Abstract

Adolescent obesity is a growing public health issue globally and in Indonesia, particularly among girls aged 16–18 in the Bogor district. Despite this trend, the determinants of obesity in this population remain underexplored. This study aims to identify and analyze the risk factors associated with obesity among adolescent girls in the Bogor district using a case-control approach. An observational analytical study with a case-control design was conducted from May to September 2024, involving 104 adolescent girls aged 16–18 selected through simple random sampling. Data on anthropometry, dietary intake, physical activity, sleep duration, and family socioeconomic status were collected via validated questionnaires and analyzed using chi-square and logistic regression tests. Multivariate analysis identified five significant risk factors for obesity: excessive energy intake (OR=12.566), high family income (OR=3.494), low maternal education (OR=0.246), short sleep duration (OR=0.183), and low fiber intake (OR=0.087). Energy intake emerged as the most influential determinant. Other factors like physical activity, maternal employment, and protein intake were not statistically significant. The findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions focusing on balanced nutrition education, particularly among families with higher incomes and lower maternal education levels. Future research should explore the effectiveness of school-based and parent-involved nutritional interventions tailored to socioeconomic differences to prevent obesity from persisting into adulthood.

Abstract

Background: The incidence of obesity in Bandung City is rising. The prevalence of obesity among women surpasses that of men, with a notable rise observed in the young adult demographic. Objectives: This study assessed the nutritional status, dietary habits, physical activity, health history, and phenotype of young obese women in Bandung City. Methods: This mixed-method design involved 88 obese individuals (body fat percentage >35%) aged 18-25 years of Sundanese ethnicity. The research was carried out from August to November 2023. The obtained data encompassed general subject characteristics, anthropometric measurements, body composition, dietary intake and physical activity information, health history, and phenotypic data. Comprehensive interviews were performed concerning dietary habits, physical activity, phenotypic history, nutritional status, and health history. Results: The participants' average age and body weight were 20.3 years and 81.5 kilograms, respectively. The average total fat percentage (%BF) was 38.3%. Occupation (p-value=0.033), weight (p-value=0.001), body mass index (p-value=0.001), waist circumference (p-value=0.001), hip circumference (p-value=0.001), visceral fat (p-value=0.001), resting metabolism (p-value=0.001), and energy (p-value=0.009), fat (p-value=0.043), and carbohydrate (p-value=0.021) intake were associated with total body fat. Conversely, the subject's physical activity, personal and familial history of chronic diseases, development of obesity, and parental obesity history exhibited no correlation with the subject's total body fat (p-value≥0.05). Conclusions: The subject’s occupation, body weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumference, visceral fat, resting metabolism, energy, fat, and carbohydrate intake were correlated with the subject's total body fat.

Abstract

Latihan yang berat serta asupan zat gizi yang kurang optimal dapat memberikan stress fisik pada tubuh atlet sepakbola, hal ini dapat meningkatkan risiko cedera dan gangguan kesehatan. Kandungan zat gizi buah semangka merah dan buah naga merah seperti elektrolit, sitrulin maupun antioksidan diyakini memiliki efek ergogenik dalam membantu meningkatkan daya tahan otot, proses pemulihan maupun mencegah terjadinya stress oksidatif pada atlet. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis pengaruh jus kombinasi buah semangka merah dan buah naga merah terhadap VO2max, jumlah leukosit dan pemulihan denyut nadi atlet sepakbola. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuasi eksperimental dengan rancangan non-randomized with control group pretest-posttest. Populasi penelitian adalah atlet sepakbola SMA Negeri Olahraga Tadulako yang berjumlah 23 orang dengan jenis intervensi berupa pemberian jus segam selama 14 hari. Teknik pengumpulan data VO2max menggunakan metode beep test, jumlah leukosit menggunakan hematology analyzer dan denyut nadi pemulihan menggunakan tensimeter digital dengan tiga waktu pengukuran yakni menit ke-1, menit ke-3, dan menit ke-5. Analisis data menggunakan uji beda dengan bantuan SPSS. Hasil penelitian menunjukan terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan nilai VO2max antar kelompok dengan peningkatan yang dialami oleh subjek kelompok SG (p-value=0.002). Jumlah leukosit subjek pada kedua kelompok mengalami penurunan setelah intervensi dilakukan, namun tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antar kelompok (p-value=0.878). Kelompok SG mengalami penurunan denyut nadi secara konsisten pada ketiga waktu pengukuran dengan perbedaan yang signifikan antar kelompok pada menit ke-1 (p-value=0,017) dan menit ke-5 (p-value=0,007). Sehingga, jus segam memberikan pengaruh terhadap peningkatan nilai VO2max dan pemulihan denyut nadi atlet sepakbola, namun tidak memberikan pengaruh terhadap jumlah leukosit setelah aktivitas fisik maksimal.

Abstract

Background : Obesity is a significant global health issue, contributing to the prevalence of chronic diseases. Genetic factors such as the Fat-Mass Obesity-Associated (FTO) gene, particularly the rs9939609 variant, have been linked to increased susceptibility to obesity. Objective : This study examines the relationship between FTO rs9939609 genotypes (TT and AA/TA) and body composition, as well as markers of inflammation, in obese individuals. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : Using a cross-sectional design, 38 obese young women aged 18-25 years from Bandung City were included. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and blood samples were analyzed for interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and adiponectin (ADP) levels. Results : The findings indicate that the AA/TA variant group showed lower mean values for weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, visceral fat, fat percentage, resting metabolic rate, and subcutaneous fat than the TT group; however, these differences were not statistically significant. Additionally, the AA/TA group displayed slightly higher waist-to-hip ratios and skeletal muscle percentages, although these differences were also non-significant. These results contrast with previous studies, suggesting the influence of the FTO gene on obesity may vary based on population and other contributing factors. No significant differences in body composition or biochemical markers were observed between the FTO rs9939609 genotypes. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : The limited sample size and focus on a single demographic may have impacted the findings. Future research should involve a larger and more diverse sample, including individuals with various nutritional statuses, to enhance comparison and increase the reliability of the results.

Abstract

Pemenuhan zat gizi yang optimal bagi anak sekolah sepak bola untuk menunjang kebugaran dan ketahanan fisik. Pemanfaatan sumber pangan lokal seperti ikan layang (Decapterus sp) dan tuna yang melimpah di perairan Maluku Utara, menawarkan potensi besar dalam pengembangan kudapan bergizi. Penelitian bertujuan untuk menghasilkan formula, mengevaluasi mutu organoleptik, dan menganalisis kandungan gizi kudapan berbahan ikan layang dan hati tuna. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga jenis tepung (tapioca, tepung sagu dan tepung maizena) dengan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL). Sebanyak 30 panelis agak terlatih dilibatkan dalam pengujian organoleptik. Produk kudapan terpilih, dianalisis kandungan protein total, asam amino, lemak total, karbohidrat, dan zat besi. Data diolah menggunakan Microsoft Excel dan IBM SPSS versi 25. Uji Kruskal-Wallis untuk analisis mutu organoleptik dari tiga formula. Uji Kruskal-Wallis menunjukkan tidak ada perbedaan signifikan pada warna kudapan (p>0,05), namun terdapat perbedaan signifikan pada aroma, rasa, dan tekstur di antara tiga perlakuan tepung (p<0,05). Kudapan terpilih mengandung 18,29% karbohidrat, 7,64% lemak, 18,68 gram protein, 216,66 kkal energi, dan 3,49 mg zat besi per 100 gram. Asam amino esensial didominasi oleh lysine, valine, dan isoleucine. Formula satu dengan tepung tapioka menjadi pilihan terbaik berdasarkan penerimaan panelis terhadap rasa, warna, tekstur, dan aroma. Kebaruan dari kudapat ini terletak pada penambahan hati tuna untuk meningkatkan zat besi. Kandungan sumber protein dan zat besi mendukung pemenuhan kecukupan gizi bagi anak sekola sepak bola. 100 gram kudapan mendukung 26,62% protein dan 29,08 % zat besi dalam pemenuhan kecukupan gizi harian anak sekolah sepak bola usia 13-15 tahun.

Abstract

Prevalensi penyakit degeneratif dari tahun ke tahun meningkat akibat perubahan gaya hidup, khususnya perubahan pola makan. Walaupun tempe sebagai makanan tradisional Indonesia yang banyak dikonsumsi masyarakat karena mudah diperoleh dan harga terjangkau, tidak banyak yang mengetahui manfaat tempe bagi kesehatan. Tempe lama dikenal sebagai sumber protein yang dikonsumsi oleh kalangan masyarakat berpenghasilan rendah. Kajian lebih mendalam mengenai kandungan gizi dan manfaat tempe dan bagi kesehatan, khusus sebagai pencegah penyakit degeneratif perlu dilakukan. Proses fermentasi kedelai menjadi tempe mengakibatkan perubahan zat gizi dan non gizi yang mengakibatkan manfaat tempe jauh lebih baik dibandingkan kedelai. Protein tempe lebih mudah di cerna tubuh, sedangkan asam amino arginin yang meningkat hampir dua kali lipat pada tempe, sangat tinggi manfaatnya bagi kesehatan terutama dalam memperbaiki profil lipid dan diabetes mellitus. Mempertimbangkan hal tersebut tempe dapat dipertimbangkan sebagai pangan fungsional yang bermanfaat bagi kesehatan. Degenerative diseases prevalence had been arining over years. One of the causes is the life style changes including eating pattern. Tempeh, an Indonesian soybean traditionally fermented food, was known and consumed by almost all Indonesian people. However, only a few know the health benefit of tempeh. Tempeh was also well known and cheap protein source food affordable for the poor. Hence, there is a need to explore the nutritious content of tempeh and health benefit of it deeper such as in preventing degenerative diseases. Fermentation process of soybean to become tempeh had improved nutrient and non-nutrient contents that make tempeh better than soybean. Tempeh protein is more digestible than soybean and the arginine content increases twice, that could improve lipid profile and diabetes mellitus. Tempeh could be considered as functional food having health benefit.

Abstract

Calcium is believed to play a role in growth, especially in children under five, and contributes to malnutrition issues in Indonesia. However, national-scale data are very limited to delve deeper into this matter. The study aims to examine the calcium status of children in Indonesia and their nutritional status, including stunting and underweight. A cross-sectional study design using secondary data from the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) and Study of Nutrition Status of Children Under Five and School-Aged Children 2021, including serum calcium concentration data and anthropometric measurements of body length and body weight. The study subjects were children aged 0-59 months, totaling 550 samples. The study results show the mean value of calcium concentration was 10.00±1.10 mg/dL. As many as 8.2 percent of children experienced deficiency with calcium concentration <9.0 mg/dL. The proportion of stunted and underweight children was 23.27 percent and 9.82 percent, respectively. The average calcium concentration in stunted and underweight children was not significantly different from the normal scores of HAZ and BAZ in children. Calcium status, along with factors such as age and sex, did not show a relationship with nutritional status indicators like height-for-age (HAZ) and weight-for-age (WAZ). Although the prevalence of calcium deficiency among toddlers in Indonesia is relatively low, there are still children with calcium concentrations significantly below the normal range. Further studies are needed to figure out the contribution of calcium to children's growth.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh pemberian ekstrak etanol daun pegagan terhadap gambaran darah dan peningkatan fungsi kognitif pada tikus. Penelitian ini menggunakan 16 ekor tikus Wistar jantan, dibagi secara acak ke dalam 4 kelompok dan masing-masing diberi ekstrak etanol daun pegagan setiap hari dengan level 0, 100, 300, dan 600 mg ekstrak/kg bobot badan selama 8 minggu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak pada level 300 mg/kg bobot badan meningkatkan nilai packed cell volume (PCV), sel darah merah (SDM), dan nilai hemoglobin (Hb). Pengamatan aktivitas pada kelompok dengan level 300 dan 600 mg/kg bobot badan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan dibandingkan kelompok kontrol (P0,05). Pemberian ekstrak etanol daun pegagan juga berperan dalam meningkatkan keberhasilan pengenalan lorong target. Hasil di atas mengindikasikan dengan kuat bahwa ekstrak pegagan mempunyai peran penting dalam perbaikan profil hematologi dan meningkatkan fungsi kognitif.

Abstract

Background: One of the target groups at risk of becoming overweight and obese is teenagers. East Kalimantan is one of the largest provinces in Indonesia with a prevalence of overweight and obesity in children aged 13-15 years with a body massa indeks for age ( BMI/A)  indicator of 19.1% in 2018, where overweight was 12.0% and obesity was 7.1%. Objectives: To analyze the factors that influence nutritional status in overweight and obese adolescents aged 11-15 years. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey conducted at State Junior High Schools in Samarinda City from January to March 2021. The sample size was 290 students, determined using the Lemeshow and David formula, and selected through simple random sampling. Data collection includes the characteristics of the subject and their parents, measurement of body weight and height, food consumption, nutritional behavior, physical activity, and exercise habits using interviews using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Logistic Regression test. Results: There are differences in the nutritional status of boys and girls (p=0.006), mother's education and occupation (p=0.007; p=0.007), father's and mother's nutritional status (p=0.001; p=0.014), exercise habits (p=0.009), protein adequacy level (p=0.000), and fat adequacy level (p=0.016). Conclusions: Gender, occupation, education, nutritional status, eating habits, exercise habits, level of protein adequacy, and level of fat adequacy influence the occurrence of overweight and obesity in adolescents. It is necessary to increase sports activities which must be done at least 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes intensively and get used to consuming 3-4 portions of vegetables and fruit daily, as well as paying attention to appropriate meal portions.

ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Jawa Barat merupakan provinsi dengan jumlah populasi balita tertinggi di Indonesia. Permasalahan gizi di Jawa Barat masih tinggi. Berdasarkan Studi Status Gizi Indonesia (SSGI) tahun 2021 prevalensi stunting, wasting dan underweight di Jawa Barat yaitu 20.5%. 5.3% dan 15%. Faktor risiko yang mempengaruhi kekurangan gizi beragam dan berpotensi berubah dari waktu ke waktu. Oleh karena itu, sangat penting untuk menilai arus status gizi untuk meninjau kesenjangan dalam faktor risiko.Tujuan: Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis faktor risiko stunting, wasting, dan underweight pada baduta di Jawa Barat. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan studi cross sectional menggunakan data sekunder dari Studi Status Gizi Indonesia (SSGI) 2021 yang terdiri dari 1203 subjek baduta usia 6-23 bulan di Jawa Barat. Faktor risiko stunting, wasting, dan underweight dianalisis menggunakan regresi logistik. Hasil: Prevalensi stunting, wasting, dan underweight pada baduta usia 6-23 bulan berturut-turut sebesar 20.5%, 5.7% dan 11.6%. Faktor risiko stunting adalah usia 12-23 bulan (AOR=3.10 CI 95% 2.16-4.45), panjang lahir pendek (AOR=1.85 CI 95% 1.30-2.62), tingkat pendidikan ibu rendah (AOR=1.97 CI 95% 1.45-2.68) dan tidak menyusui (AOR= 0.46 CI 95% 0.31-0.68) sebagai faktor protektif. Faktor risiko wasting adalah tingkat pendidikan Ibu yang rendah (AOR=0.5 CI 95% 0.34-0.94) sebagai faktor protektif. Faktor risiko underweight adalah usia 12-23 bulan (OR=1.92 CI 95% 1.25-2.95) dan tidak ASI eksklusif (AOR=0.54 CI 95% 0.35-0.83) sebagai faktor protektif. Kesimpulan: Faktor yang memengaruhi stunting yaitu usia, panjang lahir, tingkat pendidikan ibu, dan status menyusui. Faktor yang memengaruhi wasting yaitu tingkat pendidikan ibu. Conclusions: Influential factors to stunting are age, birth length, mother's education level, and breastfeeding status. Factor influences wasting is the education level of the mother.
