Abstract

Abstract

Peningkatan aktivitas industri menyebabkan pencemaran, termasuk kontaminasi logam berat seperti timbal (Pb).

Abstract

Waste is a classic problem for developing countries like Indonesia. Coastal areas are one of the areas that most vulnerable to environmental problems, especially those related to plastic waste. This community service activity aims to increase community knowledge about the importance of waste management and encourage them to turn waste into handicraft products that have economic value. This community service activity is in partnership with the community in the Keputih coastal area and local community leaders in RT VII RW VIII Keputih. The method used is to provide counseling, training and assistance to the community. Evaluation of activities is carried out by assessing: 1) knowledge about waste (inorganic and organic that is difficult to decompose) through pre-test and post-test regarding educational materials, 2) assessment of the ability to practice waste management (crafting) and 3) Impact of activities is carried out by reviewing Has waste management been implemented from households to TPS? The education and assistance on waste management, including sorting and making handicrafts from waste, has been successful with 3 indicators achieved, namely the presence of the community in counseling (80%), 65% of the target community has increased their knowledge, and 75% of the target community has sorted waste and made crafts from plastic waste. It is hoped that community service activities can be sustainable, such as providing education to target communities regarding how to sell handicrafts made from waste, and collaborating with other parties that can improve the branding of handicraft products.

Abstract

Background: Inadequate sanitation is a key contributor to the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, skin infections, and acute respiratory infections (ARI), particularly in rural areas like Pendung Tengah Village, Kerinci Regency. Limited knowledge and unfavorable attitudes toward hygiene exacerbate these conditions. Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) education on improving knowledge and attitudes. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of STBM education in enhancing sanitation-related awareness and behavior among housewives. Method: A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted involving 30 randomly selected housewives, using a structured questionnaire and paired t-test analysis. Result: Significant increases were observed in knowledge (from 6.10 to 9.00) and attitudes (from 7.23 to 9.13), with a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05). Conclusion: STBM education effectively improves sanitation knowledge and attitudes, though sustained efforts are needed for long-term impact. The study hypothesizes that STBM education significantly enhances household sanitation behavior. The novelty lies in empowering rural housewives as key agents of change, showing that targeted, behaviorbased education can be impactful and scalable in low-resource settings.

Abstract

Indonesia has the third highest prevalence of stunting in Southeast Asia. One of the main factors is poor environmental hygiene and sanitation, which causes infections and impaired nutrient absorption in children under five. Inadequate sanitation and poor water quality increase the risk of stunting. In Silir Village, Wates Sub-district, there were 18 cases of stunting in December 2023. To address this, a holistic approach is needed, including the implementation of the 5 Pillars of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM). The community service was conducted in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Activities included water quality checks (all water samples contained E.coli), hygiene education, sanitation inspections, and assistance with water, waste, and liquid waste management. Education related to stunting and environmental conditions was conducted, along with a pre-test and post-test that showed an increase in the average score from 69.9 to 73.1. Further intervention is needed to improve the bacteriological quality of drinking water in the homes of stunted toddlers in Silir Village.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and attacks the human respiratory system. As of 2021, the virus has spread to 226 countries, including Indonesia. East Java Province has the fourth-highest number of cases in Indonesia, while Surabaya City has the highest number of cases in East Java. This study aims to analyze the relationship between Personal hygiene, environmental conditions, individual characteristics, and mobility with COVID-19 cases in households in Gading Village, Tambaksari District, Surabaya City. This study is an observational analytic study using a case-by-case approach. Cross-sectional. The study was conducted in Gading Village, Tambaksari District, Surabaya City, from September 2022 to December 2022. The sample consisted of 85 households selected through a simple random sampling. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and observations. The results were tested using the chi-squared and Fisher's Exact Test with a significance level of 0.05. The results of the study showed that home ventilation (p=0.036) and residential density (p=0.04) had a significant relationship with COVID-19 cases in households. Meanwhile, no significant association was found with the incidence of COVID-19 in the variables of age (p=0.603), gender (p=0.405), comorbidities (p=0.924), handwashing behavior with soap (p=1.000), mask use (p=0.294), social distancing behavior (p=0.341), environmental cleanliness (p=0.414), and work/learning systems of household respondents (p=0.751). The conclusion shows that home ventilation factors and residential density have a significant relationship with cases of COVID-19 transmission. Therefore, efforts to prevent COVID-19 transmission in the household environment need to focus on improving home ventilation and reducing residential density. In addition, education regarding other risk factors is still necessary to increase public awareness in maintaining overall health and environmental cleanliness.
