Abstract

This article investigates how the plot twist in Lloyd F. Loux’s A Clever Catch is done through foreshadowing. The action of foreshadowing is to introduce subconscious clues to the audience without spoiling the result. Loux’s story is about a man who has an obsession with a thief woman and intends to catch her. At last, he succeeds in catching the thief and brings her before the magistrate, but then the magistrate does not punish her but gives best wishes to both of them. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this paper underlines that the plot twist is preceded by the senses of law, starting from the thief, the accusation, the man as the detective, and the magistrate. At last, the punishment is not severe, but happy since all of the symbols eventually indicate a man who goes after a woman he loves. In conclusion, the foreshadowing in Loux’s story brings suspense and anxiety to the audience which then later presents a grateful happy ending as the plot twist.

Abstract

This research investigates the link between exposure to social media content and the interpersonal communication skills of adolescents, focusing on students at SMK Unitomo Surabaya. Employing a quantitative correlational method, data were gathered via questionnaires administered to 139 purposively selected students. The instrument underwent validity and reliability testing, confirming that all items met the necessary standards. Findings from a simple linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant and positive association between social media exposure and interpersonal communication (r = 0.672, p < 0.01). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.452) indicates that 45.2% of the variation in interpersonal communication skills can be attributed to social media exposure. These results imply that when adolescents engage with social media in a mindful and active manner—particularly on platforms like Instagram—it can positively influence their interpersonal communication development.   Keywords: Social Media Exposure, Interpersonal Communication, Adolescents, Instagram

Abstract

This study aims to understand the myth of the rat and the 'Rat Man' through their behavior in the film The Rat Catcher. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection through note-taking. The researcher watches the film and records dialogues related to the research theme. The data analysis technique is conducted by analyzing the dialogues and behaviors in The Rat Catcher1 in relation to the concept of myth within Claude Levi-Strauss's structuralism. Myths are often associated with events in society that influence customs or lifestyles of those who believe in them. Through Levi-Strauss's structuralist analysis, it was found that the failure of the Rat Man to catch the rat highlights the irony of the myth. The various methods he employs to catch the rat, ranging from ordinary to unique and even extreme, yield no results. In conclusion, the Rat Man remains trapped in an illusion that does not prove the myth he believes in, thus the myth about the rat continues to linger in his mind. The contribution of this study is to provide an understanding of how the myths of the rat and the 'Rat Man' can be analyzed through the lens of Claude Levi-Strauss's structuralism to reveal the irony and failure in the application of these myths.

Abstract

This article explores the matter of purity in Honore de Balzac’s flash fiction entitled Innocence. Purity refers to the idea that certain actions or behaviors are considered morally pure or impure based on societal norms and values. Innocence is a Honore de Balzac’s flash fiction that talks about innocence or a high curiosity spirit possessed by children. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, it is analyzed through this flash fiction that innocence is the main symbol of purity. Little Francis and Margot are two little pure spirits who live. They try new things. They notice a portrait of two figures, which is actually an image of Adam and Eve. However, because the children's minds have not matured enough and they have not been exposed to more knowledge, they do not recognize which one is Adam and which is Eve, because the figure does not wear clothes, therefore Little Francis and Margot are unsure which is Adam and which is Eve. The purity of the children is a direct mirror of innocence, which is the essence of Balzac's flash fiction. Children will only know some things because they are still pure. Purity is a natural aspect that all children have. In conclusion, adult people will laugh at them, but the children are still pure since they reflect their childhood matters.

Abstract

This paper explores the idea of hope of possibility in Keiichi Okabe’s song entitled Weight of the World or translated as Kowareta Sekai No Uta. In the game called NieR: Automata, the song is a cry of a girl who wants to save everyone from anything bad that happened to them. She wanted to redeem her past mistakes by praying the God to help her through dark times, even though the opportunity that she got is unknown. Then, how is the hope of possibility asserted in Keiichi Okabe’s Weight of the World? Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this writing explains the possibility of hope retaining the girl to achieve her dream through the unknown probability. Supported by the theory of Adrienne M. Martin, the concept extended the orthodox view of hope with the girl’s incorporation elements in this song. This is also interrelated with the human condition, highlighting how individual aspirations contribute to collective resilience and transformation. By understanding hope as a multifaceted concept, this paper underscores the complexity of human existence and the potential for renewal within shared struggles. In conclusion, the hope exists in her journey as any unknown possibility to save everyone is answered.

Abstract

This research analyzes the exposition of trauma in Gabriel Osorio's 2016 short film Bear Story. The film reflects his historical experience under Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile and tells the story of an old Bear who creates a mechanical diorama depicting the loss of his family due to the dictatorship's oppression. This research uses a narrative and symbol analysis approach to investigate how collective and individual trauma is manifested through visual, narrative and symbolic elements in the film. Trauma is implied in the protagonist's emotional journey as he faces bitter memories of exile, torture and separation. Cinematic techniques such as the use of a soft color palette, melancholic music, and diorama mechanics as a metaphor for the process of memory and healing emphasize the psychological impact of trauma. The results of this study show that Bear stories are not just a form of artistic expression, but also serve as a medium of healing and historical memory for the victims and the wider community. In conclusion, Bear Story emphasizes film as a communicative tool to think trauma, memory, and resistance to oppression in related sociopolitical contexts.
