Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of peer tutoring learning in enhancing students’ speaking accuracy. The main purpose was to determine whether peer tutoring learning significantly improves students’ speaking accuracy. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design was applied to examine the influence of peer tutoring on students’ speaking accuracy. The population comprised all second-grade students of SMPN 2 Sungguminasa, totaling 120 learners, from which 42 students were chosen as the sample. A speaking test was utilized as the research instrument. The findings indicated that peer tutoring learning was highly effective in improving students’ speaking accuracy, as demonstrated by the T-test result with a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The results also showed a substantial improvement in students’ scores from the pre-test to the post-test, especially in the aspects of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. It can be concluded that peer tutoring learning is effective in improving students’ speaking accuracy. Keywords:  peer tutoring, speaking, accuracy

Abstract

This research aims to analyze and compare students’ perceptions of using Google Lens and traditional dictionaries in English vocabulary learning. This research uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive comparative design. The participants were 39 students of Universitas Negeri Makassar selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used was a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and learning engagement. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparative analysis with SPSS. The findings reveal a statistically significant difference between students’ perceptions of Google Lens and traditional printed dictionaries, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Students demonstrated more positive perceptions toward Google Lens in terms of practicality, efficiency, and engagement. Therefore, it can be concluded that Google Lens is perceived as a more effective and acceptable medium for vocabulary learning in the digital era.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to identify the vocabulary teaching strategies used by English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Wasuponda. This study is a qualitative descriptive research design with data collection techniques in the form of classroom observations. The participants of this study were three English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Wasuponda. The results of the observations showed that teachers applied various vocabulary teaching strategies categorized into four groups: de-contextualizing strategies (word lists, flashcards, and dictionary use), semi-contextualizing strategies (word grouping, association, visual imagery, aural imagery, keyword, physical response, physical sensation, and semantic mapping), fully-contextualizing strategies (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), and adaptable strategies (structured reviewing). However, the findings also indicate that not all teachers implemented all of these strategies. Some strategies were applied only by certain teachers depending on their teaching preferences, classroom situations, and students’ learning needs. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Wasuponda employ a variety of vocabulary teaching strategies to support students’ vocabulary development, although the implementation of these strategies varies among teachers.

Abstract

The study investigated whether the Pronunciation with Emma YouTube channel could have positive effects on junior secondary students’ pronunciation of English diphthongs. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. The participants were 9th grade students of Class IX.K at SMP Negeri 3 Sungguminasa. The data were obtained from a pronunciation reading test made up of 40 words using eight diphthongs in English. The pre-test was prepared and used to assess students’ pronunciation achievement (AO1) at first, then a post-test was conducted after 4 treatment sessions using selected videos from Pronunciation with Emma channel. Quantitative data were also interpreted with descriptive statistics by the paired-sample t-test. It is established that students’ mean score increased as from 50.33 in the pretest to 73.93 in the post-test. The paired-sample t-test result was significant, p < .001, which suggests this improvement was significant in the outcomes following the intervention. Improvements were also observed for all eight diphthong sounds. Since pronunciation with Emma can give a useful audio-visual model, articulation support, and repetition effect to EFL learners as additional media in practice, it is a pedagogical view to aiding students in their development of English diphthong pronunciation performance.
