Abstract

The purpose of this study is to answer the following research questions: How do teachers implement feedback sessions and what are teachers' perceptions of feedback sessions in English language teaching. This study uses the qualitative-descriptive approach. The participants of this research are three English teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Barru. The research instrument in this study was the interview protocol. The results of this study indicate that each teacher has a different perception of the feedback session and how they implemented it. Based on the classroom observation, every teacher implemented the correct feedback, that are the feedback must be corrective, the feedback must be given in timely manner, the feedback must be specific and refer to certain criteria, and the feedback is given to students as a tool to develop qualities in themselves. Meanwhile, the results of the interviews showed that every teacher has a positive perception of the feedback sessions in English language teaching. Abstract

The goal of this study is to determine whether there is the students’ perception of the YouTube application improves their speaking skills in the second-semester academic year 2021-2022 of the English Education Study Program at the Faculty of Language and Literature State University of Makassar. Mixed quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were used. In order to fulfill the study's objectives, the information was gathered through an interview and a Likert questionnaire. The sample of the questionnaire is 30 students and Interviews of 10 students. The results of data analysis show that (1) positive student perceptions of the use of YouTube application in learning speaking skill with the classification, 12 (40%) students classified Strongly positive, (2) According to student explanations provided in interviews about their perspectives of using YouTube, it is a useful and entertaining online learning tool with good characteristics that greatly promote acquiring speaking skills in this age of pandemics. YouTube allows pupils to improve speaking skills despite the pandemic because it still allows for learning many speaking skill with lot of video content education and many native speakers. Keywords— Students Perception, YouTube, Speaking Skill

Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe the teachers’ concept of good teaching methods, kinds of teaching methods used by professional EFL teachers, and the reasons of the professional EFL teachers used the methods. The data sources for the research are three professional EFL teachers from three high school level in Makassar. This research employed qualitative approach with a grounded theory method for the research. The researchers act as the main instrument, using field notes, audio and video recorders. In the data collection, the researchers conducted interview and direct classroom observation. In analyzing the data, the researchers employed coding method that comprised three steps, open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The result of the research shows that the three subjects have different statements about teaching methods, but their concept is basically in line with the theories about teaching method proposed by the experts. They stated that the teaching method is a set of principles, procedures or strategies to be implemented by teachers to achieve desired learning in students. During their teaching the teachers used PPP (presentation, practice and production) method, communicative approach, discussion method, task-based learning, audio lingual method, and ESA (engage, study, and activate) method. The three research subjects suggest similar points considered by teachers in choosing a teaching method to be applied in the classroom. To choose a method the most important things to consider are the material and the students learning style

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of Choral and Repeated Reading Strategy (CRRS) in improving the reading ability of year 7 students at UPT SMPN 1 Cempa Pinrang. The cluster random sampling technique was used to select the sample of 28 students for this study. A reading test was an instrument in this study. After treatment, the results of this test were used to assess the Choral and Repeated Reading Strategy (CRRS) to improve the reading ability of year 7 students at UPT SMPN 1 Cempa Pinrang. It can be demonstrated that the t-test value was less than P (0.000 0.05), implying that the hypothesis (H0) of this study was rejected

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of class 2020 of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Negeri Makassar about the use of translanguaging in the English teaching-learning process. The researcher used a mixed-method research design (quantitative-qualitative), using a questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The sample questionnaire is 165 participants taken by voluntary sampling technique and five participants for the interview taken by purposive sampling technique. The data analysis from the questionnaire revealed that the student had positive perceptions about the lecturer's use of translanguaging, as evidenced by a mean score of 36.41 and classified as positive because it helped them to have a better understanding and participated better and more efficiently in the lesson, and the student has moderate perceptions about their own translanguaging practices, as evidenced by a mean score of 17.27 and classified as moderate. The questionnaire result indicated that students have moderate to positive attitudes overall. The result of the interview showed that five students responded positively to the practice of translanguaging. Based on the interview result, the student perceived that when translanguaging occurred in the classroom, the English teaching-learning process was efficient because most students understood the material given better, participated actively, and were motivated to improve their English skills.

Abstract

The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method with a sample of 6 student teachers divided into teams. Each team has two students in the class. Class 10 MIPA 6 consisted of 29 students, and Class 10 IKA consisted of 32 students. The researchers analyzed five videos of teaching and learning sessions. The researchers observed and recorded the teaching and learning activities at MAN 2 Makassar through the Ajarmi program. While the student teachers Ajarmi teach, they record their lessons on video. After observation, the researchers watched the video and then transcribed the video. Then, the researchers analyzed and then classified in the form of communication both verbal and nonverbal communication. The researchers found four types of verbal communication used by student teachers in the classroom, there are intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, public communication and small group communication. Meanwhile, there are three types of verbal communication used by student teachers in the classroom, there are kinesics, proxemics and facial expression. So, it can be concluded that the most frequently used by student teachers is public communication the types of verbal communication because student teachers always involve all students in the learning process so that they know the increase in students’ knowledge in EFL class.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the use of English pop song improve the listening skill of the second year students at SMA Negeri 3 Jeneponto. The independent variable in this study was the use of English pop songs while the dependent variable is listening skill. The population in this research was the students of class XI at SMA Negeri 3 Jeneponto, while the sample was students of class XI MIA 1 consist of 19 students. The research data was obtained by giving a listening test in the form of pretest and post test. The data analysis technique was descriptive statistics and t-test. Based on the results of the analysis, the probability value = 0.001 was lower than the level of significance value = 0.05. It can be concluded that the use of English pop songs can improve the listening skills of the students class XI MIA 1 at SMA Negeri 3 Jeneponto.Keywords— Improving, Pop Song, Listening Skill.

Abstract

This research aimed to provide descriptive accounts of the use of paragraph cohesion in the textbook in learning materials for an essay writing class at UNM Makassar. This research employed a qualitative approach with descriptive data exposure. Qualitative research is research that aims to describe research results. This research analyzes and reveals various qualitative information with a detailed description through cohesion in this textbook. The research design used is descriptive-analytical. This design is a research design that describes the research objectively. Researchers observe in-depth and conduct an in-depth analysis of the object of research. In the application of this research design, the first thing the researcher did was to collect data and references relevant to the object of research, sort and categorize the data found, process the data, and then present the data objectively following the results of interruptions to the object of research conducted. The findings showed. The data analysis presentation consists of (1) cohesion, which includes grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction), and lexical cohesion, which includes repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, and collocation. In this textbook, cohesion has an influential role in the learning activity. It is suggested that it is significant to In the preparation of textbooks, it is recommended to study the presentation of the learning material to make it easier for students to understand. To facilitate students' understanding of the material, each paragraph of the learning material in the textbooks of the essay writing course at UNM should pay more attention to cohesion. Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the number of contextual meanings of preposition ‘by’ found an English textbook, (2) to find out the most dominant contextual meanings of preposition ‘by’ found in an English textbook. This research employed qualitative with descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was the English textbook entitle Introducing Translation Studies by Jeremy Munday. The instrument in collecting data were the documentation of the list of contextual meaning of preposition ‘by’ found in an English textbook. Based on the research finding and discussion, there were at least 16 contextual meanings of the preposition 'by' which must be used in context. From the data it can be seen that the most frequently used constant meaning is the meaning of ‘by’ which there are at least 48 sentences in the book that use the preposition 'by' in it. Keywords: Contextual meaning, preposition ‘by’, Translation Studies

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the benefits and challenges of using video as a teaching medium: teachers’ perception. Besides, this research also attempts to identify the benefits and challenges of using video as a teaching medium. Learning media is currently needed by teachers to support the teaching and learning system in the classroom. One of the media applied is video. This study aims to determine the benefits and challenges of using videos in the teaching and learning process based on teacher perceptions. In conducting this research, researchers used qualitative methods to find out and explore more detailed information. The qualitative approach method used by the researcher was descriptive qualitative. Two English teachers were selected as participants in this study. All participants were English teachers in one of the high schools in MTs Al-Hidayah consisting of two female teachers. The researcher used interviews as the data collection instrument. There were eight findings, four advantages, and four challenges. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that teachers' perceptions of the use of video-based learning media are very positive. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of video-based learning media can increase teacher creativity, increase student attention, increase student motivation, and Increase learning effectiveness.Keywords—Teaching video, benefits and challenges
