Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the problems that faced by the teachers in teaching and lab head in managing the language laboratory. This research also tried to seek information regarding the solution taken by teachers and lab manager to solve those problems. Subjects of this research consisted of English teachers and lab manager of MAN Model Bandar Lampung. Research findings reveal the following this: a. Teachers problems; equipment number is not enough with students` number, majority teachers are not professional in using lab equipments, majority teachers only using lab for teaching listening, there are a few teachers do not know lab equipments name, nor they vary teaching activities. b. Lab manager`s problem; he found difficulties in searching new lab teaching materials, lab equipments are not adequate with students number, lab manager did not give orientation for teachers and students, and he also did not have lab technician to fix broken equipments. To overcome those problems, they read manual book of language lab use, split between fast and weak students in different groups, borrowing lab equipment and teaching materials from other schools, asking help from another school which has technician.

The objective of this research was to describe the mastery of students in using degrees of Comparison of SMK PGRI 4 BandarLampung.The result of the data analysis of students’ mastery in using Degrees of comparison of the 10th grade students of SMK PGRI 4 Bandar Lampung shown that the students’ mastery of 2016/2017 had fair level.

Abstract

To promote themselves, airlines do not only serve better but also have slogans to be known as their identities. The use of slogans is unique and appealing if they are seen from linguistics point of view. The objectives of this research are to find out the Syntactic categories, semantic claims and Speech acts that used by 35 Airlines Slogans in five continents. To know the answers, the researcher used Content analysis and finds that Syntax category which mostly used by Airlines slogans around the world is phrase, majority airlines slogans take benefits from the use of we are different and unique claim, and the most frequent speech act that used by airline slogan is representative.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know the ability of UIN Raden Intan English department to translate text from Indonesian to English and to know errors made by students in translating. The methodology employed was quantitative content analysis with a research instrument is a rubric. Results show students translation abilities of UIN Raden Intan English Department are very good with 9 students (33.4 %), fair with 8 students (29.6 %), good with 5 students (18.5 %), bad (14.5 %), and almost excellent 1 student(3.7%). Translation errors are grammatical errors,  missing word, mother tongue word use, different meaning production, word order, word choice, and misspelling.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know the kinds of vocabulary learning strategies, the most and the least vocabulary learning strategies, and strategy use based on gender differences. The methodology employed was survey with a research instrument questionnaire and interview. Results show Vocabulary Learning Strategies are Metacognitive, cognitive, memorization/repetition, and activation. Respondents tended to apply activation strategy as the highest, and it is indicated with a mean score (3.12). On the other side, the least utilized strategy was the memories/repetition strategy, and it is shown with the lowest mean score (1.87). Female students had a tendency to apply activation strategy, and it is indicated with the highest mean score (3.04) and least used memories/repetition strategies, and it is shown by mean score (1.84).    In addition, the highest strategy employed by male students was also an activation strategy with mean score (3.0), and the lowest strategy was memories/repetition with the lowest score (1.51).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the types of Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS), the most and least frequently used VLSs by female and male students, and the types of VLSs chosen to address vocabulary learning problems. This study employed a survey technique. The population for this study was drawn from Lampung State Islamic University's English Education Department, which consisted of three classes and had a total enrollment of approximately 75 students. Female students totaled 64, while male students totaled 11. The sample consisted of fourth-semester students. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire that Gu and Johnson proposed in 1996. Interviews were also used as a tool. All English department students at Lampung State Islamic University used one of four vocabulary learning strategies. Among the four categories of Vocabulary Learning Strategies, students in the three classes favoured metacognitive strategies the most, as indicated by the mean score (2.90). On the other hand, the least frequently used strategy was memory/repetition, as indicated by the lowest mean score (2.22). Female students tended to use metacognitive strategies, as indicated by their highest mean score (2.87), while male students tended to use memories/repetition strategies, as indicated by their average score (2.2). Additionally, the most frequently used strategy by male students was metacognitive strategy with a mean score of (2.93), while the least frequently used strategy was activation with a mean score of (2.93). (2.31). To overcome the problem of vocabulary acquisition, the students used the strategies of consulting a dictionary first, followed by learning grammar and asking other people second. The final strategies used were word practise and internet surfing.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher focused on the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability. The objective of the research was to know whether there was a correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability at the first semester of eleventh grade of MAN 2 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2017/2018. There were two variables in this research, the independent variable, vocabulary mastery (X) and dependent variable, Translation ability (Y). This is correlational research, it is used to know the correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability. In taking the sample of the research, the cluster random sampling was applied. The population of the research was taken from the students of eleventh grade of MAN 2 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample of the research was taken 39 students from 197 populations. In collecting the data of the research, the researcher used objective test that were multiple choices consisted 20 items and one text for translation test. In this research, SPSS was used to compute Pearson Product Moment’s formula.After doing the hypothetical testing, the result demonstrated that there was positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability. Based on the data analysis computed by SPSS, it was obtained that Sig (P Value) = 0.000 and α=0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected because Sig (P Value) =0.000 < α=0.05. Based on this research, it was suggested that to have a good ability in translating, the students should have a good mastery of vocabulary

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to classify the types of error made by the students in pronouncing silent letter, to count the total of errors that students made, and to know the source of errors. The subjects of the research were the students at the second semester of English Education Raden Intan State Islamic University of Lampung. The H class of the afforementioned students were the sample and purposing sampling technique was used to sample that class of 29 students. The result of the research showed that there were 4 types of errors; omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The total of errors were 343 error’s items which made by the students. Addition was the most common errors made by the students, which was 211 items or 61,51%. Second most common was misformation with 84 items or 24,48%. It then followed by omission with 46 items or 13,41%. At the end of the errors’ classification based on surface strategy taxonomy was misordering with 2 items or 0,58%.

Abstract

There were difficulties faced by translators in translating text. Thus, because they found it difficult to translate and did not have a lot of vocabulary, they needed a translation tool such as Google Translate. Therefore, this research discussed the quality of the translation carried out by Google Translate in translating English text into Indonesian based on the theory of Rochayah Machali. The research methodology of this research was content analysis quantitative design. In this research, the population were texts about health from the Jakarta Post. The samples of the research were 32 Jakarta Post texts with the theme of health taken by simple random sampling. The instrument of this research was the rubric Rochayah Machali. After analyzing the data, it was found that from a total of 32 texts there were Google Translate abilities in the good category with 11 translations (34.375%), very good with 9 translations (28.125%), almost excellent with 7 translations (21.875%), fair with 3 translations (9,375). %), and bad category with 2 translations (6.25%). From the discussion above, it was concluded that Google Translate had a good translation with the highest score in the good category, namely 11 translations. The use of Google Translate was a solution for anyone to understand the text as a whole so it became a solution in understanding text in a foreign language, such as English
