Abstract

The caffeine assay can be developed by using sensitive reagents for caffeine detection, such as sodium periodate (NaIO4), acetic acid (CH3COOH), and 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone (MBTH) inside 96-microwell plate. The addition of caffeine solution could change the color of the reagent from white to deep blue which can be then scanned and quantified by a flatbed scanner and the color image analysis program, known as the scanometric method. Analytical characterization such as linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision, accuracy, and stability of the developed method was established by using caffeine standard. The result of caffeine analysis using the developed method agreed with that of the spectrophotometric method, suggesting that the developed method can be used as an alternative method for caffeine assay in pharmaceutical preparations.

Abstract

The problem in this research is the low level of student independence caused by students' lack of awareness of independent learning. In learning, it can be seen that students tend to depend on friends, do not have confidence in themselves so they are embarrassed to express opinions, miss bringing books, do not have their own initiative in studying, and often disturb friends when learning. To overcome the problems, the BAIRIK (Problem Based Learning, Numbered Head Together, and Talking Stick) learning model was applied. The aim of this research is to increase student independence. This research used a type of Classroom Action Research (PTK). The results of this research show that student independence at meeting 1 reached 35% with the criteria for being less independent, increasing at meeting 4 to 95% with the criteria for being very independent. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the BAIRIK learning model can increase student independence.

Abstract

Anoxygenic Photosynthetic Bacteria (APB) has beneficial properties including as probiotic candidates, biofertilizers, bioremediation agents, and can reduce H2S concentrations in waters. However, the APB also has a weakness, slow growth. It is known that the interaction of metal ions and the exposure of magnetic fields increases enzyme activity and growth rates. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of metal ions and the exposure to magnetic fields on APB growth. The APB isolate, AM which is isolated from mangrove roots and tested for its effects on metal ions in seawater complete (SWC) media. The metal ions tested were Cu, Pb, Al and Fe with different concentrations. The metal ion is exposed to a 0.2 mT magnetic field for 10 minutes before being added to the media. The cell count results showed that both metal ions exposed and unexposed to magnetic field did not affect the growth of APB AM isolates. However, the metal ion in SWC media affects the spectra pattern of AM APB isolates.

Abstract

The increase in synthetic dye waste from the textile industry causes significant environmental pollution, prompting the need for environmentally friendly dye alternatives. One potential source is the bark of the Rhizophora mucronata mangrove tree, which is rich in tannins and phenolic compounds. This article describes the socialization and training activities on the use of mangrove bark as a natural dye in ecoprinting with an innovative combination of pounding and steaming techniques in Bintan Buyu Village, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands. The implementation methods included socialization on the basic concepts of ecoprinting, introduction to the ecological and economic potential of mangroves, and practical training on ecoprinting. The training process included mordanting fabric with alum, basic dyeing using mangrove bark decoction, leaf printing (pounding), and color fixing (steaming). The pounding technique produced clear and detailed leaf motifs, while the steaming technique increased color fastness to prevent fading. The results of the activity showed high enthusiasm among participants, as seen from their active participation in discussions, practice, and the quality of the works produced. The participants' ecoprint products featured a combination of natural brown colors with sharp and aesthetic patterns of various leaves. This activity succeeded in increasing the community's knowledge, skills, and awareness of the sustainable use of local resources. The combined pounding– steam technique has proven effective in creating environmentally friendly ecoprints with good pattern quality and color fastness, while also opening up opportunities for creative businesses based on the potential of local mangroves.

Abstract

Lebak swamp land is a type of suboptimal land with high potential for the development of national rice production, although it is highly influenced by climatic conditions and the typology of water inundation. Variations in lebak swamp land typology lead to differences in productivity, as well as in household farmers' income levels and food availability. This study aims to analyze household income sources and staple food availability among rice farmers based on the typology of lebak swamp lands (shallow, middle, and deep) in Sei Selincah Subdistrict, Kalidoni District, Palembang City. A survey method was employed using proportional stratified random sampling, involving 60 respondents. Data were analyzed quantitatively to calculate income, expenditure, and food availability. The results showed that the highest income was earned by farmers in deep swamps (IDR 27,832,049/year), followed by middle swamps (IDR 26,221,862/year), and shallow swamps (IDR 24,609,383/year). Non-agricultural income significantly contributed to household finances, particularly in shallow and middle areas. Non-rice farming activities, such as galangal cultivation, were only practiced in shallow and middle swamps. Household expenditures were primarily allocated to non-food needs, especially education and savings. Meanwhile, household food availability remains low and varies across land typologies. The highest food availability is found in the middle swamp at 443 kg/year, followed by the deep swamp at 425 kg/year, and the shallow swamp at 405 kg/year. Most of the surplus is sold to meet other household needs. These findings highlight the importance of income diversification and improving food storage capacity to enhance the economic and food security of lebak swamp rice farmers. Keywords: farmer welfare, food availability, household expenditure, household income, lebak swamp
