Abstract

This two-cycle classroom action research aimed to improve SMPN 1 Salawu students’ learning discipline through reinforcement techniques.   Each cycle consisted of two meetings with three subjects, totaling six meetings in each cycle. Participants were six 7th-grade students recruited using a purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through observation and analyzed using descriptive analysis. The result showed an increase in learning discipline after researchers and teachers improved the reinforcement technique in the second cycle. In Cycle I, students’ dressing discipline mean score was 64%, implying a 50.5% increase from the baseline score of 12.5%. The mean score of discipline in submitting assignments was 41.7%, increasing from the baseline score of 10%.   At the end of cycle I, although the action research had met the process criteria (i.e., obtaining at least a 10% increase), it had not met the outcome criteria (i.e., mean score of 65%). In Cycle II, participants’ dressing discipline score was 94%, suggesting a 30% increase from Cycle I. Meanwhile, the discipline in submitting assignment was 81%, suggesting a 39.3% increase from cycle I.   The result of Cycle II met the process and outcome criteria, meaning that Students’ learning discipline in SMPN 1 Salawu was improved through the reinforcement technique. This result could be used as a reference for school counselors in using reinforcement techniques to improve students’ discipline.

Abstract

Public schools are not always believed to be able to support the development of an individual's potential comprehensively. Homeschooling, an educational program where students learn from home, is currently an alternative education. This study aims to reveal why parents choose to homeschool their children and describe how a homeschooler parent as a single tutor develops her child’s numeracy literacy skills in living book homeschooling. This research is a holistic single-case study with two subjects: a homeschooler (J) and his mother (UPL) as the tutor. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and document analysis of J’s learning activities. Thematic analysis with Atlas.ti software was employed. Findings reveal that the parents’ main reasons for homeschooling are dissatisfaction with public school instruction and flexibility to comprehensively develop homeschoolers’ skills. In addition, the integration of RME (Realistic Mathematics Education) in the living book homeschooling model is a very powerful support to students’ literacy numeracy development. Practically, there are three main strategies implemented; the use of real contexts and concrete teaching aids, as well as an emphasis on conceptual understanding and high-order thinking skills.

Mathematical representation ability is very important to have and develop. This study aims to analyze students' mathematical representation abilities, as well as the forms of mathematical representations that appear. This study used case studies of four Grade VII junior high school students with moderate abilities, which were carried out in Recognizing Algebraic Shapes. The research was carried out in the odd semester of the 2022/2023 academic year in three meetings. The data collection techniques used are questionnaires, interviews, and problem solving analysis sheets. The results showed that class VII students were students at the early abstraction stage, so their mathematical representation abilities had not emerged and developed well. The form of representation that appears is symbolic representation with a low type where there is still a gap between concrete thinking and initial abstraction abilities. Some of the things that influence the emergence of representational abilities are high motivation in solving problems, the learning methods presented, and students' abilities in learning mathematics.

Abstract

The meaning in life is a fundamental human behavior that plays an essential role in self-development. The concept of meaning in life continues to focus on researchers using various theoretical perspectives. This study explored the construct of meaning in life from the vantage point of undergraduate students in their final year. They were chosen by considering the severity of the developmental tasks that must be completed during this time. By using the mixed-method approach, the study found the concept of meaning in life through the qualitative method. Some themes were related to the meaning of life, namely: experiencing a number of important events, being devoted to religion, learning from life, feeling positive emotions, benefiting others, interacting socially, and caring for oneself. The study was followed by a quantitative method through exploratory factor analysis and found that the construct of the meaning in life consisted of three factors, namely: facing difficult and severe situations, getting lessons from unpleasant situations, and thinking flexibly when dealing with various situations. This measurement model could be used in the development of meaning in life theory. Practically, it becomes the reference in solving the life problems.
