Abstract

This systematic literature review synthesizes research on oral corrective feedback (OCF) and its effects on students' speaking performance within the Indonesian context. Following the PRISMA guidelines, 19 studies published between 2014-2024 were analyzed. The findings reveal diverse OCF practices employed by teachers, with explicit correction and recasts being the most commonly used types. However, a key challenge lies in the mismatch between the OCF strategies preferred by students, such as explicit correction and metalinguistic clues, and those predominantly used by teachers. OCF was found to evoke both positive emotions like motivation and perceived importance, as well as negative emotions including embarrassment, lowered confidence, and nervousness about making mistakes. The studies underscore the need for teachers to consider factors such as error types, timing of correction, students' proficiency levels, and potential emotional impacts when providing OCF. Tailoring OCF practices to individual student needs and preferences emerges as crucial for optimizing effectiveness and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the education sector is becoming increasingly unavoidable; however, the ability of AI systems, such as ChatGPT, to generate critically argumentative texts remains insufficiently examined. This study explored whether argumentative essays authored by humans exhibit greater critical depth than those generated by ChatGPT. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. Ten Indonesian university students voluntarily composed two argumentative essays—on the topics of “city dumps” and “slum neighborhoods”—following an experiential learning model, resulting in 20 human-produced texts. ChatGPT was tasked with generating 20 essays on the same topics. The data were analyzed using the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric (HCTSR) developed by Facione (2020), as follows: three blind raters assessed all 40 essays for critical thinking using standardized rubrics. Quantitative analysis (t-tests) and qualitative content inspection revealed that human essays consistently achieved higher scores for experiential breadth, perspective diversity, counterargument integration, and emotional resonance. These findings indicate that despite advancements in natural language generation, AI-produced argumentative writing still lacks the critical sophistication that human authors demonstrate. This study indicates that future AI development must move beyond surface-level fluency to better emulate the nuanced socio-contextual sophistication of human reasoning.

Abstract

This study explored university students' levels of autonomy and identified the challenges they face in becoming more autonomous learners within a university context. The research involved 80 students from a public university in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed, comprising two phases: a survey phase and an interview phase. The data were collected using closed-ended questionnaires to assess students’ levels of autonomy and semi-structured interviews to examine the challenges hindering students’ autonomy. Next, the quantitative data from the questionnaire were analyzed using simple statistical techniques, including percentages and mean scores, while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed two key results. First, students showed high levels of autonomy across all dimensions—technical, psychological, political, and socio-cultural. Notably, none of the questionnaire items indicated a low level of autonomy. Students attributed their high autonomy to the flexibility of working independently at home and leveraging internet resources to complete their projects. They also displayed strong sociability, adaptability, and collaboration skills in achieving their goals. Second, the primary challenges faced by students to be more autonomous in online meetings involved: lecturers’ compulsory instructions, low motivation, lack of discipline, poor time management, dependence on lecturers, lack of skills, and limited interaction.

Abstract

In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) higher education, writing ability requires effective assessment. This study investigates the effect of Assessment as Learning (AaL) on students' argumentative writing performance. While AaL has been recognized for improving writing, limited research has explored its effects in relation to students' writing engagement (WE). This study examines (a) whether students taught through AaL perform better in writing than those given teacher feedback, (b) whether different WE level lead to different performance outcomes, and (c) whether there is an interaction between assessment type and WE level. Using a quasi-experimental 2x2 factorial design, the study involved two fourth-semester classes at an Islamic university in Kediri, Indonesia. One class (15 students) received AaL, while the other (13 students) received teacher feedback over 12 sessions. The AaL group followed Lee’s (2016) framework, incorporating personal goals, writing criteria, descriptive feedback, self- and peer assessment, and learning logs. Writing performance was measured through pre- and post-tests assessed by two raters, and WE levels were determined using a 27-item Writing Engagement Scale. Results from a two-way ANOVA showed a significant effect of AaL on students' writing performance. However, WE level and their interaction with the assessment method did not significantly affect outcomes. The findings suggest that AaL, particularly when adapted through Lee’s principles, enhances writing performance regardless of WE level. While engagement may not be the primary determinant of the success of AaL, EFL instruction could utilize AaL to enhance students writing outcomes and engagement in the classroom.
