Abstract

Language development programs in higher education institutions have been facing concurring obstacles. A great part of these obstacles are caused by low proficiency level of students. The fact that prospective students are considered to have adequate experience in learning foreign language does not necessarily make the programs design undemanding. In order to cope with this challenge, higher education institutions need to perform thorough and careful processes of designing language development programs. This article argues that determining realistic goals, keeping up with latest research findings, and creating supportive environments will greatly contribute to effectiveness of these programs.

Abstract

This research aims to unravel religious biases in the practice of early marriage in Indonesia and to strengthen Islamic Family Law literacy among the public. Despite the revision of the Marriage Law through Law No. 16/2019, early marriage remains widespread in Indonesia. One of the contributing factors is the community's religious understanding, rooted in authoritarian fiqh. Originally, fiqh represented a dynamic human interpretation of human problems, but it has transformed into an authoritarian understanding. This study employs a library research method, adopting a descriptive-analytic approach with a hermeneutic-negotiative framework, or progressive fiqh, as introduced by Khaled Abou El Fadl. The findings of this research reveal two key points: First, Islamic legal discourse should produce inclusive, progressive, and tolerant fiqh. Fiqh should be understood through diverse perspectives, refreshed hypotheses, and progressive legal reasoning. In contrast, authoritarianism in interpreting fiqh can stifle creativity and limit human engagement with Islamic law. Second, the government's program on Marriage Age Maturity can serve as a manifestation of the concept of "akil baligh" in authoritative Islamic law. Supported by premarital counseling programs, this can help ensure the realization of marriage objectives while preserving the overall aims of Islamic law.

Abstract

The idea of integrating human knowledge and Islamic values, or Islamization of knowledge, has triggered fruitful discussions, but the concrete output in terms of an ‘Islamized' textbook has not occurred. In this paper, we report practical insights from the textbook writing initiative at Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) to materialize the idea. Our reflection on the ongoing process has identified several challenges. These include diversity of the disciplines, limited exposure to the philosophy of knowledge, lack of ready-to-use integration methods and inadequate mastery of the Islamic legacy. To cope with the challenges, we have taken several actions, including arranging a series of workshops (on the philosophy of knowledge and integration strategies), providing relevant literature and offering technical assistance. In concluding, we present an overview of the future directions that UII will take. Keywords: textbook writing; Islamization of knowledge; integration of human knowledge.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of profitability in moderating the relationship between liquidity and leverage on financial distress in Islamic banking. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach, and the panel data analysis method is implemented using E-views 12. The sample Islamic banking companies listed on The Financial Services Authority (OJK) for a period of four years, namely the 2021-2024 period. The sampling technique employs purposive sampling to collect company data that matches the specified criteria. The results showed that the liquidity ratio does not have a significant effect on financial distress, while leverage has a significant effect on financial distress. Profitability is unable to moderate the relationship between the liquidity ratio and financial distress, but profitability is able to moderate the relationship between leverage and financial distress. The implications of this study help to understand the development and performance of the companies studied and can be used as input and consideration for companies in taking steps to prevent bankruptcy.

Abstract

This paper discusses the development of a Canva application audio based on visual learning media in the Fiqh learning material in the fifth grade at SDI Matsaratul Huda Panempan Pamekasan. The method used in the research is a developmental research approach, which consists of initial analysis, material identification, product development, and testing. After the product was developed, the feasibility assessment was carried out by the expert to evaluate the media design, content alignment, design completeness, and attractiveness. The expert assessment results show that audio-visual learning media design based on Canva obtained a score of 83 percent in the good category. Limited students’ feedback also indicates a score of 77,13 percent with the good category. Based on theassessments from experts and students, it can be concluded that this Canva-based audio-visual learning media is suitable for use in the experimental school. The field trial results indicate a score of 66.25 percent in the first cycle and 81 percent in the second cycle. The increased percentage of students’ learning outcomes shows that they better understand Fiqh learning material by applying audio-visual learning media based on the Canva application, which has good criteria. Therefore, this developed media can be applied, either in online or offline learning

Abstract

This study examines poor waste management as an environmental, ethical, and governance challenge by integrating insights from Islamic jurisprudence, state regulations, and behavioral governance. The aim is to explain how ecological degradation arises from human behavior that contradicts religious principles and formal waste management laws, and to propose a conceptual model linking ethical norms to regulatory mechanisms and behavior. Using a qualitative conceptual methodology, the study analyzes scriptural sources, classical jurisprudential reasoning, national waste regulations, and descriptive evidence of environmental conditions to build an interdisciplinary understanding of this issue. The results show that Islamic jurisprudence establishes clear prohibitions against actions that result in environmental damage, framing waste pollution as a violation of ethical and legal obligations. National regulations also mandate responsible waste management practices, yet poor management persists because behavioral changes have not aligned with legal expectations. This analysis highlights the central role of human behavior as a determining factor in waste governance, illustrating how religious education, societal norms, and institutional policies shape or hinder responsible practices. The integrated model developed in this study demonstrates that effective waste governance requires the convergence of moral awareness, legal enforcement, and behavioral adaptation. This study concludes that sustainable environmental management in a Muslim-majority context depends on aligning internal ethical motivations with external regulatory frameworks. This conceptual integration offers a foundation for future empirical research and suggests new pathways for policy design, community engagement, and faith-based environmental education

Abstract

Purpose – This article examines marriage registration in Islamic family law by positioning it as a legal-political arena, rather than merely an administrative requirement. Employing a qualitative socio-legal approach, this study investigates how the modern state constructs compulsory marriage registration as a mechanism for integrating Islamic norms, public interest, and legal pluralism. The analysis combines normative Islamic legal inquiry, historical examination of regulatory developments, and legal-political theories—particularly John Hart Ely’s representation-reinforcing theory, Savigny’s historical jurisprudence, and Mahfud MD’s contextual legal-political framework. Methods– This study employs a socio-legal method to examine marriage registration as a legal, social, and political construct within the framework of Islamic family law. Findings – The findings demonstrate that marriage registration signifies the transformation of Islamic family law from a community-based legal order into a state-centered legal system oriented toward rights protection, legal certainty, and social justice. From the perspective of maṣlaḥah mursalah and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, marriage registration functions as a legal mechanism to safeguard vulnerable groups, especially women and children, while simultaneously serving as a state instrument for shaping a legally recognized and administratively ordered family structure.  Research implications – The main contribution of this article lies in proposing an analytical framework that conceptualizes marriage registration as a site of legal-political negotiation between the state, religion and society. By foregrounding power relations, legal policy, and normative integration, this study advances contemporary scholarship on Islamic family law and highlights the political dimensions of the regulation of family institutions in Muslim societies.
