Abstract

Ethnomatic is an interaction between mathematics with local culture. This study aims to explore ethnomatic on a traditional game called ‘Lore” in plane figure geometry learning. This is a qualitative study by using ethnography approach. The subjects of this research were elementary students who studied plane figure material by using a traditional game, Lore. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentations. The data analysis technique was by doing field observation then giving questions related to whatever the subjects did by using the game. On an abstract plane figure geometry learning, it could be applied into more concrete in the traditional game and also with Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). The findings showed that there was an ethnomatic on the traditional game, Lore in geometry learning especially on plane figure material (square, rectangle, trapezoid, and circle) based on RME. So, by having the relatedness it made the students knew the relationship of local culture based on RME and mathematics is an interrelated unit.

Abstract

Abstract

Tambo is a historical literary work that contains the origins of the ancestors and customs of the Minangkabau people. One of the important themes in the Tambo is the division of two systems of government in Minangkabau customs called Lareh Nan Duo, which is full of symbolic language. This study aims to dismantle the meaning of Tambo which is required by the symbolic and ideological language. Roland Barthes' semiological theory is used to uncover the symbolic meaning behind the story of Lareh Nan Duo. This research is a qualitative study with a qualitative descriptive method. The data obtained is through a literature study. The research object material is sourced from Tambo text by Datoek Batoeah Sango (1959). The units of data analysis in this research are words, sentences, phrases, paragraphs, and discourses that tell about Lareh Nan Duo. The results of the analysis illustrate that the Minangkabau society is a dualistic society, divided by two systems of government and their rules. The journey of the Minangkabau people on the dualism of the system and the rules gave a sign that the Minangkabau people held to two truths. The Minangkabau people reduce them to a map, namely Islam. The Minangkabau people make Islam as harmonization in a prolonged dualism. This research can add to the treasures and become a reference for researchers in the field of Barthes’s Semiology which is applied to Tambo. This research opens up space for other researchers to get involved in the historiography

Abstract

The presence of children in household life challenges the parents, particularly in terms of how to grow and educate them. The first step in establishing communication between children is towards the use of language and expressions. The language used varies and will continue to change as the child's life and age progress. This paper aims to elaborate on the instructions of the Qur'an and Sunnah regarding the language style that parents should use when educating their children. This research used qualitative research  used library research towards secondary data in the form of interpretations of Quranic verses and Sunnah explanations of parental language styles and expressions in educating children found in Islamic teachings. The data were analyzed using a content analysis approach and added by theory of discourse analysis. The research shows that the Qur'an and Sunnah have guided parents to use polite, gentle, and loving language in educating their children regardless of their age or the good or bad of their behavior. The language discourses used by the parents to teach the children have already been stated into alquran and sunnah based on the ages of the children itself.

Abstract

Since 2015, Asean Economic Community has +been implemented in Indonesia. One of the great changes is using English for communication. English has still been a foreign language for Indonesian people. Consequently, English is learned and started in kindergarten from university to make Indonesian people familiar with English. Listening becomes a difficult subject for the students because they could not answer the questions and they got bad grades for examination. It was to find out what the need analysis important for the teacher and students to study English. It used a descriptive qualitative method with the instruments such as questionnaires, document checklists, and interviews. The population of the research was 72 students and the sampling was total sampling. After analyzing the data, from the questionnaire filled up by students, it is found that almost all students agree about the items of teaching materials proposed by Hutchinson and Water. The results are 92.75% for 2016 A, 98.87% for 2016 B, and 92.46 % for 2016 C. The total is 94.69% of students agree with the teaching material. From the document, checklist shows that the teaching materials used on the Listening subject have not fulfilled provide a stimulus to learning, help to organize the teaching-learning process, use nature of language and learning, provide nature of learning task, broadening the teacher’s knowledge, and provide correct and appropriate language use. Interview information shows that teaching materials for Listening subjects are a combination of many sources without being analyzed and investigated by lecturers. Finally, the most important aspect is an appropriate teaching material must be made to fulfill the learning outcomes.
