Abstract

The development of students’ critical thinking skills is a major priority in 21st-century education. This study examined the effectiveness of the Flipped Learning Model (FLM) in enhancing critical thinking skills among elementary school students. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design, the research involved 120 students from four elementary schools. The FLM intervention integrated pre-class digital video materials and collaborative in-class learning activities, while conventional instruction relied on direct teaching methods. Students’ critical thinking skills were assessed using a validated test based on Facione’s framework, which includes the indicators of Interpretation, Analysis, Evaluation, Inference, Explanation, and Self-regulation. The results revealed a significant increase in students’ post-test scores compared to their pre-test scores (p < 0.05), indicating that FLM contributed to higher levels of critical thinking. The positive impact is attributed to the shift from teacher-centered to student-centered learning, allowing students to understand basic concepts independently before class and practice higher-order thinking during classroom activities. These findings provide important implications for teachers, curriculum developers, and policymakers in designing learning strategies that promote critical thinking and support Education for Sustainable Development. Future research is recommended to examine the long-term effects of FLM across broader cognitive outcomes and diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between stress management skills and students’ resilience in facing collaborative project-based assessment. The participants were 117 junior high school students from two private schools in Bandung who were involved in collaborative project-based assessments. This study employed a quantitative correlational research design. Data were collected using questionnaires measuring students’ stress management skills and resilience, which were validated through expert judgment and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation test. The results show that most students demonstrate high levels of stress management and resilience, indicating the use of adaptive coping strategies and strong learning perseverance. However, the correlation between stress management and resilience was very weak and not statistically significant. These findings indicate that students’ academic resilience may be influenced more by external factors such as social support, learning environment, and academic context rather than individual stress management skills. This study highlights the importance of supportive learning environments in strengthening students’ resilience when facing collaborative project-based assessments.

Abstract

Hope is important in mediating the relationship between optimism and grit in adolescents. Optimism, believing in positive future outcomes, can promote constructive attitudes. However, hope helps to direct such optimism into concrete actions in the form of grit in achieving goals. This study examined the effect of optimism on grit, with hope as a mediating among adolescents in Islamic boarding schools. This study used a quantitative, ex-post facto approach involving 367 adolescents selected through multistage random sampling. Data were collected using the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), Optimism Scale, and Adult Dispositional Hope Scale. Data was analyzed using multiple regression with Process v4.2 macro of Hayes Model 4 through SPSS. The findings showed a significant positive influence between optimism and grit through hope, with complete mediation. Therefore, it is crucial for boarding schools to foster optimism and set realistic goals, as this can improve students' fortitude and academic achievement. The practical implications of these findings are that teachers and Islamic boarding school administrators can teach and promote an optimistic attitude and realistic and positive goal setting, reward small achievements, and goal visualization exercises can help increase adolescent hope and grit.
