Abstract

In the world of education, of course, we are no strangers to the problem-based learning method, where learning should be student-centered, which was initially oriented to a problem related to the topic of learning. The author intends to implement the PBL method in the news item text learning process at MAN Lamandau, particularly in class XII. This study seeks to understand its application, the students' comprehension of the material, and their involvement in the news item text learning process. The author used data from his field experience practice at MAN Lamandau, specifically in class XII, for the discussion. The author carried out the learning process himself using the PBL method with the text topics mentioned above. Later, the author will use a qualitative method in the form of a narrative to convey the results. Despite several challenges in the implementation process, including the absence of an interactive discussion process due to students' passive tendencies and external factors that disrupt the learning process, the PBL method's application generally piques students' interest and motivation in the news item text learning process, as they typically receive only lectures.

Abstract

This research contributes to language development, especially adjectival retention as a very basic resilience in the text. Research on adjectives has been conducted by (Kennedy, 2013), (Schiff et al., 2014), (Sharma et al., 2015), (Sato et al., 2016), (Cutillas & Tolchinsky, 2017) Compared to the previous studies, however, the present study focuses on adjectival retention. In addition, the research findings also provide an understanding of the use of adjectives with the meaningfulness contained in the sentence. This research is a qualitative one, using a content analysis method. The data consist of persuasive essays written by 83 students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program in the Faculty of Languages and Literature at State University of Makassar, submitted during March to September 2019 period. While the research data were in the form of adjectives in the essays submitted, the research instrument was the researchers themselves. Data collection was done by giving assignments to the students to write persuasive essays. Data analysis techniques were identifying, reducing, presenting the data, verifying, and drawing conclusions about adjectival retention. The findings of the study indicate the following cases of adjectival retention: (a) weakening of positive adjectival retention; (b) intensive retention occurring not only with the precursor which precedes it, but also with the constituent following it; (c) elative retention appearing only after the use of verbs in the sentence; (d) excessive adjectival retention having a formation that occurs due to a conjunction stating the cause; (e) retention of argumentative adjectives placing emphasis on the part of the core sentence; (f) retention of attenuate adjectives reinforcing one another and not weakening the other parts. Overall, some 42% of the essays contain adjectival retention and 58% of them were without adjectival retention.

Abstract

This research aims to find out what factors affect students' understanding of daily English vocabulary, how they acquire vocabulary, the difficulties and convenience in understanding vocabulary, how to deal with problems if they find new vocabulary, and how they solve problems related to English vocabulary. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection in this research was conducted by interviewing 7 students at the State University of Makassar as the participants in this research. The results of this research found that there are several pluses such as Google Translate and E-dictionary are the platforms most often used in understanding daily English vocabulary, finding similarities is an effective way according to students when looking for the meaning of new vocabulary. As for the drawbacks, the drawbacks of this research are when students find words that are almost the same but have different meanings. It can be concluded that external factors (because they are English students) are factors that affect students' understanding of daily English vocabulary.
