Abstract

Motor development theory suggests that play-based activities promote motor competence by providing repeated, varied movement experiences that enhance coordination, balance, agility, and object-control skills through active exploration and practice. This study examines the effect of play-based activities on the motor ability of elementary school students. The study was motivated by the low level of motor skills among students at SDN 20/VI Muara Madras, reflected in their difficulty performing movement tasks during physical education classes and the reduced engagement in physical play due to increased gadget use and limited play facilities. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 17 fifth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Motor ability was assessed using the Scott Motor Ability Test, which comprises four components: Basketball Throw, 4-Second Dash, Wall Pass, and Standing Broad Jump. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the paired-sample t-test, and Cohen's d effect size. The mean motor ability score increased from 200.00 at pretest to 205.67 at posttest, representing a mean difference of 5.67 points. However, the paired-sample t-test indicated that this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.096). The calculated Cohen's d of 0.429 indicated a moderate effect size. These findings indicate that the play-based intervention did not produce a statistically significant improvement in students' motor ability under the conditions of this study. Further research employing larger samples, longer intervention periods, and stronger experimental controls is recommended to clarify the effectiveness of play-based approaches in enhancing motor development among elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the individual and combined effects of motor coordination and socioeconomic status on Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) among elementary school students. A quantitative study using a 2 × 2 factorial design was conducted involving 72 students selected through purposive sampling from a population of 101 students at SDN 45 Bungo Pasang, Padang City. FMS were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2), motor coordination was measured using the (KTK), and socioeconomic status was classified based on parental socioeconomic data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Two-Way ANOVA. Significant differences were found between students with high and low motor coordination (p = 0.028) and between students with moderate and low socioeconomic status (p = 0.014). A significant interaction effect was also identified between motor coordination and socioeconomic status (p < 0.001). FMS development is influenced by both motor coordination and socioeconomic conditions, highlighting the importance of integrating individual motor competence and environmental support in physical education programs.

Abstract

The background of this research is that there are still elementary school children in Lembah Melintang District with low levels of physical activity and nutritional status that is not yet normal, which has the potential to affect the development of gross motor skills. Variations in physical activity, nutritional status, and lack of involvement in structured physical activities and active games, coupled with differences in parenting patterns and parental attention, are thought to be related to differences in gross motor skills in children. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and gross motor skills of elementary school children in Lembah Melintang District, to determine the relationship between nutritional status and gross motor skills of elementary school children in Lembah Melintang District, and to determine the relationship between physical activity and nutritional status and gross motor skills of elementary school children in Lembah Melintang District. This study uses a quantitative approach with an associative research type. With a population and sample of 45 students using a total sampling technique. The research variables consist of physical activity, nutritional status, and gross motor skills which are measured using the PAQ-C instrument, anthropometric measurements, and gross motor tests in the form of running and jumping. Data analysis techniques include descriptive analysis, prerequisite tests, and inferential analysis. The results of the study showed that there was a relationship between physical activity and gross motor skills (R 0.404) with a contribution of 16.3%, and nutritional status had a relationship with gross motor skills (R 0.334) with a contribution of 11.2%. There was also a relationship between physical activity and nutritional status with gross motor skills (R 0.519) with a contribution of 26.9%, so it was proven that they complement each other in supporting the gross motor development of elementary school children.

Abstract

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are essential for children's physical development and lifelong participation in physical activity. However, many elementary school students still demonstrate low levels of locomotor, object-control, and stability skills. This systematic literature review examined the effectiveness of various learning media, including analog tools (e.g., flash cards and board games) and digital technologies (e.g., augmented reality, virtual reality, and mobile applications), in improving FMS among elementary school children. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and used Scopus as the primary database. From 114 initially identified records, 10 studies met the final inclusion criteria and were analyzed in depth. Study quality was assessed using the FICO framework (Focus, Information, Context, Outcome). The findings indicate that game-based and flash-card learning media consistently improved locomotor skills, while augmented reality and mobile-based interventions produced equal or superior outcomes compared with conventional teaching methods. Adapted media, such as e-books and QR-code resources, also supported children with sensory or intellectual differences in developing FMS. Nevertheless, most studies employed small samples and single-group pretest–posttest designs, limiting the strength of causal inferences. Overall, learning media show considerable potential to enhance FMS development when systematically integrated into physical education programs. Future research should prioritize randomized controlled trials, longer intervention periods, and standardized reporting to strengthen the evidence base for educational practice and policy.

Abstract

Twenty20 (T20) Cricket matches are one of the National Championship, BK PON, and PON for the Province Cricket Championship. Meanwhile, since the West Sumatra Men's Cricket Team participated in the 2014 National Championship until the BK PON in 2023, this team never reached the podium in that event. Even in the last BK PON, they lost in the group stage. This team also lost in other events, so they failed to qualify for the 2024 PON. This study aims to analyze the causes of the West Sumatra Man Cricket Team's defeat in the T20 event, through match statistics. This study is a descriptive study with the object of research of the West Sumatra Men's Cricket Team, consisting of 14 athletes, in the T20 match, facing three opposing teams (Banten, West Java, and East Kalimantan). The instruments used include match statistics, especially the number of team runs and individual runs during the batting innings, which are analyzed through the Indonesian Cricket Association website and video recordings of matches. The results obtained in the T20 event of the West Sumatra Men's Cricket Team from individual statistics (Batting) show that the performance of each athlete is not very good compared to the opposing team, so the team cannot achieve victory. Further research is needed to compare the performance of the West Sumatra Men's Cricket Team with the winning team in the T20 event.

Abstract

Research on outdoor play activities (OPA) and early childhood motor skills has received considerable attention due to its significant role in supporting children's physical, cognitive, and social development. However, the global literature has not been comprehensively mapped over a long period. This study aims to analyze the trends, structure, and dynamics of OPA research during the period 2006–2026. The study uses a bibliometric approach. Data were obtained from the Scopus database, consisting of 211 systematically selected publications, and then analyzed using VOSviewer software through visualization of collaboration networks, co-citations, and keyword co-occurrences. The study findings indicate that the highest number of publications in 2021 was 25, with a significant increasing trend since 2018. Dominant keywords include children, motor skills, physical activity, and outdoor play, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of health, education, and the environment. Influential authors and publications have largely focused on the importance of social and environmental factors on children's physical activity (Brown et al., 2009, Xue et al., 2007, and Boldemann et al., 2006). Research collaboration is strongest in developed countries such as the United States, Australia, and Canada, while contributions from developing countries remain limited. This study demonstrates that OPA has evolved into a multidisciplinary field that supports holistic child development. In practice, stronger global collaboration can be achieved through international research partnerships and shared data platforms, while local exploration should involve culturally relevant play programs and community-based interventions, particularly in developing countries, to generate context-specific evidence and inform education and health policy.
