Abstract

English instruction has been claimed to be challenging for some non-native students and with the addition of online environment, unpreprared students may experience anxiety, fear, or stress. This article aimed to analyse students’ anxiety across various school levels and explore their views from the anxiety components in EFL online instruction in Indonesia. Framed within a mixed methods research design, this study employed a large-scale survey of 928 students and an interview with 10 voluntary respondents. Data were collected using means of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCAS) questionnaire and an interview guide. Using the validity check, 30 survey items were valid with a good fit (α=.89). Data from the questionnaire responses were analysed using SPSS to find frequencies of the respondents’ anxiety scores and categorized using Oetting’s Scale and the data from the interview transcripts were analysed using Interactive Model Analysis. The result showed students in various school levels were mildly anxious during the EFL online instruction. This means that students might be potentially anxious due to dynamic online learning situations when they attend their EFL instructions. Meanwhile, the interview revealed that they were anxious when having an English test and experiencing connection problems during online learning. They overcame them by learning the materials more and communicating their connectivity situations with the teachers. Teachers and policy makers should consider providing learning supports to deal with students’ anxiety in the virtual learning context.

Abstract

In online learning, students are likely to experience boredom, lack of motivation, reluctance, and anxiety. Bitmoji Virtual Classroom (BVC) – a virtual classroom can be one option in implementing interactive learning. This study aims to investigate the experiences of English teachers in designing interesting and interactive English learning using Bitmoji Virtual Classroom (BVC) – a virtual classroom designed as a digital avatar-based learning agent in online learning – to increase students’ interest, engagement, and motivation to learn. Using a narrative inquiry approach, this study explores the experiences of four junior high school English teachers who voluntarily participated. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings show that teachers find the process of designing virtual classrooms enjoyable, aided by the attractive features of Bitmoji and Google Slides. They support the creation of effective learning and better student engagement through the help of this interactive learning media. However, they face challenges, such as the need for clearer learning guidelines during the implementation of the interactive media used. This study suggests that the use of avatar-based virtual classrooms can serve as an innovative strategy to develop creativity and increase student motivation in a virtual English learning environment.

Abstract

English language competency is crucial for success in the classroom and in the workplace in today's worldwide society. This study examines how sixth-grade students at SD N 1 Baktiseraga can improve their English pronunciation skills by using the CAKE application, a mobile-assisted language learning tool. Utilizing Classroom Action Research (CAR) over two cycles, this research involved 25 students and aimed to improve pronunciation through interactive and interesting technological methods. Initial observations indicated low levels of engagement and pronunciation challenges among students. This intervention involves a learning plan that incorporates the CAKE application, with a focus on everyday conversations and practical speaking exercises. Data collection includes pre-test and post-test to measure progress as well as observation data to assess student participation and engagement. The results showed significant improvements in students' pronunciation skills and increased class participation. Uniformity of pronunciation abilities among students also increased, indicating reduced variation in skills. This research shows the effectiveness of integrating mobile technology into language education, highlighting the role of the CAKE app in improving student pronunciation and engagement. These findings suggest that such technological tools can significantly improve language learning outcomes and should be considered for wider educational use.

Abstract

Facilitation strategies provided in asynchronous online discussion environment becomes essential aspects in learning. This present study was a case study aimed at exploring EFL students’ perception on facilitation strategies provided in asynchronous online discussion in terms of monitoring, feedback and scoring rubric implemented in the online discussion. Questionnaire was administered to one hundred students and interview was conducted to six voluntary students who were enrolled in courses with asynchronous online discussion. The result indicated that students’ perception on the facilitation strategies provided in asynchronous online discussion was neutral which indicated that facilitation provided by teachers did not become the main preference for the students in asynchronous online discussion. Students perceived teachers’ monitoring positively since the students need more guidances to understand the concept as well as to indicate that their participation is apprecited by the teachers. Meanwhile, students had neutral perception toward feedback and scoring rubric provided in asynchronous online discussion. They perceived that feedback and scoring rubric are not essential elements that influence their participation in asynchronous online discussion. Furthermore, it implied that the facilitation strategies provided in asynchronous online discussion has to enable teacher to check students progress and to motivate students to engage in asynchronous online discussion.

Abstract

As the 21st century progresses, there is a growing emphasis on equipping students with essential skills, including writing, which is considered crucial to master. Online writing has become particularly significant in fostering this skill, as advanced technology enhances classroom activities and creates new opportunities for interaction between lecturers and students. This study aimed to assess the levels of six types of interaction, identify the forms of interaction students value most, determine the forms most frequently conducted by lecturers, and explore the benefits of these interactions in an online writing course. This study utilized a sequential explanatory design involving 122 respondents. Data were collected using two research instruments: a questionnaire and interviews. The findings revealed that respondents demonstrated two preferences for a high level of interaction, both of which showed a notable increase in the six forms of interaction. Among these, four types of interaction were perceived by students as playing a critical role in their online writing activities. However, only three forms of interaction were identified as being frequently implemented by the lecturer, reflecting an emphasis on student-centred learning. Each type of interaction was acknowledged as contributing distinct benefits to the students. This study underlines the importance of adopting diverse and student-centred interactions in online writing courses to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Learning on twenty first century has influenced the use of technology especially as contextual learning media in the classroom. Moreover, digital generation students have already known the role of technology and have adapted it successfully. Therefore, it was very important to introduce attractive and active learning by using authentic activities and one of these activities was called Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). This learning brought the world’s information only to the students’ smart phone. In contrast to traditional learning in the classroom, the students did not fully gain knowledge in the classroom. In fact, the implementation of MALL could give students’ freedom to learn in terms of time and place. The result of this research showed that students had obstacles in learning especially in terms of activities and the used of teaching media. Students needed authentic learning media that could improve their four skills.
