Abstract

This research aimed to discover the relationship between students' vocabulary knowledge and their ability to comprehend text. The researchers in this study employed a quantitative approach. Students from SMPN 1 Liliriaja's ninth-grade class participated in this study. Purposive sampling was used to collect the data. The correlation between the two variables was determined by comparing the obtained data. Students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension were found to have a strong correlation. The possibility of the correlation value. (2-tailed) becoming 0.000, which is below the significance level, can be verified (0.05). As a result, the researchers can rule out the null hypothesis (H0) and accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Because the value is 0.698, it can be concluded that students' vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension have a significantly strong correlation (0,61-0,80).

Abstract

Students' knowledge and acquisition of a second language is seen to improve with hybrid learning. Using offline and online activities is anticipated to produce greater results than conventional face-to-face activities. This study aims to compare the levels of learning achievement between conventional and hybrid learning strategies used in an English grammar class. 40 year -7 students, divided into two classes of 20 each, participated in the study as respondents. Pre-experimental research methods were used in this study, and the participants' pre- and post-test mean scores were compared. Multiple-choice questions were present on both the pre-test and post-test. The results demonstrated an improvement in both the pre-test (46.5) and post-test (46.5) means (71.00). Also, data from the statistical analysis revealed that Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000, less than (0.05), indicating a significant mean difference in grammar learning achievement affected by hybrid media after being supplied to students compared to conventional learning. It is concluded that hybrid learning may raise student achievement, particularly in English grammar.

Abstract

This study aims to ascertain how users think about Hallo (https://www.hallo.ai), a free artificial intelligence (AI) application (app) that enables users to interact with AI teachers to learn languages. Hallo has become increasingly popular among EFL students worldwide as a platform for practicing English. In conducting this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method and collected the data using in-depth interviews with twenty Hallo users from Indonesia who were chosen using a purposive sampling technique. Findings from the data analysis showed that Hallo contributes to the users' increased ability and confidence in speaking English. With Hallo, users can communicate anonymously, get a lot of exposure to others, connect with people who share their goals and are on the same level as them, and come across supportive individuals. Users see English-speaking ability as influenced by two of the indicators of speaking skills: accuracy and fluency. This is because users engage in worldwide online EFL speaking practice with strangers or foreigners and are sensitive to cultural variations. Users impart accurate knowledge, pay less attention to grammar, develop pronunciation, and increase their vocabulary. Users are exposed to interlocutors frequently, their proficiency has an impact on users, users are under the influence of external forces, and users experience issues with their internet connections. In conclusion, users generally had positive perceptions of Hallo's contributions to their improved English-speaking proficiency and confidence. As a result, Hallo could be a fantastic tool for EFL learners to practice speaking.

This research used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design and a questionnaire. The study population was 40 grade 8 students at SMP IT Nurul Fikri Makassar, South Sulawesi, in the 2021–2022 academic year. The respondents were recruited using a random sampling technique. The research instruments were a vocabulary test administered as a post-test and a pre-test, and a questionnaire. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistics was used. The post-test mean score was 84.5455; which shows that the post-test mean score was more significant than the pre-test mean score (68.6364). Of the percentage of students’ perceptions while using Islamic videos on YouTube, 85% answered yes, and only 15% answered no. Furthermore, the value of this study (0.001) was lower than the alpha level (0.05). These mean that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. Consequently, Islamic videos on YouTube could be used as medium to improve the students' English vocabulary mastery in grade 8 of SMP IT Nurul Fikri Makassar.

Abstract

In the implementation of an Intensive Speaking Instructional Approach (ISIA) to speaking skills development, instructions and activities occur mostly in the classroom. They are initiated mostly by the instructor (lecturer/teacher) and designed for students. The instructor plans and selects materials, guides and manages activities and exercises in the classroom, gives feedback, and assesses students’ accomplishments. On the contrary, in an Extensive Speaking Instructional Approach (ESIA), speaking skills development occurs mostly outside the classroom involving the instructor, the students, and various other people. It is based on topics selected, developed, discussed, responded to, and even assessed by the students themselves. This paper reports on research study that investigates the use of ISIA and ESIA to develop an instructional model for the Intermediate Speaking course designed for student teachers of English attending the third semester of their degree course. It presents one of the most important findings of the study, which is the instructional model. The model includes a syllabus consisting of the Intermediate Speaking instructional units, objectives of each of the instructional units, formative and summative assessment, instructional procedures or strategies, and the course materials
