Abstract

Critical thinking skills and learning motivation exist in every student, but each individual possesses them at different levels. The aim of this study is to examine the correlation between the application of problem-based learning in science lessons—specifically on the topics of vibration, waves, and sound—and students' critical thinking skills and learning motivation. This research employed a one-shot case study design, which is a type of pre-experimental research. The sample consisted of 35 eighth-grade students from class VIII G at MTsN 1 Kota Serang. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and data were collected using tests. The result of the study indicate that: (1) based on the assessment of four aspects of students’ critical thinking skills, 27 students were categorized as very high and 8 students as high; (2) based on six aspects of learning motivation, 1 student was categorized as moderate, 22 students as high, and 12 students as very high; (3) the correlation between critical thinking skills and learning motivation through the ethnoscience-integrated problem-based learning model was 70.1%, with the calculated r-value exceeding the table r-value at a significance level of 0.05.The conclusion of this study is that students’ learning motivation and critical thinking skills through ethnoscience-integrated problem-based learning are strongly correlated.

Abstract

This study integrates AI-augmented qualitative analysis into an applied-ethnographic reconstruction of Dayak Tomun tuak fermentation to address the lack of curriculum-ready, place-based chemistry materials. Fieldwork in Arut Selatan, Central Kalimantan (August 2024–January 2025) engaged two participants (one brewer, one customary leader) through structured observation, semi-structured narrative interviews, and audiovisual documentation under inclusion criteria of ≥10 years’ practice and consistent use of traditional methods. Within Google Colab, ChatGPT assisted transcript segmentation and first-pass open–axial–selective coding; researchers verified all outputs line by line and iteratively refined a codebook with an audit trail. Findings clarify a two-stage process: glutinous-rice tapai for approximately 2–3 days followed by fermentation of a cooled sugar-and-spice infusion for approximately 4–5 days. Three controls consistently mattered: cooling to hand-warm (≤35 °C) before inoculation, tightly sealed vessels for defined durations, and spice infusion (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, long pepper, black pepper) for flavor and perceived “cleanliness.” Sensory shift from sweet to bitter aligned with community assessments of progress; sociocultural boundaries (acid exclusion, restricted access, optional kapur sirih markings) co-occurred with empirical controls. We provide four curriculum-aligned exemplars for Grades 10–11: stoichiometry and reaction progress with simulated sucrose musts; anaerobiosis and gas balance via sealed-jar CO₂ capture; phenolic antioxidant assays (DPPH) using culinary spices with safety notes; and pH-shift demonstrations framed by the acid-exclusion hypothesis. Limitations include no instrumental ABV, pH, or microbiome data; pathway figures are interpretive. Future work should prioritize spot pH/Brix and hydrometer ABV, along with microbiome–metabolome mapping to strengthen the scientific and educational bridge.

Abstract

This study evaluates the questioning skills of chemistry teachers during microteaching using an AI-assisted assessment rubric. A total of 200 publicly available YouTube videos (2019–2024) were selected using defined criteria: chemistry instruction, teacher–student questioning, Indonesian language, minimum audio clarity of 45 dB, and at least 5 minutes in duration. All videos featured pre-service teachers. Transcripts were generated using Otter.ai and segmented into discrete questioning episodes. Evaluation was performed using Gemini Flash 2.0 (build: 2025.03, temperature: 0.0), a large language model configured via prompt design and anchored exemplars to assess six pedagogical indicators: question type, content relevance, question complexity, wait time, teacher’s response, and student interaction. Each indicator was rated on a 4-point scale. Reliability checks against human-coded samples (n = 40) yielded strong agreement (Cohen’s κ = 0.78). Results showed that 25% of sessions were classified as high-performing, with open-ended and cognitively demanding questions, extended wait time, and rich student engagement. In contrast, 42% were low-performing, marked by factual recall, short pauses, and minimal interaction. Clustering analysis (Gower k-medoids) identified three distinct performance profiles (average silhouette = 0.41). This AI-based framework enables reliable, scalable, and interpretable evaluation of questioning practices. A prototype feedback tool was developed, providing per-indicator scores, question examples, and suggested improvements supporting formative teacher development. Ethical compliance was ensured through the exclusive use of public, anonymized content.

Abstract

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into education has increased interest in how digital tools can support higher-order thinking rather than simply automate tasks. Within STEAM learning, this issue is especially important because students must combine evidence, reasoning, and design decisions in authentic project work. Generative AI tools based on large language models were used in this study as learning scaffolds to assist students with keyword expansion, scientific query construction, journal abstract summarization, hypothesis development, and revision of written explanations. The study examined whether such AI-supported learning improved students’ critical thinking during a STEAM microcontroller media-design project. Two intact classes completed the same project workflow: one class used AI support, while the other completed the project without AI. Student performance was evaluated using a five-dimension critical-thinking rubric covering information and keywords, concepts and logic, journal abstract interpretation, hypothesis and reasoning, and academic formatting and compliance. Results showed that the AI-supported class performed better overall, scoring about five points higher on average and showing a large overall advantage. Improvements appeared across all rubric dimensions, with the strongest gains found in journal abstract interpretation and hypothesis and reasoning, suggesting that AI was most helpful when students had to interpret evidence, connect ideas, and justify decisions. The weakest-link bottleneck analysis, defined as the rubric dimension in which each student performed worst, showed that journal abstract interpretation remained the main constraint in both groups. These findings indicate that AI can serve as a productive scaffold for critical thinking and decision-making in STEAM projects, especially by supporting evidence use and iterative reasoning, while also highlighting the need for explicit instruction in reading and interpreting scientific abstracts.

Abstract

Scientific reasoning in chemistry involves the ability to apply conceptual knowledge in problem-solving, as well as to evaluate issues within broader social, ethical, and environmental contexts. However, conventional assessments often fail to capture this multidimensionality by reducing performance to a single final score. This study uses an integrated learning analytics approach to analyze students’ reasoning performance across two core domains of chemistry learning—applied reasoning and socio-chemical reasoning. A quantitative descriptive design was employed, involving 56 pre-service chemistry teachers who completed four open-ended essay questions, two in each reasoning domain. Student responses were scored using an analytical rubric assessing conceptual accuracy, logical coherence, and justification relevance. Data were analyzed using single-domain and multicomponent strategies, including quadrant profiling, trajectory mapping, clustering, and distribution analysis. Visual tools such as radar charts, spaghetti plots, contour density plots, and alluvial diagrams were used to depict students’ reasoning profiles. Results revealed that most students demonstrated moderate reasoning abilities, although notable inconsistencies were observed between the domains. Individual trajectories exhibited non-linear variations, highlighting diverse cognitive patterns. Clustering and heatmaps indicated distinct learner segments, while alluvial diagrams illustrated transitions between reasoning levels across domains. These findings suggest that students’ reasoning abilities are varied and dynamic. It is concluded that chemistry reasoning is multidimensional and should be assessed through integrated, data-driven methods. The study recommends the adoption of formative, analytics-supported assessments to inform differentiated instruction and promote deeper conceptual and ethical engagement in chemistry education.

Abstract

This study analyzes traditional granulated palm sugar (gula semut) production as an ethno-chemical system for contextual carbohydrate food chemistry learning through an AI-assisted applied ethnographic approach. Public YouTube videos and short online news features were treated as mediated field sites. From more than 200 sources, 53 eligible videos were selected and transcribed through a systematic data-processing workflow. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s interactive model and Strauss and Corbin’s open–axial–selective coding, supported by a large language model to identify recurring practices and relate them to underlying chemical mechanisms. Four production stages were reconstructed, covering sap collection and initial processing, heating–concentration–early crystallization, crystallization and granulation, and drying–stabilization–packaging. The heating, concentration, and early crystallization stage emerged as the central physicochemical control window, where producers regulate fire intensity, foam behavior, evaporation, viscosity, color, and aroma to control concentration increase, boiling-point elevation, non-enzymatic browning, and the approach to supersaturation. Environmental conditions, fuel choice, cleanliness, and informal pH boundaries also function as additional control layers influencing product quality. The study generates practice-to-concept evidence maps and exemplar learning activities aligned with curriculum topics such as colligative properties, thermochemistry, reaction rates, and physical versus chemical change. These findings suggest that ethno-chemical reconstruction can support culturally grounded chemistry education by transforming local production practices into scientifically meaningful and pedagogically usable learning contexts
