Population is concentrated in urban areas can cause the external diseconomies on environment if it exceeds the carrying capacity of the space and the urban economy. Otherwise the quality of the environment is getting better, led to the concentration of population in urban areas are increasingly high. This study aims to analyze the relationship of causality between the urban concentration and environmental quality in urban agglomeration areas. The data used in the study of secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of statistics and the City Government from 2000 to 2013. The analytical method used is the Granger causality and descriptive. Granger causality study results showed no pattern of reciprocal causality, between urban concentration and the quality of the environment, but there unidirectional relationship between the urban concentration and environmental quality. This means that increasing urban concentration led to decreased environmental quality.

Abstract

Java Island accounts for more than half of Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP), hence it is where the majority of economic activities are concentrated, even though mostly of those major contributions are from certain cities. However, the quality of education and health shown by average years of schooling and life expectancy at birth in Java Island is unevenly distributed when compared with economic growth. This research aims to analyze the causalities and effects of economic growth, education, and health using simultaneous equations models on panel data that consists of 34 cities in Java Island spanning from 2015 to 2019, which are decomposed into three income classifications. Results indicate positive and significant effect from education toward economic growth on every income level. Health instead only brings positive and significant effect toward economic growth in high-income cities. Economic growth affects education positively in upper-middle and lower-middle income cities, and affects health positively only in upper-middle income. Ultimately, the relationship between education and health shows that they have positive and significant effects on each other and are consistent across all income groups.

Abstract

The phenomenon of urbanization continues to increase in Indonesia. Urbanization can have both positive and negative influences. The higher urban population will push many industries, but environmental issues also potentially increase. On the other hand, more density leads to increased competition for work, which potentially increases crime. As a result, this study intends to investigate how urbanization affects Indonesia's environmental, economic, and social performance. The study employed a quantitative technique utilizing panel data from 33 Indonesian provinces for the years 2010, 2015, and 2020, which was then evaluated using the structural equation-partial least square model on SmartPLS 3.0. The findings revealed that urbanization had a significant negative effect on the environmental quality index. Meanwhile, urbanization had a significant positive effect on gross regional domestic product and the number of victims of theft. It can be concluded that urbanization encouraged economic improvement, but had the potential to worsen environmental conditions and crime. Thus, to reduce the negative impact on the environment, the government needs to emphasize the use of environmentally friendly fuels to the public. Also, implementing requirements for residents who will carry out urbanization to have skills that can be absorbed by the world of work
