Abstract

One of the strategies to respond the formative assessment results is corrective feedback. Through corrective feedback, it can be verified and elaborated the part of each items where an error occurs which must be reviewed and corrected by students based on the signs given. The purpose of this research is to review the effect of corrective feedback on formative evaluation and mathematics self-esteem on student’s mathematics learning outcome on junior high school by controlling the prior mathematics knowledge of students. The samples were 120 seventh grade students in junior high school on first semester chosen by using random sampling. The method in this research is quasi experiment by using the design of treatment by level 2 × 2. Data were analyzed by using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). After controlling the prior mathematics knowledge of students, in general, direct corrective feedback was more suited to increase mathematics learning outcomes on junior high school student than indirect corrective feedback. There was an interaction effect on providing corrective feedback and self-esteem on the mathematics learning outcomes.  For the student who have high self-esteem, indirect corrective feedback is more suitable to increase mathematics learning outcomes while for the students who have low self-esteem, direct corrective feedback is more suitable to increase mathematics learning outcomes. It is recommended to the mathematics teachers to provide corrective feedback after provision of formative assessment in their class.

Abstract

Changes in the mathematics education curriculum affect the preparation of prospective teachers to learn as well as possible and provide extensive opportunities and experiences regarding mathematical proof in secondary schools, especially those reflecting the nature and role of proof in the field of mathematics. Teachers' ability to respond to this depends on their understanding of proof in a mathematical context. This research examined the understanding of 36 prospective mathematics teachers at Tanjungpura University regarding proof and their ability to prove problems in the context of high school mathematics. The data were collected through a series of interviews focused on their responses to the role of proof and from tests to prove math problems. This research is descriptive-analytical research, which describes the conception of prospective mathematics teachers as knowledgeable in mathematics about proof. However, some view proof as a tool for studying mathematics. This research also found that many of them had a limited view of the nature of proof. They lacked a clear understanding of the subject of demonstrating or explaining the process of proving a mathematical statement.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine students' mathematical lateral thinking skills in creative problem-solving, differences in subjects' answers based on the level of their study period, and factors that affect students' lateral thinking skills. The descriptive method was used in the form of an educational survey. The sampling technique used in this research was stratified random sampling. The research subjects were first, third, and fifth-semester students of Mathematics Education at FKIP Tanjungpura University in 2019. The data collection technique used was the "Paper-and-pencil Assessment," with the written test sheet adopted from the Mathematical Lateral Logic Test by Bruce Woodcock. The results showed that students' lateral mathematical thinking skills in creative problem-solving were in the poor category, with an average score of 9.39 out of 25. The results of statistical tests with a value of χ2 indicated that the answers to the subjects were different based on the level of study. The ability to recognize dominant ideas and the polarization of perception of the problem, and the ability to use other ideas are the dominant factors affecting the level of students' mathematical lateral thinking skills in all subject groups. In general, the way of thinking with formal logic or thinking vertically affected students' lateral thinking patterns.

Abstract

There is a misconception about elementary school geometry material that makes the teacher's scientific attitude in implementing learning in the classroom still not optimal and causes the application of IT transformation to be uneven. This research aims to describe the misconceptions about geometry among elementary school teachers, the scientific attitudes of elementary school teachers in the process of learning geometry, and how elementary school teachers overcome misconceptions and optimize scientific attitudes learned from the role of IT. The subjects of this study were 171 teachers from 18 districts and cities. The research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative form by giving questionnaires about elementary school geometry concepts and teachers' scientific attitudes toward learning, analyzing answers according to criteria, and exploring the relationship between misconceptions and scientific attitudes learned from IT transformation. The results of this study indicate that conceptual errors were found in the research subjects, which included generalization and specialization misconceptions; the teacher's scientific attitude influences the misconceptions experienced; and the role of IT can help calculate and visualize abstract things in learning. The application of IT in the learning process shows good results for overcoming teachers' misconceptions and scientific attitudes, and of course, it can be an option for teachers to be able to apply it with various IT-based learning media that attract students' learning interests.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to 1) analyze gender-based differences in visual mathematical thinking for solving algebraic problems, 2) explore how e-learning technology, specifically the Edlink platform, supports algebra understanding through visualization, and 3) assess the effectiveness of mathematical software in aiding students to visualize and solve algebraic problems. Method: A qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory method was used for this study. It involved a case study of students enrolled in the Mathematics Education Program who attended algebra courses. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, interviews, direct observation, and documentation. The study sample consisted of 278 students, including 98 male and 180 female participants. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were employed to analyze the gender-based differences in visual thinking abilities. Findings: The results indicate that male students demonstrated more dominant visual mathematical thinking abilities compared to female students, particularly in understanding, imagining, and presenting algebraic solutions. Statistically, the independent samples t-test revealed a significant gender difference (p < 0.001). The use of the Edlink e-learning platform was found to be effective in aiding students' algebra understanding through enhanced visualization of mathematical concepts. Significance: The study concludes that gender differences affect visual mathematical thinking abilities, with male students showing greater proficiency in solving algebraic problems visually than female students. Furthermore, the integration of the Edlink e-learning platform significantly enhanced students' understanding of algebraic concepts through effective visualization. Therefore, incorporating technology in mathematics education can enrich the learning experience and improve student outcomes.

Abstract

This Community Service Activity began with a discussion between the mathematics education study program lecturers, the faculty of teaching and educational sciences at Tanjungpura University, and the chairman of the Kubu Raya Subject Teachers' Conference about the rapid development of technology, especially in mathematics learning. Through this discussion, it was found that many teachers still need to utilize technology in teaching mathematics. One technology that is often used in mathematics learning is GeoGebra. GeoGebra is an application with various features that can be used to explain concepts and numbers in mathematics learning, such as plane geometry, space geometry, algebra, etc. Therefore, teachers need technology-related training to assist in learning, especially GeoGebra. Mastery of this technology is an unavoidable demand, and it also plays a role in improving education in Indonesia, especially in West Kalimantan. This training was held on 8 August 2024, with a total of forty-five participants consisting of thirty-five mathematics teachers from various junior high schools in Kubu Raya, three mathematics education students, and seven lecturers at the Tanjungpura University mathematics education study program. This training aims to increase teachers' motivation and ability to use GeoGebra in mathematics learning. The outputs produced in this activity are 1) implementation of training, 2) publication of documentary video activities on social media, and 3) activity reports.
