency of elementary school teacher education students. The results of the study indicate that the knowledge component of the global competency of students still tends to be low. These findings indicate the need for learning innovation, whether in the form of developing learning models or using media and other things that can improve the knowledge component, among elementary school teacher education students in facing global challenges

Abstract

This research seeks to present a comprehensive depiction of scholarly developments in the field of teaching and learning within Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by examining patterns of scientific productivity, dominant publication outlets, as well as the most active authors, countries, and their collaborative networks. Data were obtained through the extraction of relevant articles from the Scopus online database in November 2023. A total of 490 Scopus-indexed publications produced over a twenty-year period (2003–2023) were identified and selected for bibliometric analysis. The retrieved records were exported in BibTeX format and subsequently transformed into a data frame using functions available in the bibliometrix package. The results reveal a steady and notable growth in research output related to teaching and learning on ESD throughout the past two decades. In addition, the analysis highlights a shift in research emphasis: earlier studies tended to focus more broadly on ESD discourse, whereas more recent publications demonstrate increasing attention toward empirical investigations specifically addressing teaching and learning practices within the ESD context. Unlike existing ESD bibliometric studies that emphasize general thematic development, this review uniquely foregrounds the evolution of teaching and learning research within ESD. The fundamental finding reveals a clear longitudinal shift from conceptual discourse toward empirically driven pedagogical research, indicating the maturation of ESD as an evidence-based educational field.

Abstract

Conflict resolution skills are critical social-emotional competencies for primary school students, yet the dimensional profile of these skills in the Indonesian context remains insufficiently documented.  This study employed a quantitative descriptive survey design to examine the conflict resolution skills of 53 fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Karangreja and SDN 2 Karangreja, Karangreja District. Data were collected using a 54-item, four-point Likert scale questionnaire developed on the basis of Crawford and Bodine's (1996) six-dimensional framework, encompassing orientation, perception, emotional management, communication, creative thinking, and critical thinking skills. The instrument demonstrated satisfactory validity and high reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.87). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics.  All six dimensions fell within the Moderate mastery category. Communication skills recorded the highest mean score (57.02%), followed by orientation (56.39%), while emotional management yielded the lowest score (43.19%). These findings indicate that students possess foundational but incomplete conflict resolution competencies, with relational-communicative skills more developed than affective and higher-order cognitive capacities — a pattern that challenges a strictly linear reading of Crawford and Bodine's developmental sequence. The study contributes a theoretically grounded, empirically differentiated competency profile to the discourse on social-emotional learning in Indonesian primary education, with implications for curriculum design and targeted instructional intervention.

Abstract

This study examines “Moku Hesi Miti," a unique birth ritual of the Abui community in Alor Regency, which holds profound moral, social, and spiritual values but is at risk of being forgotten amid modernisation. This study aims to comprehensively document this tradition and identify its cultural values in child rearing. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through two-stage interviews with an elder of the Takpala traditional community. Findings indicate that “Moku Hesi Miti” fundamentally emphasises the critical role of breast milk as a source of life and sacred blessing, in line with global health recommendations, and highlights the deep connection between physical and spiritual health. This ritual, which involves specific roles for the “Release Tree” and the father, as well as adherence to social taboos, educates children to become strong, independent, and virtuous. This study makes a unique contribution by explaining how this traditional practice strengthens health outcomes and cultural values, offering new perspectives on sociocultural factors in maternal and child health, and enhancing anthropological understanding of social control mechanisms. Ultimately, understanding “Moku Hesi Miti” can serve as the foundation for culturally sensitive public health programs and help preserve local heritage and sustainable ethnic childcare practices.

Abstract

This study aims to identify elementary students' collaborative skill profiles, analyze teachers' pedagogical practices in facilitating collaboration, and explore relationships between students' collaborative competencies and teachers' instructional approaches in social learning contexts. Employing sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the research involved 132 fifth-grade students and three purposively selected teachers from five public elementary schools in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through systematic classroom observations, student self-assessment surveys utilizing instruments adapted from Partnership for 21st Century Learning framework (Cronbach's α=0.87), and semi-structured teacher interviews. Quantitative data underwent descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, while qualitative data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis. Integration employed joint display matrices generating meta-inferences. Findings reveal students' collaborative skills remain at moderate levels (M=1.93, SD=0.219), with shared responsibility constituting the weakest dimension (M=1.66). Gender demonstrates no significant effect across all dimensions (p>0.05). Qualitative analysis exposes instructional practices as pseudo-collaboration, group activities lacking essential structural elements including role differentiation, positive interdependence, and individual accountability. This pedagogical insufficiency originates from systemic deficiencies: inadequate professional development, conceptual confusion between grouping and structured collaboration, and institutional contradictions between competency mandates and content-coverage pressures. Implications necessitate transformative interventions in teacher professional development, instructional design incorporating collaborative structures, and assessment systems capturing collaborative processes and individual contributions.

Abstract

This study examines violence in caregiving as a serious problem that negatively impacts child development. Violence against children includes physical, emotional, verbal, symbolic, and sexual acts that cause physical, psychological, or sexual harm. The study used a literature review method to identify the causes of violence in caregiving, such as economic stress, lack of parental education, a history of family violence, and mental health problems in parents. Using Bandura's social learning theory, the study sought to understand how violent behavior can be learned and imitated within the family environment, and how interventions can be designed to change these behavioral patterns. The findings indicate that violence in caregiving contributes to psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD in children. Effective prevention and intervention strategies include parent education, social support, mental health services, and public policies that support families. In addition, parent education and support programs, early intervention, and public awareness campaigns can help reduce the incidence of violence and improve child well-being. This study emphasizes the importance of a holistic and multisectoral approach to addressing violence in caregiving, with the goal of creating a safe and supportive environment for healthy and happy child development.

Abstract

Early reading is a fundamental skill that supports students’ cognitive and academic development in elementary education. However, many students still experience difficulties in recognizing letters, associating sounds with symbols, and understanding simple texts. These challenges indicate that early reading instruction has not optimally integrated phonological and contextual aspects of learning. This study aimed to develop a learning approach that integrates contextual and phonological aspects in early reading instruction. The research employed an Educational Design Research approach consisting of analysis, design, and evaluation stages. The participants included expert validators, elementary school teachers, and first-grade students. Data were collected through validation sheets, observation, questionnaires, and early reading tests. The results show that the developed learning approach is valid and feasible to be implemented in early reading instruction. The validation results indicate a high level of validity, and the learning process becomes more meaningful through the integration of contextual experiences and sound-symbol recognition. Students demonstrate better engagement and participation during the learning process. In conclusion, the integration of contextual and phonological approaches is appropriate for early reading instruction and has the potential to improve students’ early reading skills in elementary schools.
