Abstract

Virtual Reality (VR) has come to a point for more authentic learning as it provides opportunities for learners to visit various places or objects they cannot physically see and do because of school and home boundaries. A preliminary observation and interview were conducted to disclose the teachers’ views on the use of the previously released Animals of Nusantara (AoN) VR application implemented in public and private schools in North Bali, Indonesia. They admitted to be somewhat familiar with the application after several trial attempts. Despite the positive learning supports, the teachers also faced problems in implementing this authentic learning media in the English instruction in the metaverse era. This situation led to the development of VR for English Learning handbook to fulfill teachers’ queries on adequate information about authentic media, tutorials on using AoN VR application, and meaningful learning activity ideas. ADDIE model was employed as the research design. Instruments used include an interview guide, a checklist, and expert judgments’ evaluation sheet. All gathered data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. It was found that this handbook is as excellent media to assist teachers in teaching English in secondary school level, meaning that the book can be one potential learning resource for English instruction in the metaverse era. It is suggested that the teachers to utilize this handbook to implement authentic learning in the class projects while delving into interesting information provided by the VR application.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in a sixth-grade classroom at a public primary school in Singaraja. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students. The findings reveal that SRL strategies, including goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-reflection, empower students to become active participants in their education. Teachers played a vital role in fostering these practices through scaffolding and guidance, while group activities promoted collaboration and critical thinking. Independent material selection was observed to enhance engagement, critical thinking, and digital literacy, aligning with modern educational frameworks like Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar initiative. However, challenges such as varying levels of student readiness, limited research skills, and insufficient familiarity with digital tools were noted, highlighting the need for structured teacher support. The study emphasizes the importance of balancing independence and guidance to maximize SRL’s benefits, preparing students for lifelong learning and adaptability in dynamic educational contexts.

Abstract

This systematic literature review aimed to explore the impact of massive technology use on the reading habits of students in Indonesia, with a focus on the impact of digital media on their reading behavior. This review covers studies from 2019 to 2024, a period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to digital learning environments. The findings show that reading habits among Indonesian students are generally low in various regions, including Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. The widespread use of smartphones and computers for entertainment purposes, such as gaming, social media, and video streaming, has significantly reduced the time spent reading traditional or academic material. Although technology offers extensive access to educational resources, the dominant use of technology for recreational activities hinders the development of strong reading habits. This research shows that students' reading habits in Indonesia tend to be low and are influenced by the use of technology, especially smartphones and computers, which are more often used for entertainment than reading. Awareness and self-control in using technology are the keys so that students can utilize technology to improve their reading habits, so that technology can become a useful tool rather than an obstacle in the learning process.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the effect of implementing game-based learning on increasing student motivation in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). By analyzing eleven relevant articles published between 2017 and 2024, this review identifies the effects of implementing game-based learning. Game-based Learning as an effective strategy for increasing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' motivation and learning outcomes. The findings show that Game-based Learning significantly increases student motivation, besides that game-based learning can also improve student vocabulary and academic results. Game-based learning has also been shown to reduce anxiety and support collaborative learning, strengthen relationships between students and teachers, and increase student engagement in learning. Further recommendations for future research in the application of game-based learning should focus on optimizing Game-based Learning for various learning contexts, effective types of games, duration of use, and integration with traditional methods, as well as developing training programs for teachers.

Abstract

Students in EFL countries like Indonesia are nowadays expected to have good English proficiency. Even though traditional classroom activities play an important role, it cannot be denied that learning activities outside the classroom also play a significant role. These activities, known as extramural English (EE) learning, can provide additional opportunities for language practice and exposure. This study used Systematic Literature Review (SLR) in order to examine the influence of EE towards EFL secondary school students. The PRISMA method was used to filter the articles to be reviewed, and from this, around 16 studies were selected that matched the inclusions and criteria. The results show that EE does indeed increase students' overall English language skills. Moreover, the implementation of EE can also increase students’ motivation level due to its fun, engaging, and supportive environment, which will later improve the learning outcomes obtained by students.

Abstract

The purpose of incorporating digital learning materials into vocational school English instruction is to assist students in acquiring specific competencies. Additionally, prepared digital learning materials are intended to assist teachers in developing instructional materials that follow the principles of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in vocational high schools (SMK). The research used the qualitative research and development (R&D) method. The stages of developing this teaching material model are adapted from Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel's 4Ds model (1974), which consists of four stages: define, design, develop, and disseminate. As data sources, the participants were two teachers from two different vocational schools with a combined enrolment of 115 students. This research's results are a model for developing digital-based teaching materials (prepared digital learning materials). Furthermore, it was discovered that using the prepared digital learning materials greatly aided teachers in teaching English to achieve specific competencies. From the students' perspective, they admitted that it was also exciting because they perceived learning as distinct from traditional   learning materials due to digital materials usage.

Abstract

There are challenges in students' speaking skills in Indonesia. These speaking problems are influenced by anxiety, difficulty in understanding, and language problems caused by lack of speaking practice. In the digital or modern era technology is possible to use as media for learning English. This study aims to analyze the effect of using Google Voice Assistant (GVA) on students' speaking skills. This study uses a mixed method of explanatory sequential with quantitative using quasi-experimental and qualitative by conducting interviews. The data sample was 10th grade students of vocational schools with experimental groups and control groups with 22 students in each group. Data were collected from pre-test and post-test. Based on statistical data analysis using SPSS, sig. (2-tailed is 0.096) was found which is higher than 0.005 meaning there is no significant effect. Interview data using the RASE model showed that students admitted that GVA was interesting as a speaking practice partner, but could not cover all aspects that could help students improve their speaking skills because of the familiarity principle which they were not familiar with, comprehensive assistance in providing materials, and lack of evaluative ability for their speaking skills. It can be said that GVA does not have a significant effect but can be developed as a pedagogical agent.
