Abstract

General Background: The teaching of Nahwu in Islamic boarding schools is often hindered by monotonous, teacher-centered methods that limit students’ comprehension and engagement. Specific Background: At Daarul Abror Modern Islamic Boarding School, Grade II-C students displayed low achievement in Nahwu due to limited interactive and contextualized learning. Knowledge Gap: While the Jigsaw cooperative learning model has been shown to improve language skills in other contexts, its application in teaching Nahwu with the Nahwu Wāḍiḥ text in modern pesantren remains underexplored. Aims: This study investigates the effectiveness of the Jigsaw method in enhancing students’ comprehension of Nahwu and fostering active participation. Results: Using a qualitative case study with observations, interviews, and pre–post tests, findings reveal improved mastery of grammatical structures, higher test scores (from 62.60% to 68.90%), and increased student motivation and collaboration. Novelty: Unlike prior studies limited to Arabic or English descriptive texts, this research applies the Jigsaw strategy specifically to Nahwu instruction within a modern pesantren framework. Implications: The study highlights the potential of cooperative learning to strengthen both cognitive and social aspects of students’ learning, offering teachers a practical model to promote deeper comprehension, accountability, and engagement in grammar instruction. Highlights: Jigsaw method improved students’ comprehension and motivation in Nahwu. Pre–post tests showed higher achievement after implementation. Abstract

Arabic language instruction in secondary Islamic education has traditionally relied on text-based explanation and memorization, which often fails to address learners’ cognitive diversity and engagement in digital learning environments. This study aims to develop and evaluate a multimodal instructional design model integrating infographics and interactive videos to enhance Arabic language learning, particularly vocabulary and grammar mastery. Grounded in Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and structured through the ADDIE framework, the study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach. Data was collected through pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews involving 60 Madrasah ‘Aliyah students divided into experimental and control groups. The multimodal materials were developed using Canva, Powtoon, and H5P and implemented over six weeks. Quantitative results showed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group’s vocabulary and grammar achievement (p < .05), while qualitative findings indicated increased motivation, engagement, and conceptual understanding. The novelty of this study lies in its empirically validated multimodal instructional design model that systematically integrates visual and interactive elements within Arabic language pedagogy. The findings suggest that sustained teacher training in digital pedagogy is essential to support the effective implementation and scalability of multimodal learning in Arabic education.

Abstract

This research developed the use of the “Al-Misbah” digital dictionary of Arabic idioms, grounded in corpus linguistics, as a communicative learning medium for students in the Arabic Language Study Program. The background is a low level of idiomatic understanding and limited systematic and contextual learning materials. The development followed the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. Idiom data were analyzed using Sketch Engine, designs were created in Figma, and applications were developed in Flutter. The validation of material and media experts showed very high feasibility (99.13% and 98%), while the student practicality questionnaire reached 85.94%. The app is interactive, user-friendly, data-driven, contextual, and flexible for advanced development. Al-Misbah offers innovative solutions for the study of Arabic idioms in an independent, communicative, and contextual manner, thereby facilitating their understanding and application across diverse contexts.
