Abstract

The emergence of Industry 5.0, which integrates advanced technology with a human-centered approach, has significantly reshaped organizational dynamics. This transformation underscores the critical role of human resources in sustaining organizational competitiveness. Employee performance is not solely determined by output quantity but also by output quality. Employees must operate effectively and efficiently to optimize organizational performance. This study examines the impact of work ethic, motivation, and job satisfaction on employee performance. The research population comprises all employees at Indonesia Open University (IOU), with the sample drawn from IOU’s central office and the Bandung and Yogyakarta regional offices, yielding 179 valid responses. A quantitative approach utilizing Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was employed for data analysis. The findings indicate that work ethic has a significant positive effect on employee performance—employees with a stronger work ethic exhibit higher performance levels. Conversely, motivation and job satisfaction do not exhibit a statistically significant effect on employee performance. Collectively, work ethic, motivation, and job satisfaction explain 56.4% of employee performance variance, while the remaining 43.6% is influenced by other external factors beyond the study’s scope.

Abstract

Amid growing market demands for sustainability, several green micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia have begun to construct ecological identities through digital media as a strategy for value differentiation. However, these representational practices go beyond mere commercial promotion. They reflect a complex interplay between local values, global consumer expectations, and the algorithmic logic embedded within digital platforms. This study investigates how green MSME actors construct, negotiate, and perform social representations of sustainability in digital spaces. Employing an interpretive qualitative approach, the study adopts a multi-sited case study design. It uses visual-narrative analysis to examine digital campaign content from MSMEs engaged in plastic recycling, ecoprint textile production, and natural honey harvesting. Data were collected through online observation, digital document analysis, and limited narrative interviews, and analyzed through the theoretical lenses of social representation, ecological identity, performativity, and platform economy. The findings reveal three dominant patterns: (1) the symbolization of ergo-iconic value, combining tangible ecological practices with aesthetic visualizations as symbolic capital; (2) performative and algorithm-driven sustainability, where content is crafted to attract visibility within a competitive platform ecosystem; and (3) representational resistance, where certain MSMEs choose to highlight complex ecological processes that may not be “Instagrammable” but are instead educational and contextually grounded. The study concludes that the ecological identities of green MSMEs in Indonesia are shaped through representational labor that is symbolic, relational, and conditioned by structural asymmetries within the digital economy. These findings contribute to the fields of environmental communication, digital moral economies, and sustainability strategies in the context of the Global South.

Abstract

The increasing deployment of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) to various destination countries, especially in Asia and Africa, has generated substantial income inflows for families back home. However, low financial literacy, limited access to formal financial services, and a tendency toward short-term consumption often undermine this economic potential. This study investigates financial literacy and inclusion's influence on investment interest among Indonesian migrant workers. Utilizing a quantitative approach with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), data were collected from 200 respondents through an OECD-adapted questionnaire covering financial knowledge, behavior, attitudes, and service accessibility. The findings indicate that financial literacy significantly affects investment interest (? = 0.386; p = 0.013), suggesting that enhanced financial competence increases the propensity to invest. Similarly, financial inclusion also exerts a significant positive influence (? = 0.351; p = 0.030), revealing that improved access to financial products and services, such as savings, insurance, and digital investment platforms, encourages migrant workers to engage in productive financial activities. These results highlight the importance of targeted financial education programs and inclusive financial infrastructures to strengthen the long-term economic resilience of returning migrant workers and their families. Future research should explore additional moderating variables such as digital platform adoption, migration duration, and sociocultural dynamics to enrich the understanding of investment behavior within this demographic.

Abstract

The increasing adoption of gamified systems in workplace settings has garnered significant attention, particularly in multinational enterprises (MNEs) seeking innovative approaches to enhance team member engagement and productivity. Background Gamified attendance systems, integrating game elements such as points, leaderboards, and rewards, present a novel strategy for improving attendance and punctuality across diverse cultural contexts. However, implementing such systems in cross-cultural settings poses unique challenges and opportunities. Objective: This study explores the factors influencing the adoption of gamified attendance systems in MNEs, focusing on cross-cultural adaptability and its implications for organisational performance. Research Method A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews with HR managers and employees from diverse cultural backgrounds with a quantitative survey targeting 350 employees across 10 MNEs. Data were analysed using thematic analysis and structural equation modelling to identify cultural and organisational determinants of success. Results The findings reveal that cultural dimensions, such as power distance and individualism, significantly impact team member perceptions and engagement with gamified systems. While gamification enhanced attendance rates and morale in low-power-distance cultures, it faced resistance in high-power-distance environments. Additionally, alignment with organisational goals and transparent communication were critical for successful implementation. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity and strategic planning in the cross-cultural adoption of gamified attendance systems. By addressing these factors, MNEs can leverage gamification to foster a more engaged and productive workforce, enhancing global operational efficiency. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts and sector-specific adaptations to optimise implementation outcomes.

Abstract

Conversational commerce (c-commerce) leveraging messaging platforms like WhatsApp presents new opportunities for local neighbourhood engagement in service-oriented markets. Aim: This study investigates how WhatsApp-based conversational agents influence consumer buying behaviour within a local workplace context, introducing the concept of Conversational Commerce of Neighbourhood. Methods: Employing a user-centred design approach, we collected quantitative data from 110 active employees at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Terbuka, via surveys and observations of a WhatsApp prototype, and conducted qualitative interviews to triangulate findings. Results: Quantitative results show that 73% of respondents reported higher satisfaction with WhatsApp-based local communications, and 65% indicated a higher likelihood of purchasing after personalised interactions; however, 25% expressed concerns about data privacy. Regression analysis indicates significant positive effects of WhatsApp usage on customer satisfaction (p < 0.001), with interaction frequency (p < 0.01) and tailored user satisfaction having substantial influence (coefficient for user satisfaction = 0.85). Qualitative insights highlight the value of personal touch, faster responses, and stronger branding perception in fostering loyalty. Conclusions: When designed with local cultural contexts and transparent data practices, neighbourhood-focused c-commerce via WhatsApp can enhance consumer engagement and purchasing outcomes, offering practical guidance for local businesses and contributing to the theoretical understanding of e-commerce and human–computer interaction in local settings.
