Abstract

Reasoning ability is a high-level thinking ability in learning mathematics. Mathematical reasoning and mathematics learning are two things that are interrelated and cannot be separated because mathematical material is understood through reasoning, and reasoning can be trained through studying mathematics. To achieve mathematical reasoning abilities in learning, students need adequate behavior, one of which is learning independence. The aim of this research is to analyze mathematical reasoning abilities based on students' independent learning at SMPN 1 Praya Timur on straight line equations. The method used in this research is qualitative research with descriptive methods. The samples in this study were taken randomly based on the class in the population. The class that the researcher took as a sample in this study was class VIII C at SMPN 1 Praya Timur for the 2023–2024 academic year. The results of this study show that subjects with low reasoning abilities are also categorized as having low learning independence. The learning ability of students who are categorized as moderate turns out to be moderate. So, it can be concluded that the relationship between learning independence and reasoning ability is based on high student learning independence, so their reasoning ability is also high. Based on the results of this research, it is hoped that teachers can develop teaching and practice problem-solving questions to improve students' reasoning abilities

Abstract

Abstract: Problem-solving in mathematics is a fundamental skill that must be mastered by individuals. However, previous research indicates that students' problem-solving abilities tend to be moderate to low. Many factors contribute to this, including the factor of number sense ability. The objective of this study is to describe how number sense and problem-solving skills are used by mathematics education students with low number sense ability in solving linear programming problems using the simplex method. This research is qualitative descriptive involving 36 third-year mathematics education students as participants. Subjects were selected using purposive sampling technique based on a number sense ability test to identify those with low number sense ability. Participants were given an advanced test involving linear programming problems solved using the simplex method. The results indicate that mathematics education students with low number sense ability struggle to solve problems accurately. Stages of problem-solving that were not performed effectively included gathering information, planning, and implementing the plan. Furthermore, students did not engage in the reviewing stage. Moreover, students were not flexible in manipulating numbers, especially when dealing with large numbers. As a result, more time was required for computations, and the iteration process in the simplex method could not be effectively completed.        Keywords: linear programming, number sense, number sense ability, problem solving, simplex method.DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i1.pp103-115

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the ability of mathematical problem solving on number pattern subjects in terms of the conceptual tempo and cognitive style of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 11 Mataram. The type of research is descriptive-qualitative. The instruments used are the Matching Familiar Figure Test, the math problem-solving ability test, and interview guidelines. Data collection methods include cognitive style tests, math problem-solving ability tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Indicators of Krulik and Rudnick problem-solving stages are reading and thinking, exploring and planning, selecting a strategy, finding answers, reflecting, and developing. The results showed that students with fast, accurate, and reflective cognitive styles were able to fulfill five indicators of the Krulik and Rudnick problem-solving stages. Reflective students allocate time appropriately and thoroughly in solving problems compared to fast-accurate students, so that the answers given by reflective students are more accurate than those given by fast-accurate students. Students with an impulsive cognitive style are able to run four indicators, while slow inaccurate students are able to run three indicators of Krulik and Rudnick. Slowly inaccurate students take a long time and are less thorough than impulsive students, so the answers given by slow inaccurate students are less accurate than those given by impulsive students.
